KUAL works on Voyage?

$

Hello guyz! Pardon my, most probably silly question, but I am a real newbie to Kindles. The idea is I have just purchased a Kindle Voyage (is on the way) and I read that Voyages had no more support for Active Content. This is indeed very sad because I believe it is wonderful to be able to play chess on this device. So I badly need chess. I have just found out about the KUAL, which allows to run, say, pbchess! But I still cannot understand, can KUAL be installed on Kindle Voyage, or it can't? Could anybody please nlighten me on the matter? And if it cannot, perhaps there is some other way to run chess on Voyage?
Thank you guyz!

K4 Strange eips behaviour

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here, but I've used the forum extensively so thank you for providing such a great resource!

I have a jailbroken Kindle 4 NT with USBNet installed. Everything works as expected except for one thing I can't figure out. I haven't been able to find the same problem on these forums.

I am using the Kindle to display 8bit PNG images at regular intervals using eips. To display an image I do:

Code:

eips -g image.png
The problem is that some images display correctly while others, for lack of a better word, get kind of 'skewed'/distorted. Even the Kindle's default screensaver images.

I've attached two images, one that works and one that doesn't. Attached is also pictures of how they look on the Kindle.

I hope someone has an idea why this happens. Thanks in advance!

K5 Router + USB keyboard Kindle input

Has anyone done this? I've just started searching a bit on this and found a few breadcrumbs, no clear answers.

I have an old Belkin router with a USB port running OpenWRT and am able to add other modules. I have a USB keyboard to plug in to the router. I would like to forward keyboard input from the router to the Kindle (Touch) over wifi.

The router and the Kindle can talk over ssh (both can be either client or server).

Whats the easiest or best way to forward the keystrokes to the Kindle? Ideally into ANY window where the on-screen window is up?

Thanks for any thoughts on this!

edit: I found this as a possible solution: http://superuser.com/questions/67659...d-over-network

Whispernet fails to deliver Amazon ebooks on Kindle Touch (K5)

Hi. With the help of this brilliant forum I recently applied a jailbreak to my Kindle Touch and installed Collection Manager successfully. Since then, Amazon does not seem to deliver any purchases. They appear in the 'Pending Deliveries' but are not delivered when I connect the Touch to WiFi.

The Touch is definitely connected to the network OK - the router confirms this. I have switched WiFi off and back on and tried syncing repeatedly. The Kindle is registered correctly and everything else seems OK. I am reasonably certain that I downloaded at least one book via Whispernet before jailbreaking my Kindle Touch.

It looks as if the jailbreak has broken the Whispernet connection, but I may well be missing something.

Can anyone help, either to get Whispernet working or with a workaround? Just so you know, this is my first attempt at jailbreaking my Kindle - it's the first time I have used it since buying it second-hand and I reset it back to factory settings first.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers, Stephen

PW2 - Changing collection thumbnails in Cover view

As the title says, I am wondering if there's any way to change the default image displayed for a collection? It'd be great to have a photo of the author for example as the thumbnail for the collection of that authors books.

Hardware Kindle as a Heads Up Display

$

Ah, another idea that I may run out of time to complete.
But I will throw it out here along with what information I have to date.

- - - - -

I have always been interested in having a "heads up display" in my car - I thought it could be useful (for ???).

Recently I replaced my 30+ year old ride with a more modern (8 year old) version.
Gone are many of the mechanical things, now taken place by computerized controls.
(By some, non-authoritative sources, at least 27 embedded computer systems in this model (HCL) car. Hacker City Ltd.)
All of them networked (in fact, three (3) networks of different speed).

Wheee .....
Something to display (I only had to wait a generation or two. :D ).

First thing first - can I use a Kindle e-ink (reflective) display?

This part is easy to try out - buy a commercial piece of "1/2 silvered" mirror -
Place Kindle horizontal -
Place mirror at 45 degree angle -
Look through it.

Duh, even with my lack of hobby time, I should be able to find time to do that. (famous last words).

