Hello, I'll try to be succinct. Apologies if I am misusing the forum, any pointers are appreciated.

I own a Paperwhite, Model # EY21 (5th Gen?). It has been unusable since Approx. 28th Oct 2014.

Cause/circumstances surrounding bricking (is bricked the correct term? It would help with my googling, thank you):

*Harsh conditions crossing the length of Vietnam on a motorbike (humidity, dust, a lot of pressure/bangs on the backpack holding the device.).
*I used the web browser when the device crashed, if memory serves.
*I might or might not have performed an update on a bad network prior to the crash. I do not recall.

In other words: Might be software, might be hardware.

The device has ever since, and still does, halt at about 95% on the progress bar/tree of life-screen.

I was thinking I might try loading a new (old.) firmware on the system. Where do I start?

hi everyone, before i start asking for help i just wanted to put a disclaimer here:
i just entered the world of jailbreaking and kindle/ebook related exploits today, i'm not 100% with all the vocab and such, so if i sound dumb or uneducated here many apologies in advance!

here's the rundown:
i jailbroke my kindle paperwhite, mainly to get screensavers and a nice pdf reader. i followed this guide for the main jailbreak, and this follow up guide for KUAL, MPRI, and KOreader. everything seemed to be going good! there was a tiny hiccup with getting screensavers, but i downgraded my firmware to 5.4.4 and followed this guide and it was working out fine again. i have run into the issue of the screensavers reverting back to the amazon given rotation, but i'm able to troubleshoot it and bring it back to my own screensaver.

now here comes the problem.
books and pdfs are not appearing on the kindle.

i had no books or anything before i jailbroke it, i actually reset the whole thing before hand to make sure nothing went wrong.

i've tried transfering the standard pdf over to the kindle via usb - just putting it in the documents folder. i've tried doing the amazon email it to your kindle thing. i've downloaded calibre and transfered the pdf as is via that - then when that didn't work i tried converting the pdf to mobi and sending it to the kindle then with calibre. still! didn't! work! i've even tried plugging the pdf into photoshop, making sure the format is perfect for the kindle screen, resaving it and then doing all of the above over again and still! it would not work.

i feel like i'm a 5 year old about to throw a tantrum, what can i be doing wrong!?!??!! :angry:

I have been thinking about purchasing a Kindle (probably a Kindle 4) to use in a photo frame project. I was hoping someone could offer advice on a good starting approach.

The project concept:
Use a library of photos as a daily image calendar. Take a photo from a directory, and overlay it with text for today's date, and a short message (eg Good morning). Change the photo every day.

My initial thought was to do this with a Raspberry Pi as a VNC server, and leave it running with a photo slideshow, but this sounds terribly inefficient.

My next idea is to use the Pi to do the image processing (scrape the web for cool photos, apply an overlay, save it as a single picture), and pass that to the Kindle. What would be the best way to display this picture? Does the Kindle support FTP in addition to SSH over USB? If so, it should be simple to set up a cron job to pass a new photo to a screensaver program every 24 hours, unless I'm missing something.

I am reasonably proficient with Python and Linux development (bash scripting, C).

I really don't want to go through the Jailbreak process, mainly because I am not a developer, and don't quite understand some of the instructions.

But i really want my Collections to be synced between my device, my Amazon kindle ebook list (which may not be possible if I have non-Amazon books?), and Calibre.

My Paperwhite serial number if G090 G105 7232 ONO7
Firmware version is Kindle 5.9.4 (3278740046).

My computer is a Mac.

Can this device actually be jailbreaked (jailbroken)? Will I be able to sync Collections? Are there directions that a nondeveloper might understand?

There have been a few ports here of interpreters for playing Interactive Fiction games of the z-code type:

Such games can now be created directly on the Kindles! Inform is a command line compiler to create such z-code games.

