(PW2) Ripped off TX serial pad. What now?

Hello everyone. I've been a long time reader, but never got around to registering. I recently jailbroke my voyage via the serial port running 5.6.5, and I've soldered SMD components of all kinds. I'm not particularly new to soldering or linux commands.

Anyway. About a week ago I saw an almost brand new PW2 on ebay with the box and the $40 amazon case. It was too good of a deal to pass up and won that bad boy for $45 (without special offers, as I later found out!).

Pictures showed it was running 5.4.4.2 but I suppose the seller must have connected it to wifi and it got 5.6.1.0.2 OTA. So in pieces it went and I started wiring up my trusty CP2104 to it. I still don't know how it happened but the TX wire (to RX on the adapter, opposite to the ground point) stuck to my sleeve (idiot mistake, I know :smack: ) and I yanked the wire along with the pad off the board. At least I know my joint was decent! :D It was working at first, and was giving me output in minicom as it started ( "Welcome to Kindle" - the whole shebang), but then I had to be an idiot...

Wish this wasn't a multi layer board, as I could just solder to a trace. So what do I do now? The RX and ground are fine, but are there any other attachment points for TX - maybe an SMD resistor or something like that?

Thankfully this PW2 isn't bricked, but I still want to proceed with the jailbreak, if possible.

Thanks a million for any help,
Dan

Want to turn off backlight with JB – PW3 or Voyage?

Hi!

I'm considering buying a new Kindle – either a Paperwhite 3 or a Voyage. Obviously I'd prefer to buy a Voyage, but I need to be able to turn off the backlight after having rooted it. Does anyone have any experience with turning off the backlight on a Voyage or Paperwhite 3? Can it be done on both?

Kindlet "Google Images" Gadget Suggestion in Searching for Words

$

I dont know If this is the right place to ask. But I want to know two things:
1. Is this a good idea?
2. how can we tell Amazon to apply it for their next update?
Most of the kindle or book readers encounter difficult words; like names of trees, kinds of animals, and so on. These things are easier for native speakers to find out. But for non-native speakers of English like us; even the dictionary won't help, since the dictionary can explain in words only. Google Images i think is the best solution for some words that needs images to explain them.
Thanks:)
The image example is in the attachment.

K4 Can't enter USB download mode

$

Hi,

I have a Kindle 4NT. I had it jailbroken and working with ssh over USB Network but had to undo all that. Now I'm trying to re-do it, and I'm running into various problems.

The current state is that it's at firmware 4.1.3, and I've reset to factory defaults. It boots normally, connects to a PC as a USB drive, but I can not get it to boot into USB Download mode (hold power button until LED turns off, press five-way, release power, release five-way). It just boots normally or, if it's plugged into a PC, as a USB drive. This means that MfgTool doesn't see it and KUBRICK doesn't see it.

This isn't the first time I've tried to re-do everything. Last time, I was able to jailbreak it and install USB Network. It showed up as a RNDIS network on my PC but I couldn't ssh in - the connection was refused (pings succeeded, so I know the Kindle was talking over the RNDIS). I was thinking that the problem might be that WiFi was on (FW 4.1.3 has Airplane Mode, but doesn't have a separate way to turn off WiFi, and I wasn't sure whether Airplane Mode was sufficient for USB Network to work) so I wanted to downgrade the firmware to get the WiFi Off menu item back.

More complications: I had installed Kite earlier, and it looks as if it's still there. If I delete ondrop and onboot directories and reboot, the directories are re-created. Basically, I'd like to get this Kindle back to it's factory state.

Can someone offer some advice? Why won't it go into USB download mode? Is there another reason SSH might not have worked?

Thank you,
Bob

I copy javase embedded to kindle root file system, after reboot,it couldn't go into the graphic user interface, and what a too terrible thing is that I reset kindle to factory,so I lost the /mnt/us/usbnet folder,it make me couldn't control my kindle anyway......Now I need the /mnt/us/usbnet folder, then I will be able to attempt to start usbnetwork and repair my kindle,Is there anybody can share that folder with me? My kindle is kindle 3 keyboard with wifi, thanks for all.

K4 Is it possible to vertically restrict the display?

I have a Kindle 4 whose lower 1/3 of the display is broken and displays only garbage. The device is fully functional otherwise.

To still use it for reading I would like to restrict the number of displayed lines of text. Is that possible? Does anybody have experience with doing that?

I only found advice on how to use preferences to manage left and right margins.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all, this is regarding K4NT.

Is there any hack to remap the Next page buttons to the Right arrow key on the 5 way controller, and the same for the Previous page buttons to the Left arrow key?

PW3 Problem with Connecting to Wifi without internet acess [SOLVED]

$

Hello,

I'm Trying to make a portable computer with a kindle as a screen using a ssh-session.

