4.1.3

There seems to be a Firmware Update for older Kindle (k4nt) devices. From the dates of the converted update file it's dated 9. July 2015. Contains lots of patches as it seems.

Has someone already tested the update? Does the jailbreak still work?

Kindle browser security issues

I have been following a thread on updating the firmware on older model kindles to 3.4.2 to improve security. As my K3 is already at that level I decided to check security with the howsmyssl.com web site mentioned there.

I was somewhat surprised by the output, which declared my SSL client BAD.
Further details were:

Version is improvable, as TLS 1.1 is being used instead of 1.2

Session Ticket Support is not supported and thus could be improved

The reason for the BAD call is that there are included Cipher Suites known to be insecure, specifically RC4 in three of them.

Is there anything we can do to remove the insecure cipher suites? I have not been using the K3 browser for anything critical, but it would be better to have it as secure as possible if a time came when I needed to use it due to lack of other equipment.

Hardware Make Kindle DX lighter and more battery

Given Kindle DX[G] weighs almost half a kg and has a very small battery!!! has anyone tried to make it lighter as it is?

Has anyone tried to put a larger battery (somehow)? This is not difficult by any means, in fact I've done it on some other electronic devices like phones etc., but what is important here is to do it in a aesthetically pleasing way...

And lastly, hack it to make a powered hinges (for lighted cover)... ?

Kindle Paperwhite 2 bricked after updating Amazon software?

I have been running my Kindle Paperwhite 2 off wifi for a little while now. Yesterday I decided to connect to the wifi to download updates and a book sample. Now my Paperwhite is stuck in a boot loop...

Here's the sequence of events:

* Connected to wifi.
* Allowed the Kindle to download updates.
* Restarted it to apply the updates.
* Updates applied fine, thought all was well and proceeded to the Kindle store to download a sample of "Ready Player One."
* Created a collection of 4 books.
* Sample downloaded, but it wouldn't open, so I restarted the device.
* Started reading the sample and noticed it got less responsive over the next few pages. Tried clicking footnotes and it stopped responding at all.
* Held down the power button for a few seconds till the restart screen came up.
* Restarted the device.
* Device displayed the "Please wait a moment while your Kindle starts up." screen.
* It's been displaying the same thing since....

Things I've tried:

* Hard reset by the 40-second power button method
* Plugging it into a computer and letting it charge for hours, trying the 40-second method while plugged in.
* Plugging it into the wall, oddly enough it never fully charged even though it was well over half battery when I last looked. The light stayed orange the entire time, even after 4+ hours of charging. Tried the 40-second method while plugged into the wall.
* Chatting with tech-support, only to be told to use the 40-second method while unplugged twice to no avail.

When I try the hard reset, after about 7 seconds the charging indicator flashes 5 times and the backlight shuts off then turns back on. The screen stays the same the entire time.

I don't have USB access. I've tried restarting it while it was plugged in and it never came up.

It's never been jailbroken, always run stock firmwares. When I contacted Amazon they said it's out of warranty, so they offered to replace it at a 60% discount, but I don't know if I want to buy another one when this one bricked so easily. I just want to fix it.

Bricked Kindle PW2

Short story: I plugged my kindle to charge. Went back after a hour or so, and kindle was unresponsive, only showing screensaver.

Things I tried:
Holding down power button( the orange light flashes a few times, but no effect)
Charging overnight( Green light never comes up, only orange)
Disassembling and disconnecting battery ( no effect)

Is there any way to recover it? Can I flash it with serial cable even if's completely frozen? If yes, which one I should buy?
The device is not jailbroken.

Also, the device gets quite hot when being charged. But not the battery itself.
Thanks for help

Also when you connect it to computer, you can hear the sound that the device is connected, but instantly after that there is sound that device is disconnected, so it doesn't appear as usb device.

Would anyone happen to know the incantation to bring up this particular dialog and capability?

Does it require a particular USB device to enable?

I've looked but haven't found a good answer to this question. Can the Kindle's internal storage be replaced? I'm interested in one, but the included storage is just not enough.

