PW2 Need some help with Fonts on 5.6.5

$

Hi all, I've just recently picked up a PW2 and, without realizing it would automatically update, I'm stuck on 5.6.5.

I am severely visually impaired and bought the thing thinking that I could just modify the fonts or invert the colors (white on black is much easier to see), but now that the jailbreak has been postponed indefinitely, I'm wondering if there are any other ways to modify the fonts. I don't mind trying to modify the actual books, but I haven't had much luck.

I was hoping to even be able to simply make all of the fonts bold in a book, but I cannot find an easy tutorial on this anywhere. If anyone has any step by step tutorials that might actually work, I'd appreciate the help.

I'd really rather be able to upload the files to the send-to-kindle site so that the files would sync between my ipad and kindle. (I bought the PW2 so that I could read outside--can't see the ipad screen outside). I say that to say that I cannot upload azw3 files (the only way to use Publisher's fonts that I've found).

Any help would be appreciated. My PW2 is safely in Airplane mode, in case the jailbreak does come out, but if I could solve this font issue some other way I don't mind missing out on other features of being able to jailbreak. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Enor.

KV Kindle Voyage 5.6.5 recent sorting broken

I just updated to version 5.6.5 it is jailbroken after the upgrade.

When I sort All Items by Recent and open a book that is 4'th in the list it should jump at the top of the list.

When I navigate back to the list, it's still 4th. When I open KUAL or a Collection it moves to the top of the list.

Has anyone experienced this problem or am I the only one? The sorting worked correctly in 5.6.2.1.

If I do a factory reset, will it remove the jailbreak?

DX(G) Restoring back to connect as media device

Hi I am new to the forum and DXG world so go easy on me.

I recently tried the extra monitor hack with VNC viewer, where you jailbreak then enable usb networking and then use putty. It didnt work but I figured it might have something to do with windows vista or something. No biggie I figured I will try it again later.
The kindle is still working fine. Except I noticed the battery symbol is stuck as the charging symbol. I am most concerned about safely setting this back to where I can add other pdfs and books to my kindle. Right now when I connect it to a computer it doesnt do anything.

I have done a lot of searching on forums and google and didn't see anyone talk about how to safely do this. I dont want to mess up.
Is there some command that I put in debug mode?

Thank you for the help and hopefully it is helpful for others, though I must be missing something because I didnt see anyone else with this problem

broken screen - some way of changing the page layout?

Hi!

Today my old Kindle Keyboard fell dramatically and the screen broke, so now I have a permanent white line on top of the screen. It's just wide enough to not show the first line in every page, no matter the text or line size.

So I was wondering if there's any way to modify or hack the software on the kindle so somehow luckily it would start showing the text lines lower. I dunno if what I'm asking is stupid or not, as maybe there's some available modification for kindle software that would allow me to do that?

Thank you!

you can see how it looks in here

It didn't happen at 11/11/2015, 1100 UTC.
So I guess the war with Amazon will continue.

Maybe B.D. can surprise them, 12/07/2015.

PW2 5.6.5 Jailbreak Without Soldering

$

I was one of those waiting for the closed kindle 5.6.5 jailbreak so when that fell through I decided to have a go at opening the PW2 and installing the jailbreak via the serial port.

I have several PW2s so I was keen to get on with it.

First up, opening the PW2 is a lot easier than I thought it would be. The plastic bezel which has to be lifted is very tough and flexible and there is little to no chance of breaking it. The biggest risk is to damage the screen but with a bit of care and by going slowly that risk is fairly small also. I read elsewhere on this forum that using a heat gun or hair dryer makes it easier and that is certainly my experience. It also makes reassembly easier to heat the kindle and the bezel (and hence the residual glue) before snapping the bezel back in place.

After doing the first PW2 I found it easier to lift the bezel by doing the top edge last. This is because there is some pretty tough double sided sticky tape under the top edge and it is easier to work the bezel free by lifting it evenly across the full width. Anyway, there is a fairly high chance that the tape might tear a little but it is not a problem for reassembly. The rest is straightforward.

I used a TTL-232RG-VREG1V8-WE usb to serial cable with an ftdi chip in it. The cable has six open tinned wires on the serial end.

For the first PW2 I soldered wires to the serial pads. I have got a really good temperature controlled fine tip soldering iron and a decent desk top magnifying glass but because I am left handed and the pads are hard up against a metal cover I found it very difficult to do the soldering. With some perseverance I did succeed and by connecting ground, tx, and rx only (no other voltage connections required) I succeeded in getting the jailbreak installed.