There are a few known problems lurking in this idea -

In the simplest physical configuration, the Kindle and mirror would have to sit on top of the dashboard.
Perhaps the hottest possible place in a car to place an electronic device - I expect the Kindle to cook (perhaps even melt) when mid-summer arrives here.

So ok, I will only put it in place when the interior of the car is cool enough for the Kindle to survive. ;)

So for my first test of this bright idea -

Can the Kindle reflective display be seen clearly enough during the day (being lit only by ambient light through the windshield) ?

Can the Kindle's front lighted models produce a visible display during hours of darkness ?

- - - - -

I ordered a 5x7 inch sheet of beam splitting glass to find out.
(At about $1 per square inch - ouch)

Website link is mentioned in the tech. document attached below.
Yes - they ship internationally.

Restrict PW Internet-Access with Router-Whitelist

Hello mobileread-community!

I recently bought a Kindle PW. Unfortunately i have e few ebooks in my sortiment, from whose existence i don't want Amazon to know.:D
Secondly i don't want that Amazon collects data about my reading habits (except my buyings on their website).

I have a WLAN-router (Fritz!Box7320) with the feature to allow access only to certain website like wikipedia.org/ (whitelist) OR to block certain websites e.g. amazon.com/ (blacklist) for a given device respective MAC-adress.

If my whitelist contains only the entry
wikipedia.org/
is it for the PW 100% impossible to establish a connection to amzon.com OR to exchange data via WLAN?

Answers are very welcome!:)

How the wikipedia-feature works in detail (PW)?

Hello community,

for security purposes i want to allow the kindle PW only to establish a minimum of internet connections.
During reading the PW offers three tabs, if you click on a certain word: dictionary, x-ray and wikipedia.
Which ip-addresses (or other ports) should remain unblocked so that the wikipedia-feature is still working properly?

Kind regards

K5 PW1 fastboot flashing problem

Hi. I'm an old user here in mobileread.com, but this is my first post.

When I try to flash a system image (~350MB) with fastboot, it takes like 20 seconds. It looks too fast for me, and I think that it just flash a few MBs.

Just to be sure about this behavior, I have edited with an hex editor the last 64 bytes of the system image with some strings, to flash the image and then check from a terminal in the PW1 using the command 'strings /dev/mmcblk0p1 | grep "string here" ' if the string is there. Well, it wasn't there.

I'm wondering if anyone has succeeded trying to flash a complete system image using fastboot.

Thanks to all who has contributed to know the secrets of this eink devices :)

KV Kindle Voyage Serial Jailbreak - Where are the instructions?!

$

I don't want to sound like a n00b (well electronics yes) as I'm far from that, but I have been pulling my hair out on how to find the instructions for the serial jailbreak for the Kindle Voyage. I have tried searching/prefixing and nothing except THIS thread which to me just shows 3 copper wires soldered to the 3 serial pins and that's it. I have come across speak in some other threads where people mention the serial jailbreak but they don't give anymore information than that! It appears this jailbreak is elusive and only known by a select secret few lol

I would really appreciate someone pointing me to somewhere with some plain English easy to follow instructions for this hack. I would have thought this would have been made a sticky somewhere but I'm obviously not finding it!

Kindle Keyboard 2 wont update

Hi Fellow Readers.

I have had a kindle Keyboard 2 B002A(sprint ) version for quiet a while now .

I am facing a few obstacles in updating the firmware for the same .
Currently I am at the version 2.0.4 which i believe is the base version it came with.

I am now outside the US and want to update the same to the latest version 2.5.8 so I can use the wireless while traveling .

have tried downloading the firmware to my pc , then connect the kindle over USB and transfer the .bin file into the kindle removable drive root folder.
But once i eject the kindle safely and go to Menu>Settings the Update Your Kindle option is greyed out and never accessible.

Also once I connect the kindle back to the PC , in the removable drive the .bin file has disappeared.

I request anyones help who may have successfully solved the same.

I did a bit of reading on the forums and realised that (correct me if I am wrong) I cannot go directly from 2.0.4 to 2.5.8 ? IS it so?