Rename 'showlog' to 'showmylog'

From Disable Big Brother thread: All these loggings will drain battery and it's just better to shut it down.

In fact, I go 1 step beyond... having the script showlog might be useful... (for those who don't know: run ./showlog in shell and see interesting outputs it gives you). I'd like to rename it to showmylog to retain its functionality, without 3rd party (or well in this case 1st or 2nd party) using it.

KV USB Drive mode flaky after jailbreak

So I jailbroke my voyage on 5.6.5, but now when I plug it into my computer and it enters the USB Drive mode, it will go back and forth between that screen and the home screen of the kindle. This results in file transfers between the computer and the device failing or hanging. I see it most when trying to dump a bunch of files in the overflow folder for the screensaver hack (I want some comic strips to randomize through as screensavers), but I get it even with small transfers.

Is this a known issue? Anybody else getting this? Help is much appreciated.

SSH failed "connection refused"

Hi guys,

I just got an old Kindle 4.1.2 and I followed the instructions here http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kind...king#Jailbreak to jailbreak it. All steps completed without apparent problems, and I see the Jailbreak book, so I guess it worked.

Next I tried to SSH into it. I have enabled USBnet, allocated my PC's host IP (which is to say I typed in the command and it didn't puke) and tried to SSH in using Putty. It fails "Connection refused".

My first thought is that I didn't actually assign the host PC (Windows Vista) IP address correctly. However, ipconfig shows "Ethernet adaptor Local Area Connection 2" (which Device Manager tells me is a "USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget #2") at address 192.168.15.244 with the correct subnet mask, which suggests to me that this is OK.

So at this point, I'm out of ideas and would appreciate any wisdom you can give me.

Many thanks,
Chris

Jailbrake kindle with broken screen.

Hello, I am trying to jailbreak and usbnet a kindle that has a broken screen.

It is a first gen Kindle DX (B004) and I would like to make use of it for experimenting with the usbnet feature.

I have read the instructions and hopefully applied the update bin. Have no idea if it has worked as I am working blind.

Is there a way to tell if the Kindle has been jailbreak without being able to use the screen?

Cheers :)
Jonny

PW3 Jailbreak 5.6.5

I did not have a 1.8V serial usb when I started this, so I thoroughly rogered the kindle before I actually saw the kindle commandline. The kernel booted, but warned that no kinit could be found.

Breaking into recovery still worked, so
  • enter into recovery abc menu
  • format user partition
  • expose fat partition
  • upload amazon supplied 5.6.5 update
  • install update from user partition

Got me back a working, but still jailed kindle at the latest firmware.

Uboot to the rescue: setting the boot argument to mount the root partition together with init=/bin/sh gave me root access. Remount rw, repasswd root, and all was well.

In the process I did try uboot/bist/fastboot uploading of other ppls partitions and kernels. The MMC in the PW3 seems too new for older kernels, and this will give mmc0 unrecognized EXT_CSD errors (-22) errors.

Hope this provides breadcrumbs for others in the same straits.

PW2 How to Downgrade PW 1 ca from 5.6.1.1 to 5.3.3 and maybe PW2

How to Downgrade Paperwhite 1 Canada from 5.6.1.1 to 5.3.3

Download earlier update file from Amazon: Kindle Paperwhite 1 Update 5.3.3
https://s3.amazonaws.com/G7G_Firmwar...ndle_5.3.3.bin
Disable wifi on your Paperwhite 1 (airplane mode).
Connect your Kindle Paperwhite 1 to your computer (DO NOT DISCONNECT UNTIL LAST STEP!).
Copy the bin file you downloaded in step 1 to root folder of PW1.
Wait at least 2 minutes after copy has completed.
Push and hold power button until your PW1 restarts (the led blinks orange and light turns on at the screen).
Wait until the PW1 has installed the upgrade (really a downgrade).
Now you can DISCONNECT from your computer.

Tested and working on Paperwhite 1 I assume it should work on Paperwhite 2.