I have a windows 10 pc and I was running Teraterm as the serial program interface. The TTL-232RG installed automatically and Teraterm found it on a usb com port ok. However, when I first connected the usb to serial cable and set Teraterm to 115200 I was getting immediate key responses but it was gibberish. It took a couple of 15 second reboots to get the PW2 and Teraterm to sync properly. This was probably a timing error on my part but eventually the link settled down and was flawless. I also found that I had to be really quick after a reboot to hit an enter key to get into uboot.

Back to the point of this post. I wasn't looking forward to wrestling with the soldering iron for my other PW2s so having realised I only needed two 'difficult' connections for tx and rx (earth connections are available in many places - eg, on metal covers, on screws, and solder pads) and that I only needed those connections for a couple of minutes I devised a simpler method which was OK for a temporary connection - see photos.

I simply sticky taped a piece of high density foam to the top of a cover next to the serial port pads and used the foam to support two sewing pins that are pushed through the foam and down onto the tx and rx pads. The big breakthrough was that when I raided my wife's sewing box I found both an orange and a yellow pin which happen to be the wire colours for rx and tx on the usb to serial cable! The pins push into the solder enough to make the connections more than good enough to do the job. It takes only a few minutes to get the jailbreak installed (note: the jailbreak was preloaded via the normal usb connection and the password was pre-caclulated using:

print("fiona%s"%hashlib.md5("905A22014516049H\n".e ncode('utf-8')).hexdigest()[13:16])

on an IDLE platform.

I don't know if it is a feature of the TTL-232RG cable or not but it helped only having to use three wires. The earth was easy as it was just clipped onto a screw head as in the photo. So it comes down to just getting two connections in place and that turns out to be very easy also.

I hope this helps someone else get the job done.

Tutorial Serial Jailbreaking your Paperwhite for Dummies

$

This is how you jailbreak a Paperwhite 2 using windows software. Good luck, fellow kindlers!

Like most things in life, this guide is probably full of mistakes. If you find any, please let me know so I can fix them.

Part 1: Get what you need!

1. Your kindle! And its serial #.

Write that down. (apparently you should hide your serial #. So i've hidden part of mine. Come @ me, haxors!)

Attachment 143756

2. USB -> Serial converter board.

This is what most people use: Jim's Board because it's cheap & does the job.

You want to specifically order option #3. This is necessary because your kindle uses 1.8v signals and if you use 3.3v or 5.0v, you can blow up your chips.

Attachment 143755

3. Two USB cables to connect to your Windows computer

We are lazy, so it will be most convenient to be able to hook up the kindle + the serial converter board at the same time.

If you are not using windows, then you are probably some ultra-smart linux pro who doesn't need a dummies guide anyways.

4. usb converter drivers

Download and install the correct drivers from the ftdichip website. These are what will allow your computer to talk to the serial converter board.

5. Soldering iron, wires, clips, pins, magnifier, etc.

Whatever you need to solder stuff. It's a delicate operation.

6. Small screwdrivers, thin knives, and some tupperware

Whatever you need to break apart your kindle & get at the tasty goodness inside.

The containers are essential to hold your parts so they don't get lost!

7. Python software

Get python here. Install on your machine. I used version 3.5.0, but other versions should work fine.

Don't worry, we're not going to write complex code!

8. PuTTy software

Download PuTTy here..

This is the program that lets your computer talk to the kindle over the serial port. You don't need to install it; it just runs.

9. Mobileread Softwares

Download and unzip all these awesome packages provided by Mobileread smartguys. Keep them handy, we'll come to them later.
  • "K5 Jailbreak (5.0.x - 5.4.4.2)" Software. This is what unlocks the power! (The jailbreak software was recently updated to behave better for our serial jailbreaks, so we are going to download the latest version from NiJuLe's daily snapshot thread instead of getting the older version from the Jailbreak thread.) (thanks NiJuLe!)
Hint: Use "7-Zip" or "WinRar" to unpack the jailbreak software.
  • Kual AND Kual Helper This runs the goodies you want to install. (thanks twobob!)
  • MRPI You need this to install those goodies. (thanks NiLuJe!)
  • Screensaver hack we'll install this to confirm the jailbreak worked. (thanks NiLuJe!)

