PW2 Victim of 5.6.1 stealth upgrade

$

I had already installed the backdoor lock, but then I went from 5.4.5.1 to 5.4.3.2 and back to 5.4.5.1, and I guess the backdoor lock didn't survive those changes. (I thought the downgrade might help with an issue I was having, but it turned out to be totally unnecessary, so I brought this on myself.)

Posting for two reasons: First, in this thread, there was some interest in identifying the OTA update file, and I can tell you exactly which one it was. The name of the file is update-2547700002-fwo.bin, and I've put it in my Dropbox just in case it could be helpful to any of the developers.

(The reason I have it is that after I downgraded and reupgraded to 5.4.5.1, I was fiddling around with KOReader and such, and I noticed the file on the Kindle and wasn't sure where it had come from. I copied it to my computer so I could look into it later and deleted it from the Kindle. You'd think that would have clued me in to the backdoor lock no longer being effective, but no.)

And then the second thing is... At that point (this is still before the 5.6.1 upgrade happened), I did think to install the rescue pack. So when I realized the 5.6.1 upgrade had happened, I had hope that I might be able to boot into diags and downgrade that way. But I've tried creating the ENABLE_DIAGS file and rebooting, and it doesn't boot into diags. So I guess the rescue pack didn't survive the stealth upgrade? Is there anything else I should try before giving up? Thanks for any help you can give me!

(Oh, and in case it's helpful to know this, I had installed the backdoor lock update bundle from here. And the jailbreak is the most recent version.)

KT2 USBNetwork Problem

Hi everyone,

by searching the forum, I found no fitting Thread ...

I did my first woobly steps here: How-to jailbreak FW 5.6.1 by serial (step by step)

now I have installed JB 5.4, KUAL(v2.5)+Helper, MRPI and USBNetwork 0.18 N.

But I have trouble with the USBNetwork...
everytime I want to connect with my Kindle the connection is refused...

I am using a Kubuntu USB-Stick System and my knowlege in Linux-Systems is quite limited...
so i cannot say what the problem is...

on one hand it seems to be a systemrelated problem, because all installs on the kindle are running (verified over serial)...
on the other hand as dmesg shows, the install on the pc is also working....
but I have problems to set an IP-address for usb0 and the IP-address vanishes after a while or trying to establish a connection to the kindle...

can anyone help?

K3 Displaying text in a regular and automated way

$

Hey guys,

I haven't used my kindle in quite a while and I'd like to put it to good use. I'm embarking on a project that's that's inspired by the Kindle Weather Station:

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=200621
http://mpetroff.net/2012/09/kindle-weather-display/

My goal: convert my Kindle 3 Wifi into a display that regularly downloads a text file from a server, parses it, and then displays it in a pleasant way. This'll be used as a To Do list viewer.

The only issue I have left to figure out is how to display using custom fonts and what not. If I use the SVG method outlined in the links above, I'll have issues with text wrapping because SVG doesn't handle that well. I've played around with the `eips` command but that outputs the text in a FUGLY way.

Is there any way to get text to display well, word wrapping and all, on the Kindle?

Thanks

K3 Duokan 2014 fixed its music player problem

Hey there, I may come a little late to know about it, but I've found there was an underannounced update for K3 back on September, it fixes the music playback feature to work almost perfectly (couldn't found how to make it display the ID3 data my mp3's had)

It has to be installed manually as the previous install (R4.13) is unable to update to the newest version.

It can be found on: http://www.miui.com/thread-1991341-1-1.html

Hope it turns out useful for old users like me out there. :)

Kindle Touch: font size issue

$

I waited months before posting about this issue because it seems weird to me and I thought it was just my fantasy... anyway, it seems that my Kindle Touch default 4th font size has changed.
At beginning (v4 firmware) it was my font size of choice, than during the years something happened. It's because some firmware upgrade it'sor because jailbreaking or patching?
I'm on 5.3.2.1 now, with jbpatch installed and it doesn't make difference if I enable or disable the font size patch.

This bug seems like this one (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=1046) and it seems like I'm looking for size 10. But it's not just like I want an uncommon size and I cannot get it: I'm pretty sure I was able to use it in the past.

I had some confirmation some days ago when I had the chance to take some pictures to the new Kindle 7 gen touch. In the attached picture you can see the font size difference. On both reader I selected the 4th font size. Please look just at the font size and don't use this picture to compare other details since the Kindle 7 gen touch picture it's out of focus, I used a phone camera in uneven light conditions (my Kindle touch looked great side by side to the new basic Kindle, with a better contrast but not so much as it seems in the picture).