IS there any other intermediary firmware versions which I need to update to before 2.5.8 ?

Cannot install JBPatch

I have kindle PW2.
It has firmware 5.3.2

I have Jailbroken it.

Till now I have done this much as stated:

3) Protecting Yourself From OTA Updates

a) Plug your Kindle into a computer, and create a folder in the root (the base level of the kindle in USB mode) with the name [userstore]/update.bin.tmp.partial/

b) Install KUAL, the Kindle Unified Application Launcher. This is necessary for most of what you can install with a jailbreak.

c) Once you have ensured KUAL is working correctly (if it isn't, try step 2.5), install Backdoorlock according to the "Installing using KUAL" section. Then, open KUAL, press Back Door Lock, and then press Lock the back door.

4) Preparing for the Future

a) Install the K5 Rescue Pack according to the instructions included in the README.txt inside the zip.

b) Install the MobileRead Package Installer. This will ensure that if you are updated to 5.6.1- on purpose or on accident- you will still be able to install things.

When I am putting the JBPatch install bin the root directory, the update kindle is greyed out.

K3 ssh over USBnetwork disconnects after 30 seconds

I've got a K3W, and installed the USBnetwork tool. I followed the instructions, and I'm able to ssh to my kindle. For a short time.

The problem is that after less than a minute, the connection stops responding to ping requests. Performing ifconfig usb0 down and then ifconfig usb0 192.168.2.2 brings the connection back up for another 45 seconds. Disabling the firewall with ufw disable had no effect.

I read the README_FIRST.txt file and saw the reference to killing netwatchd (though the comment is only for outgoing connections) I used top to see what was running on the kindle, and didn't see netwatchd running.

I've searched over this forum and found someone who tried nmap for network debugging. If I run nmap while I can ping, it shows ports 22 and 23 open for ssh and telnet respectively. But then once ping starts timing out, nmap -Pn shows port 554 open for rtsp and 7070 open for realserver. I'm thinking this is just an artifact, but thought I'd provide all the information I have.

I'm running Lubuntu 14.04 LTS and kindle firmware 3.4.1.

Anyone have any ideas?

PW2 Can Amazon control Kual?

What does this bit of nonsense mean?
Quote:

This Device is not authorized as a test Kindle by the developer of this item. Please contact the developer
After I jailbroke my PW2 and synced it with my Amazon account. The second time I went to browse the bookstore something like this appeared I didn't pay much attention at the time but when I tried to open Kual this message appeared, anybody had a similar experience?
My kindle shipped with FW5.6.0.1 but I downgraded to 5.4.5.1 does that have anything to do with it?

Koreader (CoolReader) GLIBC_2.11 error in Kindle 3

$

Hi all,

I got the Koreader (Lua bit) working on my Kindle 3 (keyboard). But when trying load file an ePub into reader (libkoreader-cre) it fails with GLIBC_2.11 dependency.

Here is the application log when I ssh and run:

root@kindle koreader# ./reader.lua -d /mnt/us/documents/book.epub
# initializing for device Kindle3
# show reader ui
# show widget
Warning: Could not load rt.so, falling back to gettimeofday.
# opening file /mnt/us/documents/book.epub
# cannot open document /mnt/us/documents/book.epub error loading module 'libs/libkoreader-cre' from file './libs/libkoreader-cre.so':
/lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by /mnt/us/koreader/./libs/libcrengine.so)

Looking at the library with readelf, I can use some longjmp methods from GLIBC 2.11:

$ readelf -Ws koreader-arm-linux-gnueabi/koreader/libs/libcrengine.so | grep GLIBC_2.11
14: 00000000 0 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT UND __longjmp_chk@GLIBC_2.11 (7)

I tried to compile with static linking against glibc (-static-libgcc) but that one didn't help too.

Tried with 4.8 on Ubuntu 12.04 and Mint 17.1 (= Ubuntu 14.04 trusty)

Source is compiled with undefined FORTIFY and _GNU_SOURCE

Any help highly welcomed.
