PW Upgrading to newest firmware for unsupported kindle!

$

Hi everyone,

I was searching everywhere for a place to ask my question! As you guys know amazon has published their newest firmware which is 5.9.x.x, and that was meant to be for the newest devices. However, is it possible to manipulate the firmware to be installed on older devices since they stuck on the firmware 5.6.1.1?

Idk if the jailbreak can help or not.. I’m seeking help on that to give the people with older kindles a hope to continue enjoying reading on these devices.

Thank you.

KT3 Problem with downgrading KT3

So I am very new to this so go easy please.

I'm trying to downgrade the software on my Kindle 8th Gen (KT3 I think the code for it is) and everytime I put the update_KT3_5.8.0_initial.bin file to the root of my device, then eject it and go to update it, the "update your kindle" button is greyed out. When I plug it back in it looks like it deleted the file and I have to copy it over again.

Please help :iloveyou:

Updating and JB a 2012 PW - completely lost after hours

Hi, after my second attempt to do this and spending several hours I am even more confused than before.

Maybe an experienced regular could help me to find the solution.

I got a 2012 Paperwhite (the first edition) with 5.3.1 Firmware and I want to Jailbreak it, so that I can install this one specific PDF reader (forgot the name just now) and use custom screensavers.

BUT I also want/need to do a firmware update. The reason:
My current version has this very inconvenient old Bookmark system where I need to dig deep into the menu each time I want to load my latest bookmark.
This is actually the only reason for the planned firmware update since I hope a newer version will give me the newer bookmark system.

Here is my problem.... and the part where I got confused since there a so many different informations.
To which version of the Firmware can I update savely?
will a Firmware update fix my Bookmark problem?/ Will I have the newer Bookmarks after updating?
Where can I download the correct version of the firmware? I guess if I just update directly from the amazon site it will eliminate the ability to jailbreak it later, right?
Once the update is done, which version of the many jailbreaks is the right one for the 2012 pw?

Many questions, right? I hope I'm not asking too much

Thank you

PS: I use the Kindle almost exclusively in airplane mode

PW3 Quick help with debrick, format partition 4?

$

Hi,

sooo, last prime day I got a PW3, the day after it I bricked it :wall:

I wanted to try chroot. First I tried Arch because I'm a dumbass - the kernel obviosly is way too old for that. Then I saw this "UPDATE" hint under the debootstrap boxes: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Deb...t_architecture Thus I made a jessie image.

And here is where the fuckup happened: I connected my Kindle to usb, while the Arch image was still mounted, and excanged the image file. In the wiki it says "This seems to be safe as long as userstore is not used as USB drive" (below "Setup Chroot Environment" box: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Deb...ot_Environment ). Well I can tell you that it is certainly not safe to use it as usb drive while the image is mounted :D

So fortunately I can still log into the kindle via serial connection, and it seems like my partition 4 got wrecked:
Code:

[root@kindle root]# fsck /dev/mmcblk0p
/dev/mmcblk0p1  /dev/mmcblk0p2  /dev/mmcblk0p3  /dev/mmcblk0p4
[root@kindle root]# fsck /dev/mmcblk0p1
fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
/dev/mmcblk0p1: clean, 5024/14520 files, 314857/450000 blocks
[root@kindle root]# fsck /dev/mmcblk0p2
fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
/dev/mmcblk0p2: clean, 1084/2112 files, 35710/64000 blocks
[root@kindle root]# fsck /dev/mmcblk0p3
fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
/dev/mmcblk0p3 is mounted.

WARNING!!!  Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause
SEVERE filesystem damage.

Do you really want to continue (y/n)? no

check aborted.
[root@kindle root]# fsck /dev/mmcblk0p4
fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/mmcblk0p4

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem.  If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

[root@kindle root]#

My root partition was read only at the time, since I moved my mount point to /tmp, I hope it is still all fine. According to the wiki ( https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kin...ing#Partitions ) partition 4 is the user (/mnt/us) partition, and it's content can safely be deleted. So can I just reformat it and my kindle might work again? One weird thing is that fsck seems to think it's an ext2 partition, while the wiki says FAT32

I'm completely new to all this Kindle stuff, so hint would make me very happy :thanks:

Debrick Kindle Paperwhite after failed firmware update

$

I have a Kindle Paperwhite bought on 2013 (I guess a PW1 because serial starts with B024).

It was running firmware 5.4.4.2 and had JB done, KUAL installed (as well as python, screensavers and others), and i think Rescue Pack (never had to use it later).

