K5 Use KuBrick to install 5.0.0 in Kindle Touch?

To make a long story short: Kubrick worked to restore my Kindle Touch back to 5.1.2, many thanks to ixtab!

Now I'd really like to go back to 5.0.0, the version that shipped on my kindle. I've downloaded diagnostic images, which are gzipped .img files. (Specifically, kt_5.0.0-mmcblk0p1-main.img.gz and
kt_5.0.0-kernel_main.gz).

My thought is: the Kubrick LiveCD has all the tools and scripts needed for flashing already in place. Is there a way for me to point Kubrick at these images and tell it to put the older version on the Kindle? Or a way to use it to simplify some of the steps of reflashing?

My Kindle/Amazon Nightmare

Hi,

I have a bit of a problem with my kindle its a sad story so dont`t read any further if you are easily upset lol.

I bought a Kindle PW2 for my mother`s Christmas present and placed a few(3000) mobi books on it before I gave it to her, all was fine it was working normally put it in the box and wrapped it up..

Christmas day came and as I gave my mother the gift and said here`s a library for you I thought that would be it, but in reality it was heres a big headache for me I should have bought a voucher.

So I tried switching it on as I knew the last time it had over half battery and the kindle battery life lasts forever but no it wouldnt switch on, so I charged it for a couple of hours and tried switching it on when I got "your kindle needs repair pleace contact amazon.com"..

Great so I do a bit of researching and and hold the button down hoping a simple reset would do the trick but no..

So I give amazon a call who were very helpfull at running up my phone bill and eventually offered to send a replacement Great, so I hand over the serial number and address in Ireland( Thats where my mom lives) and upload my CC details so as the can charge for the postage..

A day later they get back to me saying the warranty and kindle model was from Japan and I needed to contact them to get a replacement :/

Bought online from from a website based in Hong Kong sent to Australia

So I decided to do this one through the chat as I was already down $20 from the last phone call same story except they wouldn't ship the Kindle outside Japan, but suggested I send to a friend in Japan and they could send to me(no luck there).. I was glad I used the chat at this stage as this kindle would be getting rather expensive lol

So I contact the online store where I bought it and they suggest I pay to ship it to them and back $60 and they will fix it, I tried asking them to contact amazon and get a replacement but they said they need to see it to validate the warranty, bummer since I opened it to disconnect the battery to see if it would reset it which probably voids that ..

So if your still here, this is where you guys come in, I have read extensively and unbricking and the K5 rescue pack and jailbreaking kindles...

Ive tried everything in the 2 second window amazon have allowed me try try and rectify the problem(absolute joke worst operating system ever) with obvious no avail

The problem I seem to be having is

1) My kindle was never jail broken so the K5 rescue pack wont install
2) I cant jail break my kindle as it is bricked
3) My operating system in Windows 8.1
4) Amazon are cunts lol and the kindle operating system is stone age when it comes to repairs

so any suggestions, as this is my last hope before I let the kindle get the better of me..

K5 ConcurrentHashMap

Hi,
In an earlier post [http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...eventlistener] I outlined that I ma using a nmea library in my kindle PW.

After fixing the build issues in the earlier post, I discovered that the kindle doesnt like:

For the logger fix I shamelessly used ixtabs logger class.
however for the ConcurrentHashMap I am not sure what to use instead and was hoping for some advice here.

The project builds fine but the kindlet gets stuck/ freezes at this method.

KV Kindle Voyage Jailbreak

Hi there fellow mobilereaders,

I've been off here for ages, only checking back to update reading my list due to extremely busy university schedule. I'm thinking of upgrading from my PW1 to a Kindle Voyage. Is there any way to jailbreak it, or downgrade the FW so that I can get CM and JBPatch to work? These utilities are kind of a deal breaker for me, and if I can't get these on a KV then I may go with a PW2.

Native Draw on Pdf

I would like to draw shapes and write notes on Pdf Reader of Kindle Paperwhite. Have you got any idea to create such a native tool?I think it isn't so hard.Here is my solution:
  • Write a native app that is similar to "/usr/bin/xtestlab126".But It won't clear background when it opens.
  • Listen a specific gesture event of touch screen.After that event, run this drawing app.Note: we should run this drawing app anytime.

Can we put a "nop" bytecode to disable clearing background.Instead of writing new app, we can edit bytecodes of xtestlab126.

Kindle IOS app - the internal browser plays video but no sound

I hope this is the right forum, and I apologize if it's not. Given the discussions I see here, this should be an easy one for you folks.