My current problem is that the kindle wont connect to a wifi without internet connection.

the business logic around internet checking is inside Kindle's /etc/upstart/wifid.conf - this file content should probably mention some URL the wifid daemon is using to check if internet is working

then it should possible to tell my wifi routing software to actually catch the Kindle's request to the URL and respond with expected message to the Kindle.

Have anybody tried anything like this?

I'm not sure if it is important, but i use the Kindle Paperwhite (2015)

sincerely,
Mr0riiz

PW-3, FW-5.6.1.1, WiFi and OTA updates

Note that these findings **might** apply to only the combination mentioned in the title.

Although they are what are expected for any 5.6.x firmware. ;)

Note: This Kindle is not (yet) registered with my Amazon account.
I.E: Leaving your Kindle un-registered will NOT protect you from OTA updates.

I can't connect via WiFi to my local network without a connection to the Internet

Connect Kindle to PC with USB cable -
At the top of the USB mass storage file system tree (where the 'documents' folder is at) -
Enter the file named:
WIFI_NO_NET_PROBE
All capitals, no extension, no contents.
Be certain if using an O.S. on your PC that hides well known extensions that the file **really, really** does not have an extension!

Now your Kindle can connect to your local network even when your local network does not have a connection to the Internet.

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=199951
- - - -
Blocking OTA updates

Ok - next, enable connection to the Internet from your local network.
Note: You must eject from mass storage mode so the Kindle has access to the USB storage area.

Watch lights blink for awhile (there will be some bursts while the Kindle connects to Amazon and transfers your recent logs) -
Then after the communication lights have held steady for awhile -
Disrupt things by switching into airplane mode.

Note, you may have to tap the 'sync and check for new items' settings option to trigger things.
Note, there is a re-try counter on the OTA updater so it doesn't get hung in a failing download loop - so you have to capture this information on the first try (of the day).

Reconnect the USB cable and discover (attachment 1).

A PW-3 on 5.6.1.1 is really hungry for a copy of 5.6.5 ;)

Delete the partially downloaded update file and create a directory of the same name.
See attachment 2.

Eject the Kindle storage, remove the USB cable, allow it to access the network again for a short while.
Then:
home -> search -> ;dm
(the semi-colon is part of the command: "dump messages")

**NOW** re-connect the USB cable so you can access user storage again.
In the system logs (which you just created) you will find things like this:
Code:

Kindle 4 NT (Non-Touch) stuck at loading screen after jailbreak and factory reset.

$

Hi everyone, :)

This is my first post and thread on this forum ( Yay ! ), so please be kind to me. I really needed help.

So I had just accumulated enough courage to jailbreak my Kindle 4 NT that my cousin gave me a while ago (after said cousin broke the e-ink but I got a spare off e-bay for cheap then replace the screen ). I did it using this link : http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle4NTHacking

Although that it worked perfectly, I decided to wipe it using kindle's reset menu since I don't want my cousin's book to be on there ( an action which I would then soon regret) after it is jailbroken. It all went south from there.

My newly repaired kindle is now stuck at loading screen.

It has a weird symptoms as follows

1. The computer would detect the kindle when it is connected via usb cable and mount ( This is on a Windows PC) while showing the stuck loading screen

2. I can also make it go to diagnostic mode by creating ENABLE_DIAG blank file on kindle drive from 1 or using magic down key and power button with MfgTool.

3. The usbnet thing worked and I was able to SSH into it, including flashing the image onto the kindle. But it had no effect ( no error on dd)

Here are the things that I had tried so far.

- 1. draining battery and charge it up again (to no avail) :smack:

- 2. tried using kubrick CD to restore it. Got nothing either
( It has finished its task, but after rebooting it still stuck at loading screen )

- 3. I also tried using MfgTool + down key power sequence to enter diagnostic mode then setup usbnet and SSHed into the kindle. I then flashed the mmcblk0p.img (ver 4.0.0) using dd then reboot to no avail. ( per information on http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=169645)

-4. I also remove everything in /var/local but still no effect.

Can anyone help me on this matter, I really don't want to buy a new kindle since I just spent money fixing the e-ink screen.

Thank you in advance
Mo:thanks:

PW3 Use kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N.zip on Paperwhite 3

$

Hello Everybuddy,

I used these forum a lot in the last years but these is my first post.

I managed to Jailbreak the PW3 with these Tutorial:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=263113

Everything worked nicely and I am happy.

I have Several Problems so far. The Main problem is that any .bin file gets removed by the Kindle after placing it at the root system. I can not chose "Update Kindle" because after reconnection the USB the .bin file is gone.

For Example I would like to install the USBNet from here:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=186645

But the .bin file gets always removed.

I want to install the USBnet because i want to use these Manual to remove the adds: REDACTED. I could do these by the Serial connection. But then I need to open the Kindle again and i am not sure how often the glue sticks properly.

