Hoping to root. Any point to continuing to block updates for my PW2? (FW 5.8.11)

I was hoping that there would be a jail break for my Kindle... does it make sense to keep blocking updates?

Or should I just enable updates and move to 5.9.0.2 or whatever the latest version is?

Help - Debrick a Demo Kindle 8th Gen

Hi there,

Am 02xda2, joined this community today (was browsing since a few days)
Picked a Demo Kindle 8th Gen unit from grey market with an intention to convert it to normal and read many a posts on these forums about that.

Connected serial ports on the motherboard to a FTDI232 (used LDO 1117 for 1.8V)(did not connect the power point - saw a post without that on xodustech.com by one Mr. Travis Brown) and I could see the kindle thru Putty. So far so good…

I could not get to diags mode with ‘bootm 0xE41000’ though the device was rebooting promptly and stopping at Kindle System Login (a demo book running on the display) and while messing around got into Recovery mode and accidentally pressed ‘4’ (option 3 for mmc over usb was not working) which incidentally formatted the ‘mmc0’.

Tried to enter Recovery again, could not and tried to flash ‘update_KT3_5.8.0_initial.bin’ thru ‘bist - fastboot’ my win64 did not recognize the device and fastboot device never came up on system. (could not convert or extract the above firmware with 'kindletool' either)

And now Kindle boots but sits on ‘uboot’

Now need help to revive the kindle, please…. And this noob (am not a geek by any measure) now Calling on geekmaster, knc1, ixtab, NiLuJe, twobob and other champions from the corner…. Well there are too many !

:help: Please…

Native kBridge

The "bridge code", that part of the jail break infrastructure that re-installs our stuff after an Amazon update, has been a part of the touch screen jail break(s) and the "hotfix" packages.

Since it is now getting a major over-haul, it is getting its own, more descriptive, name: "kBridge".

The base portion of the kBridge has been sampled already (last month) by some our users.
That "base portion" checks and corrects as required, the basic parts of the installed jail break.
It is also responsible for on-screen progress messages.

The update-bridge portion that re-install the various packages the user has included is a collection of script fragments.
To make that possible in a reasonable length of time, they are all run concurrently (in parallel).

Each will write a progress message on the screen but the screen writer can only write one line at a time.

To manage the situation of multiple writers to a single display line writer, the scripts will use one of the inter-process message queue systems provided by the Linux kernel.

The speed-bump in this project is that it requires a command line interface to the inter-process message queue system that can be used from shell scripts.
Since I could not find a suitable utility, I had to write one myself.
(Which accounts for about 6 weeks of re-learning programming that I haven't used for decades.)

Since this new command line utility is a general purpose utility for inter-process communications, it has its own public repository:
https://github.com/knc1/mqueue-copy

Probably of interest to only a very few of our members, but that is where it is kept.

KT2 Attempted serial jailbreak but the diagnostic menu is different?!

I hooked up my KT2 using a USB serial and I can get to the uboot> prompt.
I enter 0xE41000, some text scrolls by and nothing happens after that.

So I started pressing buttons. Entering a ? gives the text output below.

Entering d, l, m, o just gives the same error.

I completed the serial jailbreak guide by unzipping
kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip

found inside of kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N-r14393.tar.xz

in my /mnt/us directory and then running ./jb.sh.

KUAL (incl. mrpackages, gawk binary, and kual+) and the latest nightly of koreader seem to be working fine.

I am still on firmware 5.8.9.2, and the used Special Offers, unregistered KT2 has been in airplane mode from the instant it arrived. I also created that update.blah.blah directory to try to prevent OTA, uh, attacks on my jailbreak.

I notice all this update stuff in kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N-r14393.tar.xz:
Code:

Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin
Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14.N_install.bin

Should I install these (using mrpackages), or are they already installed? How do I tell?

KT2 KUAL can't replace store button on KT2 and PW1

I noticed this KUAL button to replace the store button on both my jailbroken KT2 (Special Offers) 5.8.9.2 and PW1 (No Advertising) 5.6.1.1. So I pushed it and then restarted. No change. The little shopping cart is still up there at the top on both Kindles and prompts me to enable networking to connect to Amazon when I press it.

Is my firmware too new?

Tools OTA blocking

It looks like firmware 5.9.2 (and maybe earlier) can defeat our current means (a directory name) of blocking over-the-air updates.

As a temporary measure, keep the devices in 'airplane mode' to avoid updates.
This is specially critical for devices NOT YET running a firmware from the 5.9.x firmware series.
At least if you want to jail break the device, since we can not jail break any of the 5.9.x series firmwares.

If you want to know when a new blocking method is invented, just subscribe to this thread.
(And please, everybody else avoid posting a lot of 'noise' in this thread.)

PW3 Unbricking some kindles, advice welcome...

Hi

Bought a box of "defective" Kindles out of a whim... now I have 5 PW3s. I opened 4 of them, so I have the possibility to connect the serial console. (Working on a Debian system, with working fastboot connection, got that hurdle...)

No1 had a dead battery... replacing it brought it back to life but I suspect the charging circuit might be broken, have to test that.