K4 OnlineScreensaver Hack wget issue

$

Hi there,
I'm new to this board but I'm already using the information for a long time.
I've been using a black K4NT for about a year with MKK, KUAL, ScreenSaver Hack and OnlineScreensaver. But somehow the function died without any reason to me.
I spent now two days resetting, reinstalling, reconfiguring without any success. For me it looks like wget, whih is used in Online Screensaver, cannot acceess "the world" anymore.
Installing Screensaver will show me the new image, but the job which should copy the image from the webserver is not working anymore.
Can that have a relation with the 4.1.3 update?

I can find a wget access log sometimes in the webserver log but it shows a incorrect size to me?
Code:

192.168.178.154 - - [18/Nov/2015:21:11:02 +0100] "GET /KindleDisplay_SZ.png HTTP/1.1" 200 28725 "-" "Wget"
SSH access is working, but on shell, wget is also not working...
But I'm even not sure if it's a wget problem anymore... I'm running out of ideas honestly.. :(

Hope someone here is having some more?

Thanks,
Markus

Anyone has DXG can help me run dmesg? I suspect my 2nd hand DXG has no 3G module

Hi all,

I need DXG users' help on this. From setteing, I can see Network Capability: 3G. But when I "Turn on wifi", it end up time out. I suspect the one I got has no 3G module in it. I tried to run dmesg and cannot see any message that looks like the 3G module being initiated. Can any DXG user tell me what will be the message in dmesg if there is 3G module present?

Also, if I really missed the 3G module, can I purchase a spare DTP-600W to re-enable the 3G?

Many thanks!

I wanna learn how the Kindle works specifically and also how the jailbreaks work.

DX(G) If 3G not broken, can use PC to share internet to get DXG back on Kindle Store?

$

As title. Well from my another thread, I found out that the DXG that I just got in used market has no 3G module in it. :smack:

To get it connect to internet, I added usbNetwork in DXG, add default routing, enable ICS on Win7 and now DXG can ssh/ping out to internet. But when I select "Go to Kindle Store" or "Experimental Browser", the UI will prompt me for "do you wish to enable wifi by now". If I say no, it will discard my action. If I say yes, since my 3G was broken, I will only wait and timeout. The DXG was actually already online, just it doesn't know. Is there anyway that can bypass the "enable wifi prompt"? Or how to inform the system that it is already online?

Thanks a lot! :thumbsup::2thumbsup

How to tell if my Kindle is rooted

PW3 Sim Card Pinout

$

It seems that there is an unused pinout for sim cards on the PW3. Looking further into the sim card standard it seems that they have begun to implement a purpose for the 7th (Serial I/O) and 8th (USB-ICC) pins. Rather than the standard 6 pins I have seen.

According to ISO/IEC 7816-12:2005, USB-ICC is another area in sim cards that can be utilized for additional data.

Would this be a viable place to implement extra storage capacity? Seems far-fetched, but interesting.

PW2 in strange state

I posted this over in the Mr. Packages forum, figured I would get a better response here.

I went to install the ScreenSavers Hack on my PW2. Saw the link for the Package installer. Installed the KUAL extension, put the .bin file into /mrpackages and told KUAL to install it. It claimed success, said "restarting UI" and the Kindle rebooted.

It gets ~90% of the way through the reboot and hangs. Sits there for a while, then reboots and hangs again. Repeat.

Plugging in a USB connection to a computer, the Kindle shows up as a drive. After I eject it seems to work normally. So I placed the uninstall file into /mrpackages and used KUAL to do Mr Packages install. Again the reboot and hang.

Deleted the /mrpackages and extensions/MRInstaller folders and did a manual restart.

Same problem.

So, I'm not adding/removing ANYthing at this point until I get this resolved. Would appreciate suggestions on how to proceed. USBNetworking works fine and I am comfortable at the command line. Help?

Buying the latest Paperwhite... jailbreak, calibre?

$

Hi all, I'm planning to buy my girlfriend a kindle paperwhite for christmas--

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...NRGKDLDE6LWIZP

here are my questions:

is it still possible to jailbreak it using only a USB cable, and add screensavers.
Can i use it with calibre (like I can with my paperwhite 2) to read mobi file formats?

I'm worried that the latest Paperwhite might be really locked down, so I'll either buy a used Paperwhite 2, or, if you say that the New Paperwhite is fine, I'll get that.

Thanks!