I would like to know I there is some way to get my font size of choice back. Maybe it's a font size issue related to 5.3.2.1 version and in newer firmware versions this issue is solved? Upgrading would be an hard choice since jbpatch hypenation and margins hack are too useful to me and jbpatch is not supported on newer firmware version.

Thanks for your help.

UPDATE: sorry, it wanted to post this message in the "Kindle Developer's Corner" subforum since it seems more appropriate to me but it made a mistake and now it seems I cannot delete this message after posting it. Any moderator can help?

K3 K3 running v3.4 jailbreak help?

$

I thought I'd experiment with my old Kindle 3 and try jailbreaking it, but does the jailbreak work for the last firmware, version 3.4? Looking at the "Font, ScreenSaver & USBNetwork Hacks for Kindle 2.x, 3.x & 4.x" thread that contains the info/files for jailbreaking, it talks about versions 3.0 up to 3.3 and has the relevant files for those, but nothing about 3.4. And I found an unanswered post in this forum from someone who had asked about the jailbreak failing on his 3.4 Kindle?

Kindle PW1 project

Hello Kindlers,

I just bought a used PW1, unfortunately the firmware is on 5.6.x, so I think I have to use the serial port to root and jailbreak it. In my pursuit of doing that, I opened up the PW1, and found that it's pretty empty inside. While I was trying to figure out how exactly to solder in a serial connection, I grabbed some parts from my stockpile of old android phones, and put this together:

Picture attached to post as a file

It's the Kindle PW1 in the background, replaced the stock kindle 3.7V 1420mAh battery with a Samsung SCH-i515 Galaxy Nexus 3.7V 1850 mAh battery with an integrated wireless charging circuit, and put in the motherboard and camera from an old Motorola MB810 Droid. To my amazement, it all fit within length and width dimensions of the Kindle PW1. There are still a few accessories from the Droid left to place in the arrangement, and I have to work out the wiring on the battery and charging circuit(s), maybe I'll have to add an additional battery, and just keep them separate, but there's plenty of space for all of that. If I mill down the metal structure in the Kindle, then the kindle will get a little thicker, but it will still be thinner than some of my 7in tablets, and it will have a battery life time longer than any of them, and more capabilities than a stock Kindle after I'm done jailbreaking it, and hooking it to the android via VNC. :2thumbsup

I think I just found my ultimate travel companion....

Edit: I may have posted a little too soon, I first need to verify if the droid will run without the screen.

Can I use EventListener? [PW]

$

Hi,
I am developing a kindlet to read network NMEA data and display it. Seems simple enuf [at least thats what I though]

I have a PW and its jailbroken and kindlet broken and running the backend of kual thannks to the great post and guide by Rick. I managed to make a socket connection from the kindle to a tcp service over usbnet [what an accomplishment for me - although it shouldnt really be]

Ok, so I am using a java library called marine-api that is a NMEA transcoder library. This works well in a Java app. But when run on the kindle it gives me an error popup that the kindlet cannot be started. I am new to this, so I am working blind [no debug or info] and troubleshooting line by line with an upload to the kindle on every change [this is painfull]

So I narrowed it down to a class in the NMEA library called SentenceListener which extends java.util.EventListener. My kindlet instantiates a class called TcpClient which extends SentenceListener which extends EventListener. If I dont extend EventListener the kindlet load and works fine [except that the "wiring" of the NMEA lib is now broken]

I see that the KDK uses KMenuListener and KMenuEvent. Could these be in conflict with the NMEA ones or "crosstalking": my NMEA events being sent to the KMenuListener

Thanks in advance
Jason
:offtopic:Is there a way to configure a build file in eclipse to make jar, sign jar and upload to kindle? Currently I am using a script to do the signing and uploading which requires the password to be entered everytime. OUCH!

Downgrading PW 5.6.1 WITH Jailbreak

I jailbroke my kindle a while ago, and can't remember if I installed BackdoorLock.
Regardless, my kindle recently updated to 5.6.1. I have already used the hot fix to fix=/update the jailbreak already installed, however I would like to re-downgrade to 5.4.0 to retain the collections sorting feature.

I know it is not possible to downgrade if you have not already jailbroken, but if I have is it possible?

Can't do jailbreak update

Hi,

I have an Amazon Kindle 3G, version 3.4.1. I found NiLuLe's jailbreak hack list, and I put it on my Kindle, no problem. I also put the USB network hack and font hack on, all worked perfectly well.