• The executable and supporting files were extracted from the Debian Jessie repository(maintainer:Jan Christoph Nordholz - https://packages.debian.org/jessie/inform) and re-packaged for the Kindles. • The frotz interpreter is a Kindle port by fvek (See 1st link above).

Installation and usage:

• Extract zip into /mnt/us/extensions/.
• Select inform6 from the KUAL menu. This opens kterm in the folder /mnt/us/extensions/inform6/.
• Create your own inform story file(a normal text file) with .inf extension and save in the inform6/src/ folder. You can use a command line editor like vi or nano. For help on creating story files, syntax, etc., see links below.
• Compile by running script: ./inf.sh <story file name> from the inform6/ folder. The compiled z-code file with .z5 extension is created in the inform6/ folder.
• Run the compiled z-code game with the script ./frz.sh <story file name>.z5. In the game, type q to quit and return to kterm.

How would I go about updating the CAs on a Kindle 3G? The script found here seems to only work in bash and also the Kindle only has OpenSSL 0.9.8j instead of OpenSSL 1.1.0f. Is there a way I could update the version of OpenSSL on the kindle and add these CAs?

Hi! Is anyone else having issues with Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading right now? :blink:

Since yesterday, every time I try to check something out from my desktop computer, I get the following error message:

I've tried checking out books directly through my Kindle Fire as well, but no luck there either.

I've reported the issue to the Amazon customer support help desk, but I don't have a great deal of confidence in them at this point.

There are lots of threads, I can’t tell with thread I should follow because most threads are about KP3 jailbreak with OTA update.

My Kindle Keyboard 3G is not displaying grayscale due to a Waveform mismatch.
I am NOT using a replacement screen.

The diagnostics mode shows my issue:

I used to upload and read all my books on Google Play Books from my Android phone. Now I am planing to purchase Kindle 8th Gen E-reader but unable to download books from Play books to read on Kindle. I don't even have copies of those books. Is there anyway to read Google Play Books on Kindle?

P.S I live in India and Kindle is the only e-reader which is available in budget.

Hello all, I've just jumped into this whole jailbreaking thing with an old Kindle 3 and been successful at getting things functional, but I'm having trouble setting up some ease of use shortcuts. Specifically, I'm looking to add a shortcut to KUAL that will launch a new session of myts and run a script inside that session that will ssh to a computer connected over usbnetworking.

I can start a myts shell and run the script from there successfully but I can't figure out how to launch the shell from KUAL and have it run the script automatically. So far I've tried calling my script from the KUAL menu entry, creating a custom version of the /mnt/us/myts/myts.sh launch script, and editing the shebang at the top of my script to use myts with no luck. What is the best way to accomplish this?

Hoping someone awesome will help me. I bought a new Oasis because I need VoiceView- which worked great until the bluetooth kept flaking out and Amazon Support told me to reset. Doing this solved the issue with the bluetooth but erased the VoiceView voices file.

SO they sent me to amazons site to download the files but the one for the new Oasis is corrupted on the site. I have spent WEEKS trying to get one of the files from a different and not- corrupt source. Someone on the forum below had the issue and said a member sent her a copy of her file and file is "Salk"?? But that user is no longer active.

Hi everyone,

First of all I apologize for my English.

I have a Kindle voyage jailbreaked through the serial port, and it worked without problems, a few weeks ago I was traveling, and my Kindle ran out of battery and I enter a cycle of restarts with the screen frozen.

I think that the file system was corrupted slightly, and that it can be recovered with the fsck command, however I have tried to access the serial port, but I only get access to uboot, fastboot, etc. that is, it does not get to load linux or its commands.

I want to know if it is possible to back up the information in any way, make a full memory dump to recover my information.

I found several links to repair kindle paperwhite, but not for Kindle voyage, is it possible to repair my kindle as described in these links?
In other words, are paperwhite images compatible?

Is anybody else having this problem? I can Only Register Kindle Oasis's, Kindle Voyages, Kindle Paperwhites, Kindle 7th and 8th Generations. Anything older than that refuses to register.
