PW Kindle Paperwhite (1st gen) (JB) with unresponsive screen!

My device is a first generation KPW, firmware 5.3.9. Jailbroken, with
  • KUAL
  • fonts hack
  • collections manager
  • screensaver hack
  • ALT_FONTS workaround
  • USBnetworking / ssh/telnet through usb
  • KOreader (I'm not completely sure about the name, but it was an external reader)
  • backlight=0 (aka completely turn off backlight) "hack"

My kindle has had no problems EVER in the five years I've owned it. It stalled at the reboot screen one time two years ago when I copied a ~700Mb .mobi comic to it, but it got through that in three days and started working again. My kindle has no physical defects whatsoever, except a scratched back (I regret not buying a cover). I can count the number of times it has been dropped on my hands.

The last time I reset my kindle was more than a year ago. The last time I connected it to the internet was for a minute or so maybe two months ago to sync time after a reboot. All the modifications listed above were installed more than a year ago and nothing new has been installed or modified since. I only transfer books (azw3) to my device through calibre. I also try out new fonts sometimes (I've disabled the chinese/japanese fonts with the fonts hack and autohint freetype=on). I had ~10 custom screensavers. About 220 books with maybe 100MB free, which I usually preserve so it doesn't overload or slow down. ~80% charged, and my battery still lasts more than a month. I also use a passcode. Also I haven't added any books for about two weeks and everything was indexed. I also never install more than six custom fonts at a time. I'm not a newbie so esoteric/"difficult"/"out there" solutions are welcome to save my device.

I loaded a new font three days ago and then KUAL>font hack>reload firmware (standard procedure for new fonts which I've repeated a million times without any problems). It rebooted (It shows two messages while rebooting : "Freetype to autohint freetype" and "randomizing screensavers") and I punched in the passcode. Opened a book and tried out the new font. It was okay, but the device was very sluggish so I did a power button reboot. Even slower now, and it was lagging on the passcode screen. Rebooted automatically two minutes after loading the book list. This time around, I deleted a few books because I suspected low free memory because of all the highlighhting I'd been doing recently, which increases the size of the "My Clippings.txt" file (mine was around 6000 loc). After doing that, I performed another power button reboot, but this time the touch screen wasn't responsive. It has been stuck on the passcode screen ever since.

I've charged it completely, tried extra-long pressing everything, rebooting it while connecting it to my pc to connect (no luck).

'lsusb' can see the kindle, but 'lsblk' doesn't. Unless I get through the passcode, I can't access the internal memory of my device. The screen illuminates perfectly. Backlight turns off when connected to a computer, and turns back on again after disconnecting. No "kindle is connected to computer" screen, but that is expected because it's still locked. I thought there would be a delay between a mount and locking the internal memory of the device (during which I could make a factory reset file) but no luck.

Right now my kindle has been charging uninterrupted for more than a day and the touch screen is still unresponsive. Other than waiting for it to wake up/wipe itself, is there any other way to save the device?

Can it be opened? Can its internal memory be accessed externally? Warranty expired a long time ago and I'll duct tape it and use it, I don't care. I just want to save it.

EDIT:
Is this in the correct subforum? Should I delete this and repost it to the dev subforum?

Looking for convert bin with svg support

Hello,

I'm trying to convert a svg file to png withing the kindle 3, but to do that I need a version of convert witch has been compiled with support for svg files.
Currently I'm using the bin which comes with linkss package which I found on this forum.

Can anybody help me?

I also tried to find a module that allows me to do the same in python but no luck.
I tried with cairosvg and wand but both modules need libs that are not in the kindle (wand) or are not meant to run on python 2.7 (cairosvg).

PW3 Disable touch events to hold the ebook touching the screen

Hello!

I am having a hard time using my Kindle Paperwhite because the frames around the screen are not wide enough to hold with one hand. The best case scenario for me would be that I could hold the ebook touching the screen. Unfortunately, that is not possible right now as it would mean triggering any touch event (e.g. going to the next page).

That's why I'm here. I wanted to ask people that are more experienced than me in the Jailbraik community if there's any way to be able to do this, to disable the touch screen or something like that so I can hold my ebook comfortably.

I already did some research and I couldn't find much, so in case it is right now not possible, could anybody lead the way to some resources where I could learn how to develop this on my own?

Thank you in advance.

Kindle 4 NT (stuck at tree with progress bar)

Hi there.

I would much appreciate if you could help me to de-brick my kindle.

Recently, I broke the native display on my K4 NT. Then I ordered and istalled it, while asembling the buttons back, I tored the signal loop from button.

