KV Help restoring diags_kernel and partition

Hello fellow hacklers!

I'm reaching to you in despair after sort of bricking my 2 day old Kindle Voyage. :help:

After successfully rooting through serial method (fw5.9.2.0.1) I didn't manage to get the JB going and so decided to downgrade and formatted the eMMC to start fresh :chinscratch:. I was unaware that parts of the OS were only written once in-factory (diags_kernel/partition).

After reading pretty much every thread on this forum regarding the subject I managed to restore (and downgrade 5.9.2.0.1 -> 5.5.0) both the kernel and rootfs (using KindleTool + google's official standalone adb/fastboot OSX package + factory 5.5.0 image)

I managed to find diags_kernel/partition dumps for other kindle versions on https://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/ (and actually tried to load them) but unamazingly didn’t work as "bootm 0xE41000" does not find a kernel.

Could someone with a KV please image and share diags_kernel and diags partition?
It can easily be done using the instructions in the forum:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...03#post3569803

Any help would be appreciated!

Unbricked PW3 successfully, now I don't have diags

Howdy,

This starts when I was trying to downgrade my Paperwhite 3 (Non JB- FW 5.8.9.0.1 from factory, upgraded to FW 5.9.2.0.1 via Kindle update) via the serial port.

In this process I erased MMC0 by mistake and naturally ended up with a hard bricked kindle.

In the shining light of this I figured out how to successfully unbrick and downgrade my firmware, and now have a functioning Kindle again at FW 5.8.2.

Now my issue is that I cannot get in to diags, it seems that even though I've successfully flashed the firmware, I think I am missing the DIAGs partition.

Trying to bootm 0xE4100 doesn,t work, giving an error that uboot can't get kernal image, and chucking the ENABLE_DIAGS on the root of the /mnt/us directory and rebooting just boots normally.

I have tried flashing multiple firmware versions, as well as flashing an older firmware, then updating to a newer one, and while they all work, none of them seem to re-write the diag partition.

I'm kind of stuck here, a nod in the right direction would be apreciated

I have a white PW3 G090KB with firmware 5.9.2 which is jailbreaked.

At the moment KUAL, python and librarian sync are working and when usb is connected it boots into diag mode.

Is it possible to downgrade it to a former version as it's already jb'ed?

I made the horrible mistake of leaving my wifi on overnight and the Kindle updated. Again.

And now the KUAL won't load. Again.

Is this the future of Kindle? Is every update from here on in gonna screw up the KUAL? Is there gonna be ever adding KUAL icons tbat do nothing?

How do I fix it this time? I'm a writer, not a programmer.

All I want is my ePubs. Why is that too much to ask? I am really beginning to regret not getting a kobo.

downgrade from 5.8.11

First when I've tried to downgrade from 5.8.11 to 5.7.4 It was successful. Later, I've upgraded to 5.8.11 and I thought jb has been disappeared because I could not access usb net anymore so I've tried to downgrade to 5.7.4 again, but I cannot. The update file immediately disappear after usb disconnected.

questions about jailbreaking for kindle 3 3g+wifi

hi, i recently dug out a kindle 3 3g+wifi from my old study (turns out i already have an ebook reader! :2thumbsup), and my friend suggested that i do a jailbreak.

the truth is that i'm not really sure about what the jailbreak is or what i'm supposed to expect, and my friend's kindle is a lot newer than mine :help:

here's what i've already did:
1) i found this thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=88004 and copy-pasted update_jailbreak_0.5.1_k3g_install.bin into my kindle (which was working with a 3.2.1 system) and updated it
2) it restarted and i didn't get any notice of whether it's free so i decided to update it with amazon's .bin files to 3.4.2
3) after updating, i did no.1 again and got the same result

so my question is
1. how am i supposed to know whether my device is free?
2. why doesn't my screensaver change after i updated it with Update_ss_0.47.N_k3g_install.bin?
3. after i've broken free, is it possible to change the homescreen book list into grids showing the book covers?
4. can i install KUAL: Kindle Unified Application Launcher in my device? or is the version of my device too old?
:thanks::thanks:

PW3 Removing a book/software from the title list

Hello, I know that from the thread title the subject is not very clear.

The thing is, I recently upgraded my PW3 firmware, and the Kual "document" doesn't work any longer. I therefore have removed the corresponding file KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw from the "Documents" folder in my kindle.

Unfortunately, it still appears in my kindle among other books and documents, despite the fact that the file is no longer available on the device.

How can I get rid of this???
It seems the list reads from a cache or something like that, and doesn't get updated...

Invert landscape view on paperwhite 2

My daughter ordered a new case for her paperwhite 2. The case is designed to support itself upright so you can read it in landscape view. However due to the case setting, the text is upside down. Of course I thought she could just pop out the kindle and turn it around within the case, but due to the top and bottom being different to accommodate the power button and charging area, she can't do that. Is there a hack, or a way to invert the landscape mode??