I created an ebook with links to videos embedded in my website and hosted on Vimeo (my Pro account). I click on the link in the ebook on the Kindle app on my iPad, and it opens up the video in the Kindle app's internal browser. I press play, and it plays... but no sound.

These are videos hosted on Vimeo, so I created a test page with other Vimeo videos and Youtube videos. Same thing: all of them played, but no sound. I tried it on another ios device (my iPhone) with the same result.

I then airplayed the original video from my iPhone to my Apple TV and everything worked fine, including the sound.

Any ideas? The videos are encoded normally - audio is AAC 48 kHz.

I'm mystified and would appreciate any expertise you can offer!

KV Screensavers - the Amazon story

I prefer reading on the Voyage to my previous PW but am irritated (again) that I cannot have pictures of my grandkids as screensavers.

So i wrote to Jeff Bezos (and a couple of other Amazon CEOs - not including the CEO of Kindle who is the only one not to publish an email address!) with my frustration and asked why the end user cannot upload screensaver pictures.

I did not get a written response but did get a phone call from an 'Executive Assistant' - we had a pleasant chat...

He explained that Amazon's reason for not allowing user screensavers is related to the cheaper ad-based versions of the various Kindles. I gave him a potted CV (50 years in computing) and told him that maintaining the ad-display facility alongside user screensavers was a trivial software issue and sounded like an excuse rather than a reason (he didn't argue with that).

I do appreciate that Amazon wants to retain control over the display of ads for those who have the cheaper version but keeping that alongside user screensaver images cannot be beyond the capability of Amazon developers (can it??).

I have a different theory: I think that someone senior in the development team sees it as a personal challenge to defeat the hackers and show that he (or she) is better...

I shared this theory with the EA - he chose not to discuss it with me but noted my point that not allowing user screensavers goes against all of the good stuff Amazon totes about its customer service just about everywhere (and its customer service, with this one exception, is in my experience very good indeed).

We also discussed the use of jailbreaking on earlier models and it was clear he had never seen a Kindle with other than Amazon screensavers.

I was finally assured that the issue of user screensavers was well know to Amazon and was under constant review. Despite the friendliness of the telephone conversation I was left feeling that I will have to put up with the Amazon screensavers for some time...

Shame on you, Amazon!

apt-get on kindle?

Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to get apt-get or similar on a Kindle. Contrary to what I read on this blog, I cannot use apt-get. I would love to get a text editor like Nano to use from the shell, and some other useful packages.

I have a Kindle 3G, firmware version 3.4.1.

PW2 Poor battery life

I have jail broken my PW2 and now the battery life seems to be very poor. Without using the Kindle, the battery drains in about a week, so it doesn't seem to be properly sleeping.

I have installed the following:

Hello, i'm a newbie to kindle and just jailbreaked my PW2, and followed the wonderful sticky thread to install all the thingy it needs.

question: should I stay using fw 5.4.3 or I should update to any other newer recommended fw ? or the newest one ?

How to jailbreak 5.6.1.0.4 for screensaver

This forum help me to get screensaver last time for kindle 4. Thanks you for that.

Today I got my new kindle paperwhite 2 that have 5.6.1.0.4. Actually it's come with 5.4 something but I updated it. Later people tell me that it's can't be downgraded (something).

I don't want to do anything except Screensaver so I can put my own images. Do someone know how I can put screensaver on it.

I tried to run kual but it's told me "This test kindle is not authorized". something I search and come back to this forum.

Do someone know how I can get screensaver on it.

From Kobo to Kindle: sleep & display question

Hallo,
forgive me when I did not all find myself yet. but as the kindle-world seem A LOT bigger than Kobo - I am lost :-(

I used the Kobo to show data of my homeautomation on an hourly basis.
in between I am using rtcwake to sleep the reader to save battery. the kobo runs for >1 month with a single charge.

As the kobo is not on sale anymore, I think about the 6" wifi e-ink kindle with some questions.

- does it have a working rtcwake command with standard sh-console?
- can I fully disable the kindle-frontend to only show a simple png/picture

my process now is:
  1. boot kobo
  2. kill stock frontend
  3. load picture from local NAS
  4. sleep kobo for 3600s
  5. after wakeup proceed with 3.)

HELP unbrick Kindle Paperwhite 1 - NO USB

I was given an old Kindle paperwhite 1st gen with 3G, in which the screen was stuck to the boy reading under the tree.

Charged the battery for a very long period of time (24h) on the wall charger with the led on amber and tried powering it on with it connection to the pc running linux.

With constant monitoring of the logs it was obvious that no storage device was found.

I eventually dissasembled the device and soldered the pinouts for the usb and was able to get the boot message. with kernel checksum errors.