My other Problem is that i would use the coolreader inside of the KUAL.
KUAL is working and also the HELPER file from KUAL is working.
But i do not manage to get vlasovsoft running from here:
http://wiki.vlasovsoft.net/doku.php?id=en:pbchess-1.2.6#amazon_kindle
I copied the files exactly how it says in the file:
  1. vlasovsoft folder into flash root
  2. Copy the extensions folder into flash root

But nothing works the Kindle goes back to the main screen when I tap "vlasovsoft" in the KUAL program.

I think there is a general Problem with the Kindle Paperwhite 3 and the Jailbreak which I used because to many thinks seem not to work properly.

I would be very happy if i can have some feedback what i could do to fix some of the issues.

Kind regards Alex

Hi guys,
Tried searching for my problem but seems like I am the only one facing this problem.

I have a kindle pw2
The firmware is 5.6.1.0.2

I m unable to reset the device. Whenever I reset it. It goes back into some old setting .

The process is like
1. Reset kindle (used all possible methods). Tried deregisteration as well. No fun
2. Device reboots.
3. All books are on device. Forgotten wi fi
4. Shows device registered in my name (without me even entering any details)
5. I enter wi fi password, the device is now de registered, but all books still on my device. Even if I delete books one by one (or from pc), the books keep reappearing.
6. Registered the device to a different Amazon account. All the books are still on the device.
7. New side loaded books are removed automatically.
8. If I restart(not reset) the device the device reverts back to point 3.
9. The firmware update is showing greyed out.
10. Tried manual update but the device keeps deleting the update (5.6.5).

So friends, help me by either pointing to some new method. I can open the device but I need help my be in form of some video or step by step guide.

Hope I have made your weekend worthwhile. 😜😜😜

I have not been able to identify this part.
Tried both visible light and strong UV light.

Did check a few semi-conductor catalogs for a six pin device with D- and D+ run to those pins, without any luck.
Which just means that I couldn't find it, not that it isn't in someones catalog.

What I did not check was application notes from Freescale.
They might have something with recommended parts to use on the OTG port.

K3 Alternate Jailbreak method -> 5-way controller broken

Hello,

My 5-way controller is broken, and I want to reassign keys in order to keep using my K3w.

The Jailbrake method i've found requires the 5-way keys in order to select the "Update Kindle" option.

Is there an alternate way (auto-update, through terminal, etc) to jailbreak the Kindle? Basically, my "enter" key is broken and I can't do anything useful with the keyboard besides navigating on the main screen ://///

To be honest - this was my presumption as well. I dont know which discussions are going on in the background - take your time, figure it out. Hopefully. :)

You all missed another important discussion here already - perhaps, because you are looking so intently at the "service" part - when you are discussing what this community provides -

That amazon now controls

- the format (proprietary nature of kfx (format))
- the distribution (only Amazon can distribute kfx)
and
- production (only Amazon can produce kfx)

really warrants a discussion, that did not take place in here at all. In Germany we have media science professors at the largest political/industry/media summits of the year talking about the new concept of "the industrialisation of distribution formats" - where all cultural aspects are stripped away from what we in the past called media (in this case an eBook).

This hasnt been the topic of discussion on the international level at all.

This is me saying - think about the issues, take your time - but eventually, be productive - because, our societies need this group of people.

WiFi freeze on K3 4.3.2

On occasion I run into a "WiFi freeze" on my K3 where when I go into settings and select the WiFi settings the selection shades but never shows the networks available. After a while the shading goes away and I never see the networks available.

The only way I have found to deal with this situation is to use the LaunchPad [Shitft][Shift]R shortcut to restart the K3, which of course takes several minutes before I can again use the K3.

I have myts installed and can access a terminal window on the K3. Is there a terminal window command I can issue that could correct this without need for the restart?

Choff links broken

First off, thank you for all the very helpful posts on this forum!
I own a Kindle 4 and am looking to port a piece of software and I will need OTG support.

Looking through the posts on mobileread I find a bunch of references to http://www.christian-hoff.com/ who seems to have done a bunch of work on the K4

eg:
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/arc.../t-226516.html
Spoiler:
These are the kindle 4 notes. Which I am working through now...

http://www.christian-hoff.com/?p=16 Back up Kindle 4 kernel and extract initramfs

http://www.christian-hoff.com/?p=44 Compiling Kindle 4 kernel

http://www.christian-hoff.com/?p=139 USB Host on the Kindle 4

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/arc.../t-187802.html
Spoiler:
I then proceeded to follow Choff's K4 instructions (http://www.christian-hoff.com/?p=44). I'll take some liberties with the order of things because I ran into plenty of dead ends and had to backtrack. Of course that's on me, not Choff. Anyway, the first thing needed was a copy of the initramfs. I extracted this myself using Choff's instructions but it looks like knc1 determined it is GPL'd and, as such, has posted it here (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...9&postcount=29).

These links however are down. The page is still there (git as well) but no access to the posts.

Does anyone know if this is temporary? Where else might I find good writups on compiling and enabling OTG support?

many thanks
Jesse