KT3 and active content

Is it possible to have active content - specifically any reasonable chess game
on KT3 ?. If so I'll consider jailbraking it to the desired firmware.

longer story

I got KT3 for my son. I decided to go with KT3 because from the past I remembered that that Kindle possible to jail brake and have best community support. Apparently I was not aware how much Amazon became anti consumer monster

I would consider to jailbrake it if will support active content and some board games - most importantly chess

Side question. Is there any possibility to add Hebrew and Polish language - just for the purpose of searching in pdf documents.

Ps.
I am PC technician with over 20 years of experience. but I am basically green with e- readers.
What surprised me that Amazon in the case of Kindle became very much owner of the of the the devices it sold to customers and decides for them what and how they will use it. As for today it looks as it has the same or worse patronizing approach that Microsoft has in PC market.
BTW as I got my unit with Special Offers I was amazed that while I was requesting the removal of (as I live overseas) it with the Amazon representative via Chat support. He/She was able to do it - ie turn off it without any my involvement.
Basically when the network is connected the Amazon has always full control over your Kindle. Sometimes is convenient but generally it is very scary and not healthy situation. It is like windows computer would come with preinstalled Team Viewer can you can not turn of and only MS has the access to it.

Thanks a lot everybody who is a part mobileread and tries to make e-readers more sensible .

I just updated my jailbroken PW3 to 5.9.4 without any issue using https://s3.amazonaws.com/firmwaredow...hite_5.9.4.bin
previously running Firmware Version: Kindle 5.9.2.0.1 (3262860017)
now on Firmware Version: Kindle 5.9.4 (3278740046)

Then reinstalled my mrpackages (python, screen savers hack etc.) via
Code:

;log mrpi
using newest Snapshots of NiLuJe's hacks from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030 (nov, 27 2017 atm)

Screensavers in cover mode work fine, tested on a new book too.

Kindle Paperwhite 3 (fw 5.9.2.0.1) Jailbreaking Questions

$

Have lurked around a lot and hopefully this post will get down to the straight answer for me and others like me without having to do a lot of forum scrubbing.

I have a Kindle PW3 (G090G1) with firmware version 5.9.2.0.1
From what I've been able to find on these forums is that there is No Way to software downgrade from firmware 5.9.2.0.1, or anything 5.8.8 and above, right now.
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/5_x_Jailbreak

It is possible for anyone like me with any model Kindle on any firmware 5.8.8 and above (outside of the Oasis model) to use the Serial Port jailbreak method to force a firmware downgrade.
(This is also possible for anyone with a touchscreen model in the 5.x.y fw)
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=267541
this requires skills and tools for soldering, taking apart the kindle, and installing a VM of Linux on my pc. As possible as it is, it's something I'd rather not do if I didn't have to.

Please correct me if any of the information i posted above was incorrect, but my questions regarding my situation are this:

1) Is it worth waiting for a software downgrade and jailbreak path to release for fw 5.9.2.0.1?
2) How possible is it that a software jailbreak path for this fw is going to be released any time soon?
3) Should I just give in, bite the bullet, and go for the serial port method in lieu of a possible software jailbreak for this fw not appearing soon?

Tools People who have updated software, and now KUAL gives blank screen.

Hello all.

I am looking for a test subject.

If you have updated your kindle, and re-isntalled KUAL Booklet, but you are just getting a blank screen, I would like you to try this and report back.

put this jar file on the root of your USB drive.

make a file named 'RUNME.sh' on the root of your USB drive with this contents ( name needs that capitalization ) -- Make sure there are no windows newlines in the file either
Code:

#!/bin/sh
# mount system
mntroot rw
# remove bad kualbooklet jar
rm "/opt/amazon/ebook/booklet/KUALBooklet.jar"
# install my test jar
cp "/mnt/us/KUALBooklet.jar"  "/opt/amazon/ebook/booklet/KUALBooklet.jar"
mntroot ro

then search for ';log runme'

then restart your kindle, and then try to open KUAL Booklet.

( If you have usbnet installed, instead of restarting kindle, you can kill 'cvm' to reload java classes )

Where could I find Kindle Voyage 5.5.0 firmware?

KV Bricked Kindle Voyage "Repair Needed"

$

It is going to be a long post, kindly bear with me.

The Specs:
Device: Kindle Voyage (Bought in 2014 November)
Firmware: The one before the latest 5.9.4 (5.9.3? or 5.9.2.0.1)
USB Cable: Came with JBL portable speakers
Wall Charger: ①Apple Adapter ②OnePlus 3 Dash Adapter
PC: Windows 10 64bit

Some Introductory Words:
I am a frequent user of my Kindle, reading an average of about 20 books per year. I charge it as per no particular rule, plugging it in whenever the battery level drops to half or below. I usually charge it to 80-100%.
I haven't used Linux and I don't dabble in the lingo like the wizards over here do. I have only used fastboot to the extent of rooting my phone (using idiot-proof instructions, still with much difficulty). However, I am willing to learn :)
I would like to avoid prying my Kindle open at all costs.