No2 is starting up but then just showing the screensaver (no touch or anything). On the serial console I see U-boot starting up
Code:

...
Welcome to Kindle
...
info asr_setup:Not in asr mode::reason=flag file not present. shutting down asr_setup::
info hardware:no_wan::WiFi only device. No WAN found
info board_data_file :/opt/ar6k/target/AR6003/hw2.1.1/bin/AR6003_wfo_calfile.bin::
[  29.377434] ath6kl: ath6kl_fetch_board_file: Board calibration file fetched: /opt/ar6k/target/AR6003/hw2.1.1/bin/AR6003_wfo_calfile.bin
[  29.449979] ath6kl: MAC from kernel xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:C2
[  29.859981] ath6kl: host only supports scatter of :1 entries, need: 16
[  400.888536] pmic_soda_connects_notify_otg_out:423

and that's it... if I connect it to a Win PC I see a drive detected, but I cannot access it.

Any Ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it? I've read about DO_FACTORY_RESET file but I cannot access the drive...

No3 shows the same behavior as No2.

No4 displays a page of a book but does nothing more, no reaction to reset via power button (>20sec).

No5 has a whole in the screen and a bent motherboard... so no help there, but the batter was still alive.

Then I've a WP63GW with a strange looking image on the screen, serial console shows
Code:

[    1.741247] max77696-epd max77696-epd.0: EPDINT: Regulator Fault Detected [12]
[    1.748534] Regulator Fault Occurred! Retrying powerup...

Guess this on is fatal as well...

And I've a SY69JL with a kindle Power On picture and a D01100 with a drained battery on the screen, which I did not yet open up.

Would be thankful for some tips/hints, I'm fairly new to this kindle stuff :poke:

PW2 Help on SERIAL JB Hardware

$

Hello everyone! Greetings from Colombia!

I'm trying to JB my PW2 5.9.0.2.

I'm not a overly technical person (only know very basic electronics and coding), but I'm confident I can achieve the Serial Jailbreak following the posted instructions.

However, adquiring exactly the identical hardware described in some threads might be a challenge in my country (I usually have to wait months to get things shipped from overseas).

I have this hardware laying around and I'm wondering if it could do the trick.

Option 1:
- NTC CHIP SoC Board:
This one has UART and a 1.8v pin, but never used it as a UART "client" for other devices.

Option 2:
- Chinese PL2303TA USB-to-RS232
I bought this one to play around with an arduino board that I'm still waiting to arrive, so havent had the chance to use it, let alone know how to be certain it will communicate over 1.8v instead of 3.3v (in the spects it says its compatible with both voltages).
¿Could someone point out which would be a better fit?

On a side note, would the Serial method work on Firmware 5.9.0.2?

Thanks all for any help you can provide!

KT3 can not jailbreak

I'm absolutely a newer in this field,so i have to seek for help .:D
I recently get a Kindle 2,it is also known to be KT3. when i first connected wifi ,it soon began upgrading automatically, I agreed innocently.
Then disaster came! one day,i watched a pdf file in my kt3 but got a bad user experience.I started search for help.So jailbreak became my best choice.

but my firmware version is 5.9.2.0.1,is the latest version.I have tried every way.
1. downgrade:but kt3 does't recognize the special firmware at all.
when i use firmware fro amazon,it shows invalid updated file.
2. use jailbreak tool: in search bar ';installHtml' return nothing

I am thinking ,can i make a updated firmware, version is newer than 5.9.2.0.1,such as 5.9.3.0.1 which is actually 5.8.2 from amazon but not special. Then we may downgrade.but i don't know how to do.
please help me .Thank you!:offtopic:

KOA (1st Gen)

Just a simple question. New here. reading a lot on here.

I have a KOA that was Jailbroken on the factory dev image last year (2016). I recently updated it to 5.9.2.0.1 for the new functionality. All I really used was the screensaver hack. (why Amazon won't let us do this to start I'll never know ;) .

Using knc1's script I successfully returned a Public Key, so I assume I'm still Jailbroken?, I know I can't do much with it at the moment as nothing works for this firmware.

Am I in fact still Jailbroken? and is there any hope for my beloved screensaver hack in the future?

The device is now in Airplane mode, as knc1 noted the folder trick to prevent updates is no longer functional on this firmware.

Thanks all! ;)

Downgrade 5.9.2 Voyage

I absolutely screwed up when I was seeing how the Lending Library worked and left wi-fi on for long enough for update 5.9.2.0.1 to download and force-install itself. No amount of powering off my kindle or plugging it into my computer stopped the update or let me delete the update file, and I tried nonstop for over a half hour before I admitted defeat. I am absolutely furious with myself and am desperately hoping that someone knows if I can unscrew my kindle.

I've searched online and in this forum and tried the various downgrade firmware posts, but my kindle will either delete the bin files without saying anything (as in the case of v5.5) or will tell me that I have an invalid update (as in the case of 5.6.5 or the hotfix bins).

I DID have both the jailbreak and KUAL installed prior to this upgrade, but I have read confusing information on if that will make a difference in my situation. I didn't know until today that there was a new update to the jailbreak, so no, I'm sure that update wasn't installed since my files are dated 2016. When I try to open KUAL now, I get an application error. "The selected application could not be started. Please try again."

Please, if anyone knows a way for me to get my custom screen savers back instead of these ugly typeset ones, I will be tremendously grateful.
