Kindle Keyboard has different screen

$

I have several Kindle Keyboard which I was given broken over the years. I've never had trouble replacing screens until now. I have one that will not take any of the standard screens I've installed. The standard screen is fine for text, not for images. This Kindle has a different serial number than my others:
B006 D0B1 1343 0CQ3. I do remember reading somewhere that there were actually 2 screens made for 2 different Kindle Keyboards.

I can only find screen ED060SC7(LF) C1, which won't work in this Kindle. Does anyone know any resources for there? PowebookMedic no longer has any, and Ebay only seems to have the one model.

I have ordered another motherboard to at least make use of the screens I have!

Sudoku for Kindle - Local Web App [aur0raHAX] [No Jailbreak]

After someone inquired in a thread about whether or not it was possible to install a Sudoku app on a non jailbroken Kindle, I was inspired to create an online, Kindle themed Sudoku app. This app only worked when connected to the internet, so I didn't consider it "installed."

Recently, I discovered aur0raHAX, or more importantly, I realized it was possible to open locally stored HTML in the Kindle browser. With this, I realized it was possible to run locally stored content, similar to the "Active-content" games, via the Kindle web browser.

To install Sudoku for Kindle with aur0raHAX, extract the attached sudoku.zip, and copy the sudoku.html and sudoku.js files into the "Apps" folder inside your aur0raHAX installation. Run it by opening aur0raHAX and clicking on sudoku.html.

To install Sudoku for Kindle without aur0raHAX, extract the attached sudoku.zip, and copy the sudoku folder to the root of your Kindle drive. Run it by entering "file:///mnt/us/sudoku/sudoku.html" in your Kindle web browser. You can bookmark this page, and open it without internet.

This was tested to work on my Kindle Voyage, running firmware version 5.9.6.1, I cannot ensure that it will work on any future firmware versions, or any other devices.

Kindle weather+domotic display : need a second page/image activated with touch

Hi!
Great forum here, it was really useful to me to develop my own Weather display.
It display data from a french weather website, temp graph, and also temperature of my home gotten from my domotic system.
It's based on Mathew petroff project

Here is a snapshot in case anyone is interested

The hard heavy part I all coded in python (that I know well) , it modifies in the end a SVG file, that is converted in png.

The kindle "only" downloads the png via a cronjob (see code at the end of the post) from my local server, every couple of minutes, displays it using eips command. Kindle commands I know almost nihil.

Bash, linux, I am ok with it, but not a champion!

I've seen Kual, but I am thinking I need only a small part of it, or even there is a much easier solution.

Now for the questions.
  1. 1) Anybody knows an easy way to use touchscreen to implement a simple action (toggle eips and display a second .png with other informations)
  2. 2) other commands that I could use to:
    - lower / increment background visibility of kindle
    - restart framework /re-enable sleep
I would like to launch them in the cronjob, if a given file is found (or not) on the server. This would leave the "intelligence" on my server!

Here's kindle code I used from Mathew petroff project

Code:

stop framework  #as name suggests

lipc-set-prop -i com.lab126.powerd preventScreenSaver 1  #disables screensaver /sleep
lipc-set-prop com.lab126.pillow disableEnablePillow disable

wget http://IP/weather-script-output.png  #gets the image from servr
eips -f -g weather-script-output.png  #displays it

All help would be really appreciated

PW4 question about HALT and boot

$

I usually shutdown my devices using HALT extension in KUAL if the device will not be used for a while.

All of my older devices shutdown with a screen "Please wait while your Kindle starts" (or something similar). Then pressing the power button causes the Kindle to boot. This has worked on K2, K4NT, Touch and PW2.

On my PW4, the shutdown is the same, but the power button does not make the Kindle boot. The light momentarily goes green, and then nothing happens!

I tried multiple times, short press, long press - no result. The only way to boot is a very long press that causes a reboot.

Can anyone confirm how HALT and boot work on PW4? Can you describe what happens and how long does take after the power button press, please?

@ilovejedd, you seem to have a few devices in various stages of use and rest?

Thanks!

anyway to jail break new oasis (2019)?

I think after using koreader, I couldn't go back to reading thru the regular kindle app.

Not that I *need* it but I'm wondering will the new oasis be jail-break-able?

Or we don't really know till some devs get their hands on it?

K4 I cant update it

I have this kindle that I have given my daughter with version 4.1.0 and I wanted to update it but I do not get the option in gray in the menu. It is not registered either and when I try to link it to your account it tells me that it cannot access the network but it is connected via Wi-Fi. What can I do?
Thanks

PW4 Will I lose Amazon support if I Jailbreak my Kindle?

$

So, I'm with a Kindle with factory firmware jailbreakable, but I didn't do it because I'm doing some processes at Amazon and I was afraid I would lose its support. But now they're asking for me to update my Kindle, so I thought of jailbreaking it, then updating it and send the logs to them, but for sure they'll notice it. If so, Amazon will block me or something like that?

PW3 Get jailbreak back after reset?

$

Hey Guys,

a few years ago I bought the Kindle PW3 and the first step was jailbreaking it.

I had no problems and everything was working fine.
After a lot of time not using the Kindle today I loaded and started it.
I noticed, that the Kindle upgraded to the Firmware 5.10.2 by itself.
I also recognized, that KUAL was not accesible anymore.

Then I made a huge mistake: I reseted the Kindle via the settings without knowing, that a downgrade from my Firmware is not possible.