How it happened:
1. After using it heavily one day, I got the "Battery Level Critical" warning as an 'OK dialog box'.
2. I kept using it since I was out at the time and the battery icon still showed about 5-10% battery.
3. Upon reaching home, I plugged it in only to notice that the orange LED was flashing. That's odd, I mused.
4. I thought that a simple restart shall fix the thingy. That's when the dreadful "Repair Needed" screen reared its ugly head. (See the attachment)
5. I thought another restart might do the trick. And it did! At least then.
6. First thing I did was to copy all the files from the USB storage on to my PC. (I didn't know about the advanced backup method then.)
7. Then I charged it to 100% overnight.
8. I used it normally for a couple of days.
9. Yet when I plugged it in again, the LED was flashing. I restarted it, only to have bricked my Kindle.

Troubleshooting I've done yet:
1. Now when I plug it in (PC/wall), the LED either flashes or doesn't light up at all.
2. When plugged into the PC, it used to show a removable drive (transparent icon), which when clicked showed the error "Please insert a disc into the USB drive F:/".
3. When I restarted whilst connected to PC, I was hoping to see USB storage for a while during the screen flashing stage, but I didn't. It just disappeared and reappeared again, with the accompanying ting. The flashing of the LED stops, and resumes when I disconnect and reconnect the Kindle.
4. Then I came across posts that mentioned fastboot etc. and that I needed libusb drivers for it to work. So I downloaded "Zadig - The Automated Driver Installer (Version 2.3 [Build 701])". I proceeded to replace the driver with this tool, only to have my Kindle not show up at all in "This PC" or "Disk Management". However, it does show up in the "Device Manager".
5. Now I don't really know how to use fastboot, but still, I tried the fastboot.exe; and it just says "<waiting for device>". I guess this is because my Kindle is not in the recovery mode.
6. I also tried using the "KindleSelectBoot" or "MfgTool.exe". All of the four ABCD sections are greyed out, and I can't do anything with it. Plus, when I go to Options>Configuration>USB Ports, the tool crashes.
7. I came across "RUNME.sh", "data.tar.gz" etc. but have no idea how to use them.

I have a hunch that the 5.9.4 update has something to do with this calamity.
Also, I think there's no problem with the Kindle battery, but just the software (maybe kernel level)

Any help would be highly appreciated! _/\_

PW2 Updating Kindle with Jailbreak

$

Hi, I'm sorry if this question has been asked before. I tried the search but nothing came up that could help me.

I have a PW2 on 5.4.3.2

I have KUAL and Koreader installed, but reading through all the threads I can not make sense out of it. Can I update my Kindle without losing the jailbreak?

If so, how?
And up to which system version?

Thank you

KT2 After jailbreak questions

My goal is to be able to sideload my book collection, which is in different formats, to my KT2 and be able to read them from it.

I have been following https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/5_x...#Step-by-Step: though I think I messed up somewhere on step 9, as KUAL although displayed in My items, it would not open. I then tried installing MRPI and Koreader, but I think I have reversed all of this now.

I have left my firmware version at 5.6.0 after jailbreaking, as I was unsure if there was any reason to not upgrade or not - please let me know if I should.

The top level of Kindle storage is currently the following:

Code:

drwxr-xr-x 11 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 17 13:33 .
drwxr-xr-x 11 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 17 13:33 ..
drwxr-xr-x  3 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 16 23:32 .active-content-data
drwxr-xr-x  4 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 16 23:27 .active_content_sandbox
-rw-r--r--  1 firstname firstname 41565 Nov 27 18:39 ChangeLog.txt
drwxr-xr-x  2 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 16 22:27 .demo
drwxr-xr-x  2 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 16 23:32 developer
drwxr-xr-x  6 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 17 13:14 documents
drwxr-xr-x  2 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 16 23:18 mkk
drwxr-xr-x  2 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 16 23:18 rp
drwxr-xr-x 13 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 17 13:28 system
drwxr-xr-x  2 firstname firstname  8192 Feb 16 19:18 update.bin.tmp.partial
-rw-r--r--  1 firstname firstname    38 Nov 27 18:39 VERSION

Starting step 9 over from now, I have unzipped kual-mrinstaller-1.6.N-r14394.tar.xz to the top level of my Kindle, and even though the MobileRead Package Installer thread does not mention inputting ;log mrpi to the search bar, as the Wiki page does input it but receive the error no MR packages found. I am guessing this is instruction on how to use it, when necessary.

In the next part of step 9, I go to KUAL: Kindle Unified Application Launcher (v2.7), and if I understand correctly learn I need to first install Mobileread Kindlet Kit before KUAL.

Looking through the files in kindle-mkk-20141129.zip, I do not seem any that indicate they are for KT2 or BASIC, so I am going to stop here, and ask which file should I use please? When I tried this before I used K5, and then then uninstall bin earlier today.