Got into uboot->bist
run fastboot on the kpw1

Got the system images from http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/...pw520_wlan+3g/ (Thanks by the way) and ran the fastboot commands from the pc.

extracted the files then ran

fastboot flash kernel main_kernel.img.gz

after rebooting i was able to get the diag menu.

Exporting USB storage now shows up the Kindle storage. I copy over the extracted pw_3g_5.2.0-mmcblk0p1.img.gz then drop to the login prompt.

I Cannot get root access...
Copied the serial number to the Amazon Kindle root password site https://www.sven.de/kindle/ (Also thanks for providing the service) but the resulting passwords do not work.

So, I can't dd the mmcblk0p1.img without root access.

Following the instruction here https://gist.github.com/TobiasWooldr...ca75190b9a473f which recomends

modifying the mmcblk0p2.img diags partition and editing a upstart script for automatically dd the file does not and the fastboot flashing the file to the diags partition does not work.

Would really appreciate some pointer....

PW2 Garbled code in 5.6.1.0.4 jailbreak(serial port)

Hello everyone, i just began to jailbreak my KPW2 (Japanese version, fw5.6.1.0.4) with serial port. But all codes garbled when i restarted the device, and all input didn't work when "Hit any key to stop autoboot" shown up.
I've tried following setting in XShell 5:
115200 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bits, no parity, no flow control
115000 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bits, no parity, no flow control
115000 bps, 8 data bits, 2 stop bits, no parity, no flow control
But all of them failed.
Terminal encoding is Unicode(UTF-8).
What should i do?

Need to know Kindle Keyboard supported greyscale values.

Hello everyone,

First off, I had also posted this question in the kindle main forum, however seeing as how you're developers and the content you create will have to display properly on the Kindle you probably know the answer so I'm also asking it here.

My question is, which color values exactly does the kindle keyboard support?

I bought a kindle keyboard wifi on ebay, and decided I want to put custom screensavers on it. I spent the past few days creating many photos, all 600x800, all greyscale, and all with as much contrast as I'm comfortable with. Today my kindle arrived and I immediately installed the jailbreak and screensaver hack. Now that I've got my custom images on the kindle I see a huge problem.
I had followed these two tutorials here to create the images:

Those two tutorials both used the same color palette for dithering, however when I used the same palette on my images they didn't display correctly at all on my kindle. So does anyone know the exact colors of the kindle keyboard's palette?

Cool Reader and kerning

Recently I installed the newest Cool Reader for my Kindle 3 from CrazyCoder's Github. It's working fine, but I can't get kerning to work. The checkbox in the options menu does nothing.

I checked the desktop version on my Linux PC and there I can't even find a kerning checkbox. Kerning doesn't work here either.

And yes, I've tried with fonts that have kerning information. When I try FBReader on my Linux PC the kerning with the same fonts looks fine. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a working download for FBReader for Kindle 3.

Am I missing something or does Cool Reader not support kerning? Any other way to get decent kerning on my Kindle 3 or any other more recent e-ink device (I might upgrade if I got better font handling)?

PW2 Use current screen as screensaver?

If I jailbreak a Paperwhite without Special Offer, is there any way to use current screen as the screensaver when I sleep the device? That is, keeping current screen, and not changing the screen to a picture.

The built-in pictures of the screensaver are quite awful; I especially dislike pictures of crammed pens or pencils like this http://www.ink-pens.com/post/1107500...amazons-kindle. Perhaps I have a different sense of beauty from that of the Kindle engineers, but I really do not see how those kind of pictures are pleasing to eyes.

KT2 Un-Demo Kindle

Hello All

This is my first time here, and i read a lot before asking this, but im no sure 100% if the KT2 (Kindle Basic with touch, only power button) can be un-demo?

I read about paperwhite, and k3, k4 and k5, and know that k5 reference to kindle touch.

I start to check with ixtab's debricking tools collection for Windows, and noob pdf. And when i try to do the instruction to get usb download mode the device restart.

Upgrading non-Japanese 4GB PW2

I have a non-Japanese 4GB PW2 version 5.4.3.2, and from what I've read on the forum posts, this model is unable to run Collection Manager due to the active content changes done in the framework, unless I upgrade it to 5.4.5

So I installed Jailbreak 1.14 and fake-registered it with update_reginfo_0.08 to use the native collections for now. My questions are:

1) I know that the JB 1.14 survives an update to 5.4.5, but does that hold true even for this pesky 4GB model, fake-registered?

2) Should I ever need to downgrade it back to 5.4.3.2, will I be able to do that through the umount-and-poweroff trick?