Ok found a donor an local market (with broken display), removed it at put my new display into that Kindle.

Booted. This Kindle was not unjailed, so I applied a jailbreak (unfortunately I dont remember the exact name of this jailbreak, it was taken from the first URL in google search).

After reboot it stucked at Tree logo with approx. 1/4 of progress bar.

What I also did:

1) Kubrick - every step was successfully done, no result.
2) The device is visible from Mfg/fastboot/USB net, Diag page also works.
3) Manual de-bricking - no result.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

PW3 Downgrade through USB?

It seems like there is method that almost any devices including PW3-32
with latest firmware can be downgraded without cracking the kindle by using a special device connecting to USB.

https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm...cket=10#detail

Google Translate here:

Some small partners have a high version of the system, and they want to brush the machine. They can mail the machine, and need the external USB port to perform the downgrade operation. You can not disassemble the machine. The unreliable partner can use the seal to wrap the top of the machine. , to ensure that not disassembled.

The translation is so bad... What it says is if you don't believe that they won't open your device, you can seal the machine.

Unresponsive touchscreen after debrig via serial

Hello,

I bought a used kindle pw2 with a software issue and the followed the debrick instructions provided by Tobias Wooldridge https://gist.github.com/TobiasWooldr...ca75190b9a473f. My main goal was to get a clean firmware install on a version that can be jailbroken. I was successfull but now my touchscreen is unresponsive. I know that the screen worked before i started the recovery. Now my question is there some known issue about my problem?

Error: Cannot find device "usb0" under Ubuntu 18.04

My PW1, PW3 and KT3 were connecting fine, both over USB0 and Wi-Fi, with my PC OS being Ubuntu version 14.04 (32-bit).
I recently upgraded the PC to Ubuntu version 18.04 (64-bit) and was slowly restoring all my old programs and tweaks.
But now I find that I'm only able to connect through ssh over Wi-Fi to all the 3 Kindles - from the command line or through midnight commander's "shell link" option.
Connecting through USB0 doesn't work anymore. I keep getting these error messages:
Quote:

  • Cannot find device "usb0"
  • Requesting an ethernet connection address for "Wired connection 1"

I've regenerated the ssh-keygen file from PC side and copied it as "authorized_keys" to all the kindles under /mnt/us/usbnet/etc.

Any clue to fixing this?

Discussion about software jailbreak of newer fresh-out-of-the-box kindles

I believed I had read enough posts of people doing that, that it was well understood on this forum. I had posted in another thread this:

Quote:

As I recall, neither knc1 nor I were interested in constantly updating the version list on documents. My current understanding, and this has been backed up through reports in the jailbreaking threads, is that ANY software version fresh out of the box has succeeded in using the methods described in that link.

This entire process is potentially dangerous, because it is always possible that amazon could change things, but so far, they have not.

As far as we know, if you use the 5.9.0.6 image for KOA2, the worst that can happen is it will tell you that you cannot do it.

If you use a version that IS too old though, it will brick your kindle. so thats why the versions are not constantly updated, you need to take the risk for yourself, if you want to, and then you can update the wiki with success or failure if you want to.

https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/5_x_Jailbreak

The notes currently in the wiki about the version are specific to being able to do it at any time, even if your kindle has had a software update.

There is a special case about brand-new out-of-the-box kindles that have never received an update.

I personally believe amazon left this in intentionally, in order to support factory issues, but I can only guess.

All that being said, I got a response:

The downgrade worked in the sense the the firmware flashed ok (as confirmed in the menu) but it also left my Kindle in the same state described by others in these threads (only as small rectangle in the screen remained active, error code 2). Since I was still able to USB mount the disk, I triggered a factory reset using the file method. Upon reboot, my Kindle was bricked, with no USB mount possible. I had to use the serial port to drop the latest firmware to the Kindle root directory and upon reboot, the Kindle was working again.

Maybe I could have rooted the Kindle in the funny state immediately after 5.8.9.0.1 had flashed but I didn't try (I thought that a factory reset was all that was needed but it was just the opposite).

Conclusion, the above process is not guaranteed and if something goes wrong, DO NOT FACTORY RESET or you will lose the ability to mount the USB.

Pocketrussion can you explain what you meant by:
"The downgrade worked in the sense the the firmware flashed ok (as confirmed in the menu)"

and
"But it also left my Kindle in the same state described by others in these threads (only as small rectangle in the screen remained active, error code 2)"

I don't understand how you can confirm the firmware version in the menu, but also get a system error code?