Afterwards I tried to reinstall the Jailbreak again, which did not work.
The Kindle deletes the files by itself.

Is there any way to get the Jailbreak back to my device?

What is really interesting:
In the past I installed some custom screensavers.
Those are still (after the reset) working.
I remember, that I had to put the files in a folder named "screensavers" but this folder does not exist anymore after the reset.

Maybe the reset did not delete the Jailbreak?

I hope you can help me :)

Greetings

PW3 Can't install factory firmware PW3 5.8.9.2

Hey all, I'm trying to jailbreak my PW3 (G090G1) on firmware 5.8.9.2, but when I try to install the factory firmware 5.9.6.1 I get an error that states that the update failed, and it gives me an error code of 16 at the bottom of the screen. It didn't brick the device and I just had to press the power button to get it to come back on, but it was still on 5.8.9.2. I'm thinking I should install a newer customer firmware and try again, but I figured I'd ask here first. Any ideas?

Weird square blurb on restart...(latest paperwhite)

Hi guys. Dunno if this is normal, or if I did something...

I turn of my kindle at night, and when I turn it on next day there seems to be a small square advert or something top left corner-ish.

Is this normal, or me...??

Thanks.

What is the "framework" process?

Hi guys,

Since my update to fw 5.12.1 some days ago I noticed that the battery drain of my PW4 increased dramatically. From a 2-3 weeks of work, to 3-4 days or so.
So I launched top on my kterm... it turns out the cpu is going full speed!!!

In particular, it's the framework process that is taking 80% of cpu time.
Hence the question in subject.

Anyone can contribute?

Thanks!

PW3 Need help for debricking

$

Hello,
After reading a lot of instructions and thread and dealing with some technical problems I stuck at some point and I really need a pro advice.

I bought this kindle from ebay as bricked thinking it would be an easy fix. Apparently I was wrong. The seller claimed it is not used for a long time and it didn't work after 4 hours charging. When I get it realized factory refurbished.

So, When I get it,
- I tried, 2 days charging with a wall charger and resetting by holding 20 and 40 seconds
- Opened it, it was very clean there isn't any sign of amateur work.
- tested battery, it is ok.
- made a serial connection, here is my first screen,
Code:

I have navigated to usb export and kindle window popup my screen.
- I downloaded latest firmware from amazon and copied to kindle. After reboot it is installed successfully but the nothing was changed except that I have screen lights now.
- I tried factory firmware with some way but it refuses to install.

Now my only option is fastboot I think. But I cannot connect fastboot to device in windows10 due to the lack of a proper driver. USB linux is pain in the ass because of the UEFI and my computer's recovery which interferes many distros I have tried.

I need some good advice to go on...

Possible to root the Fire Stick, possibly through hardware?

I apologize if this has been discussed already on this forum somewhere.

I want to root my Fire Stick. It updated itself to 5.7.0. But I would happily break it open and root it from hardware if that were possible.

Is there a guide or any information about how to root this device?

I jailbroke my PW3 years ago. It's on 5.8.5.0.2. Will connecting it to the internet to download books from the store cause it to OTA update and break the jailbreak? Is there something I can do to prevent that if that is the case? Thanks.

Online chess, backgammon, go, scrabble etc?

Is there any software that allows you to play online board games against other people via the kindle paperwhite? I just would like to pick which game I'm playing then see the board and a little info like how long I have to move, opponent ranking etc. It would be brilliant if I could try a few moves for either side. No need for the kindle to be able to play the games. Brilliant if the software could simply switch between different games so I could seamlessly go from chess to scrabble etc.

Am I missing something? The JB was successful, using ;installHtml.
the upgrade button is grayed out, so I'm unable to install the hotfix .bin file
Do I just go ahead and update to a regular firmware now? then do K5 hotfix?

PW3 Can run full blown Chromium browser on up-to-date Alpine Linux

Hi,

so for a long time I was intrigued by the Linux capabilities of the Kindles. I got a Paperwhite 3 some time ago when it was on sale on a prime day, but as you know Debian Wheezy was the only distro old enough to run on that ancient kernel (through chroot + Xephyr for graphics). No newer kernel due to proprietary difficulties with epaper display, thus that's it.

But even getting just a proper browser seemed impossible. Text based works okay, albeit without pictures obviosly, and also without javascript sadly. The preinstalled one can't do tabs, scrolling is a nightmare as is the zoom and sizing of elements. And the skipstone build is ancient and doesn't cut it.

So have a look at this: https://imgur.com/gallery/uX1DENC

All packages are up-to-date (version "edge" including repository "testing" to get some of the new stuff like onboard keyboard). Chromium works just fine, including javascript and everything. I even simply installed uBlock origin and an extension for a simple new-tab-page, as well as the black & white theme.

I started with the Mini Root Filesystem for armhf from here: https://alpinelinux.org/downloads/ But it seems you can also bootstrap it like this
Code:

./sbin/apk.static -X ${mirror}/latest-stable/main -U --allow-untrusted --root ${chroot_dir} --initdb add alpine-base
(https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/In...ux_in_a_chroot)

I really lost hope anything like this would be possible with the Kindles, but now I'm happy again :D

So have fun with that, when I have more time I'll probably write a guide on how to get a sensible setup going. Basically its the same as with Debian, just that you have another package manager and way more possibilities and up-to-date software