I decided to upgrade firmware, so before that I did the following steps:

- Re-installed the last version of JailBreak (from kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N.zip/kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip) to have a recent JB.

- Couldn't install the JB hotfix (JailBreak-1.15.N-FW-5.x-hotfix) because the "update my Kindle" option remained gray. I thought it could be caused by my old FW.

- Re-installed KUAL, and installed MrPI

- Manually downloaded FW update_kindle_5.6.1.1.bin, transfered to Kindle and tapped "Update my Kindle". (Note: I used this old FW because i thought to try to install the JB hotfix on it before installing the last FW version, but i never got so far :)

Result:
- The installation of FW 5.6.1.1 never ended. My Kindled restarted during the upgrade, and the first time it showed the ** BRIDGE ** message, but starting up the device never ended.

- It came into a boot loop that ends up with a "you kindle needs repair" "repair code: 2"

- The Kindle seems to consider it is using FW 5.6.1.1 now because the "needs repair" screen shows version: 2689890035

- Each time I connect the USB cable, it enters the boot loop again that ends with the "needs repair" screen (although it does not show the BRIDGE message anymore).

What I have tried:
- When connected to a Windows machine, a USB drive shows up for the fraction of a second, but disappears pretty fast

- I have tried to copy a ENABLE_DIAGS file, as well as a DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file to the device, but have got no result

- As the "D:\" drive shows up just for a fraction of a second, i have created a Windows batch script with a loop that tries to continuosly copy the file, but the device just remains in its boot loop.

- The mfgTool.exe scan does not detect any Kindle.

- I have recharged the Kindle overnight and tried again, just in case, but got the same result

Questions:
- Is there a better way to copy the ENABLE_DIAGS file in the fraction of a second that the device shows up in Windows? (I have access to a Mac and could use Linux on VirtualBox too).

- Is there any way I could recover my Kindle using the USB cable?

I have been reading the forum for several hours already, but I seem unable to find how to recover the Kindle using a USB cable.

Could somebody point me to the right next steps? Thanks

K5 Closing popups(dialogs) from commandline?

This is partly related to my other topic: WebLaunch fullscreen browser crash after few hours

As a hobby project, I'm doing a total conversion of my Jail broken KT. It'll run HTML5 page serving as smart home control panel. The problem is the browser crashes once in a while with "Application Error" popup over the screen. Or if the WiFi is unstable and connection is lost, then the conneciton popup is displayed, even if the connection is restored few seconds later.

Is there any way how to:
- enumerate visible windows/dialogs? To detect there is such popup I want to dismiss?
- close it (this is obviously the most important)

I tried even to stop/restart framework, but that seems not to help at all.
Plus I believe I have seen a topic somewhere here at mobileread.com mentioning a way how to find out visible window or something like that. Unfortunately I haven't saved it and I cannot find it anymore.

Thanks in advance for any tip
Aleq

Kindle Oasis 2 FW 5.9.6.1

Could someone please tell me if I can jailbreak Kindle Oasis 2 with FW 5.9.6.1? if so can someone please post the instructions? This is the first time I JB a Kindle and I feel confused with the instructions.

I'm sorry if this is a repeated question, it seems that people are ok when they update an already JB Kindle, but I can't see a JB for 5.9.6.x.

Thanks in advance.

Requesting diags and diags_kernel images for PW3

As the title says, I'm requesting diags and diags_kernel images for PW3 on version 5.9.4. Little background, I got two bricked PW3s that I attached serial ports to and updated to unbrick, though when I try to access diag from uboot it doesn't work. I think someone flashed a wrong image to them, seeing that when I openend them, it looked like someone has already attached a serial port before.

Cheers

PW2 no fastboot

Hello,
I bought a used Kindel PW2, which does not start properly and crashes frequently. I suspect that there is some software defect and after research i am trying to fix it by installing the firmware (https://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/PW2/). So I made a serial connection to my Kindel and tried to get into fastboot mode with the Uboot command "bist fastboot". According to the output, the device changes to fastboot mode, but my Laptop(Linux) does not recognize it as a fastboot device. The normal usb connection to the device while booted works and i can copy files, for this reason i rule out the usb port as a suspect. If anyone has an idea how I can fix the problem, I would be very grateful.

Ps. The previous owner said something about a failed jailbreak

Hello,

I recently bricked my PW3 and i am in the process of attempting to correct it now. I recently ordered a 1.8V serial adapter and I am first attempting to fully charge the device for 24 hours in hopes a reset with the power button works after a full charge.