This is the first time I have heard about error code 2 since somewhere around 2016. Pocketrussion , do you know which paperwhite 3 specifically you were using ( first 6 of serial ), and which update bin you used?

I don't want to be telling people this works, if it really doesn't. But it definitely worked on the 5.9.0.6 KOA2 I had, and the 5.8.10 Kindle8 ( althogh those are also known as special cases )

Does amazon replace bricked Kindles?

Hey,

Some people here are interested in trying to downgrade an unregistered 5.9.2.0.1 KOA2, including me.

If anything goes wrong will amazon replace bricked devices if they are still within the warranty period?

(maybe a device could brick accidentally during an official update)

Failed Serial Jailbreak

So My New not referbished kindle PW3 is on 5.9.6.1 fresh out of amazon with updates blocked from the beginning. I tried the serial port jailbreak with pins and was successful. then failed when it came to putty (maybe i damaged the serial connectors with the pins?) Putty was working and got to change my kindle's screen then stopped (pin got loose), verified all settings are correct, on COM5, but pin got loose and couldn't get putty to work again. so Now What? I'm terrible at soldering so that option is out. I bought NEW FTDI TTL-232RG-VREG1V8-WE CABLE USB SERIAL 1.8V WIRE 100MA, WGGE WG-026 10 Pieces and 5 Colors Test Lead Set & Alligator Clips, 20.5 inches, and 1pc 4"x7 3/4" Desco High-Density Anti-Static Foam; Conductive ESD IC Insertion. Don't know what to do now.

PW3 Force downgrade caused "Your Kindle needs repair" HELP PLZ!

Hello everyone!

I've got a kindle PW3 with fw 5.8.11 new out of the box two months ago. And I've searched for any jailbreaks for the firmware. I know that theoretically it's not possible for that firmware, but there're exceptions for Kindles new out of the box according to this link.

But the most stupid thing I have done is trying to downgrade it to 5.7.4, and of course it failed   (I should have installed 5.8.9.0.1 fw!!).

And now my Kindle is experiencing bootloops (Kindle start -> progress bar -> couple of more restarts -> "Your Kindle needs repair).

But there's still hope as my PC is able to recognize the Kindle as a removable storage for a period of short time (about 20 seconds), and then disappear. I've read some threads on the forum and found that the only possible way is to split an official firmware into file pieces and copy them one by one to the Kindle when it's recognizable, and then combine them into a full firmware.bin file. The method comes from 4PDA, but no links are provided so I could just try my best.

It's easy to split into parts and copy them to Kindle, which I already succeeded. But just can't get them combined as the I/O speed is too slow and time is limited.

Also tried split file and cat them into one file, but still not that possible.

Anyone had the same experience? Asking for help now. :help: :help: :help:
Thanks in advance! :thanks:

KT3 Kindle e-reader(KT3) stuck in Bootloop

Dear all,
I'm new to mobileread so I apologize for my ignorance and in great need of your help. I have checked all the resources available (I guess) and pretty sure my kindle is no better than a paper weight. Since no one has posted anything regarding resurrecting a Kindle touch basic 8th edition :help:

I own a Kindle touch 3 basic which is stuck in bootloop due to unknown reason. I think it was when I tried to restart it using power button during one of the lag sessions in koreader, I still curse myself for doing that.
It was running on 5.11.x.x jail-broken by downgrading and then upgrading to latest firmware(5.11.x.x) with MRPI, KUAL, KOReader and that's it.
I think I've read all the threads regarding KT3 but none seem to help or even touch the topic of bootloop. If there is something available related to what I mentioned above, please be generous and point me in that direction.

I hope to receive reply from one of good samaritans.

Thanks for reading
Regards

Kus

What difference does registering make for a jailbreak?

The instructions to jailbreak the 5.8.* firmwares say you should register the device before jailbreaking. It never explains why.

Is this still relevant?

Edit: the wiki says some menus are not accessible if the device isn't registered. Which menus exactly?

Where does the kindle store book covers?

I backed up /documents and I did a reset.
Most of the book covers are gone. Is there a special place the kindle stores them?

I usually transfer my mobi files using calibre. The books come with a cover.jpg.

(I actually find a lot of the book covers not so nice as thumbnails. Is there a way to selectively disable some book covers, either through the kindle or calibre?)

Benefits of JailBreaking?

I just got a Voyage and I kind of want to Jailbreak it, just so I can change the screen savers.

But what else can I do with it? I couldn't find a list of things you could do.

I heard about an improved PDF reader? That would be nice, right know the only real option is landscape mode.