Then, I messed something up and panicked, and did a factory reset. Right now, my Kindle works, and I can read books and stuff, but it rejects all update hacks. The Kindle loads the update a bit, then says "The update failed. Your Kindle is restarting" or something of the likes. There is no error code. I tried again, and the same thing happened.

I'm doing the exact same thing, but now the updates are failing. I would love some help to get the hacks working again.

TL;DR: I did the hacks, and they worked. Then I did a factory reset, and the hacks do not work anymore.

Thanks for the help!

PW2 How to invoke native reader from file browser?

$

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible to invoke Kindle native reader from some kind of file browser/explorer.

KUAL has Explorer extension. Coolreader has a built-in file browser. KOreader has a filemanager.

Coolreader/KOreader work great for me to traverse my file structure to locate and read my ePubs.

However, for some books I need native Kindle reader to use Amazon dictionaries and Vocabulary Builder. Unfortunately, with a large number of books, using built-in book list is very inconvenient. (I know about various methods of organizing collections, etc., but still prefer my own file structure that I can easily sync between devices.)

I tried KUAL explorer extension, but it did not seem to invoke any readers.

Is there some feature/extension/native package that I overlooked?

Thanks!

K3 Version 3.4.1 (2540470001) cannot install launchpad

I just obtained a replacement K3 WiFi for one that was stolen and am in the process of customizing it. I believe Amazon installed an update today while I was in the process, as I believe the version showed as 3.4.0 when I started earlier today.

I was able to install jailbreak 0.11.N and ss-0.42.N successfully, but when I attempted to install lpad-pkg-001c I find that the "Update Your Kindle" is greyed out. Given this, I tried a restart of the kindle, which gave me an "UPDATE ERROR: 3" and I had to hit "R" to resume reboot after the message.

Is this a known problem or a new issue? What do I do at this point?

Tutorial Downgrading

Hi everyone.

I just got my Kindle so I'm a noob, and I needed these days to look for a way to downgrade its FW. I may have not looked properly, but I'm not new on the Internet and know how to look for something, and the informations seem to be buried here and there. I eventually found the answer, but I feel like this forum lacks a thread with clear instructions/links, hence this one. I hope it will be useful! Otherwise feel free to delete it ;)

Where to download .bin packages: on [Link to copyright material deleted] (from 5.4.2 to 5.4.5.1).

How to downgrade: check this post by dsmid.

renew, out!

Kite update hack not recognized by Kindle :(

I have the jailbreak, USBnet, and font hacks on my K3G. When I put the Kite update_*_.bin hack on the Kindle and checked for updates, it said none were available. Then, to test, I put a copy of the fonts hack bin file on the Kindle. It recognized the file and gave me the option to do an update using it.

KT2 WiFi - can't connect - 'need more scatter'

Hi,

I have a rooted, jailbroken KT2 with FW 5.6.1.0.2
and active debug-interface

In my homenetwork kindle connects properly with wlan.
Now I tried it in another network and the kindle will not connect properly.
We tried a lot diffrent networks and settings, but with no success.

In the Wlan-menu always the message appears:
'Network-Error' [*standard-trouble-blabla -> contact support* ]

But over the debug-interface i got this:

Code:

[root@kindle /etc]# ifconfig wlan0
wlan0    Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr A0:02:DC:71:03:C4
          inet addr:172.16.10.115  Bcast:172.16.15.255  Mask:255.255.248.0

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:315701 (308.3 KiB)  TX bytes:11136 (10.8 KiB)

additionally
I can ping from the kindle to other members in the network
Code:

[root@kindle /etc]# ping 172.16.10.65
PING 172.16.10.65 (172.16.10.65): 56 data bytes

64 bytes from 172.16.10.65: seq=3 ttl=128 time=31.411 ms

but i can't ping the kindle from another devices

after deactivating flightmode, i get this message:
Code:

[root@kindle /etc]# info hardware:no_wan::WiFi only device. No WAN found

by consulting google it seems to be a driver/firmware-problem with the i.mx6 ...

Online I found nothing helpful...
I think its not advisable to contact the amazon-support direct with an 'hacked' kindle,
so can anyone else help?

Is there a real RSS client for jailbroken Kindle?

$

I do not mean those which require a special web service or a USB computer connection. I mean those real RSS clients you normally see on a PC or on an Android tablet.

I have read the "Where to start" page, and it had "Web to Kindle" section, but there were too many items that I did not figure out which ones were real RSS clients.

There are two ways to turn pages.
  1. Swipe left/right
  2. Tap the screen other than the top area

I only want to use [1], because [2] is fired too often by accident. Is this possible for jailbroken Kindle?