Is it possible to access the device without the USB adapter or is that a requirement?

Some hacking inspiration for the unjailbreakable kindles

Thinking outside the box.

In 2004 when the new monochrome ipod came out, known as the fourth generation ipod, it was impossible to run custom software on it, such as the Linux OS.

This was because it had an encrypted second stage bootloader. The previous generation ipods didn't.

A member of the ipodlinux community found a way to execute some limited amount of code, not enough to dump the decrypted bootloader. However the code could send instructions to the built in ipod piezo speaker. It could only make squeaks and clicks.

He proceeded to dump the bootloader by instructing the piezo speaker to squeak out the whole bootloader, which he recorded with a microphone - leading to the full jailbreak of the 4th gen ipod.

KV What is best OS version and KOReader version for KV?

$

Last December, I did my first Kindle jailbreak on my KV and put OS v 5.8.11 on it, then installed KUAL and KOReader v2015.11-3-g9e0be45, which, as far as I knew, was the latest stable version at the time.

In light testing KOReader seemed to be pretty good, but the top part of the screen did not always refresh, particularly when leaving KOReader, making it hard to know what control options were available and where they were. Beause I was new to JB, KUAL, KOReader, and 5.8.11, I was not sure where to start or what to expect or how to ask questions. I got caught up in other things and never got around to seeking help with KOReader.

As a hedge against the direction Kindle design seems to be going, I got another KV since mine is pushing 4 years old. I JB it fresh out of the box and now need to decide which OS version to start with. I assume there must have been some earlier OS version KUAL version combination that did not have the screen refresh problem I described above.

My questions are whether this problem was fixed or which earlier versions should I use instead?

PW2 Help needed: Firmware defective, no amazon-login possible

$

Hello!

Some two years ago I have acquired a used, "defective" PW2-3G for a small price.

The "defect" is that the device cannot login to amazon.

After entering the credentials it tries to connect and says

Unable to connect
There was an error while registering your kindle. Please try again later.

It's possible to use the device-internet-browser to create a new amazon-account, but it's impossible to login to this account afterwards.

Amazon-Support was really nice and tried for several days to help me overcome that, asking me to create several logfiles and sending me several patchfiles in return, but finally they gave up.

Is there any way to rewrite the COMPLETE firmware incl. all initial parameters, to really really bring a Kindle PW2-3G to a REAL out-of-box-state?

I have just downgraded the device to 5.4.3.2 and successfully installed the Jailbreak, so I decided to give the problem another try, asking here for help.
It's not crucial, I am using Calibre to organize my ebooks, but there are some account-dependant functions I would like to use (wikipedia, dictionaries, etc.)

Possibilities for folder organization support on Kindles?

Sometime in the past year I read a possibly old post that stated that it is possible to open a book in the native reader by command. In addition, KOReader ond Coolreader have file browsers and can launch reader apps.

It seems to me that it should be a small step to have the KOReader file browser show azw* files and allow the user to open an azw* file with the Kindle native reader app or to use the file browser as a starting point for a standalone app to open azw* books from the file browser.

I could get this functionality by converting my books to epub, but I am becoming fond of XRAY functionality and frequently use the Kindle dictionaries.

I hope this is possible and that the suggestion strikes some developer's fancy. I do know that over the years many have expressed strong interest in organizing books in folders on Kindles.

Booklet version of Kual 2.7 does not 'pin' to the recent home screen

$

First, thanks guys for developing Kual - brilliant job.

I have a query regarding Kual. I searched for previous posts but I couldn't find anything relevant so here goes. I have a PW3 and the device updated itself silently last week to firmware 5.9.5.1. I was able to restore the JB using the 1.15 hotfix by NiLuJe and I also installed booklet version of Kual 2.7 - everything is working again.

However, one thing I've noticed is the new booklet version of Kual doesn't 'pin' itself to the Kindle recent home screen and every time I open a new book or booklet Kual is pushed further down the 'recent' list. My Kual icon is now on the 3rd screen. I never had this problem with the older version of Kual.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or can someone suggest a fix?

Thanks

Jailbreaking PW3

Hi all,

First post so be gentle, also I'll apologise in advance if this is in the wrong forum category.

SO.. I've just recently taken delivery of my Amazon Paperwhite 3 4GB version from ebay which I got for a steal. Anyway I've been reading about some of the fantastic hacks and jailbreaking that can be done and so I was wondering whether it would be possible with mine? Whether this be software based or using a serial connection.

The kindle is currently running 5.9.7 (3330440020), however there is an option to update her if required.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
