Kindle 4 NT for WIFI tethering

$

Hello,

I want to use my Kindle 4 NT as an USB-WIFI 'stick':
connect the Kindle via USB to my Computer/Raspberry/etc. and to IP-forward the Wifi-Internet-connection of the Kindle to a client.

The problem with the kindle is, that although iptables is there, the ability of ip_forwarding and masquerading is missing due to missing modules.

The KUAL-developer(s) provide these modules in principle:
(http://www.mobileread.com/forums/att...7&d=1361917519), however I can't load the modules on my very device.

I have a jailbreaked device (k4nt) with usbnet running and I tried to insmod the additional kernel modules:
nf_nat.ko and iptables_nat.ko
(in /mnt/us/extensions/system/lib/modules/2.6.31-rt11-lab126/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter after mounting the cfs-file from KUAL-project)

I get the following error message:

[root@kindle netfilter]# insmod nf_nat.ko
insmod: error inserting 'nf_nat.ko': -1 Unknown symbol in module

ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENT PRECOMPILED MODULE FILES THAT WOULD WORK WITH MY K4NT?

The system output is the following:
/var/log/messages (for insmod nf_nat.ko)

150517:182829 nf_nat: Unknown symbol nf_conntrack_tcp_update
150517:182829 nf_nat: Unknown symbol local_bh_enable
150517:182829 nf_nat: Unknown symbol local_bh_disable

[root@kindle netfilter]# uname -a
Linux kindle 2.6.31-rt11-lab126 #5 Sat Jan 12 20:39:09 PST 2013 armv7l unknown

[root@kindle netfilter]# cat /etc/version.txt
System Software Version: 025-H3_yoshi-181303
Sat Jan 12 20:40:53 PST 2013

[root@kindle netfilter]# cat /etc/prettyversion.txt
Kindle 4.1.1 (~~otaVersion~~)

Thanks in advance, Matz.

KV Change bottom margins on Kindle Voyage

Hi,

Is there any way to change the bottom margins on the Kindle Voyage without jailbreaking? What I like most about JBPatch is that the text is moved much closer to the bottom of the screen, so you get more bang for your buck, as it were.

Help finding file for PW2 3G/Wifi

Hi,
can anybody help please.
I've been working on some Paperwhite 3G/Wifi model EY21 European model
SN starting B01D.

They are ex-Demo which has been a problems to overcome as the usual way of dropping the Stock Update file into the /mnt/us/ directory doesn't work with the 3G model but does with the Wifi model (DP75SD1).

I managed to get a mmcblk0p1 image version 5.2.0 which claimed to be for the Paperwhite 2 3G/Wifi. This does work the unit boots and functions on both 3G and Wifi and the Settings are accessible allowing it to be deregistered and reset.
But the update file for the PW2 version 5.6.2.1 still generates Error 3.

What I'd l'd like ideally is to get a later version of the mmcblk0p1 image.
I don't need to jailbreak them just to have them in stock condition.

The method to remove the Demo firmware is quite easy.

Using the Debug serial port inside ,stop booting going to the uboot prompt
issue the command - bootm 0xe41000
When it boots into the Diagnostics select USB Mode and then connect your USB cable from your PC and open the Kindle from My Computer.

Now depending on the model

DP75SP1
Drag Update file into the Root folder
Eject the Kindle
Select exit ,then Reboot and Confirm (Sequence D, R, Q).
The Kindle then updates and reboots.

EY21
Drag the mmcblk0p1 image into the root folder
Eject the Kindle
Select Exit then Exit to Login Prompt
In the terminal (on PC) Login as Root. (Use KindleTool to generate the password using the serial number which can either be read from the terminal screen or from one of the options in Debug)

type dd if=/mnt/us/[filename] of=/dev/mmcblk0p1 bs=4k
Replace [filename] with the actual filename.
This takes a while.
Then type reboot
The Kindle boots-up in normal mode with settings etc accessible.

Can someone supply a later 5.6.x.x image or know where I could find one ?

The Amazon Tech I was chatting with said it couldn't be done but I don't like to give up too easy.

Cheers

KV Collections on Kindle Voyage

Hello,

What possibilities do I have to work easier with collections on non-jailbroken Kindle Voyage? Maybe create and/or operate them at distance, on Cloud, from PC?

I am raising this issue because the keyboard on KV lacks characters specific for my language, and their name just looks bad.

Hi ,
I've got a few reporting this .
How / which file do I need to flash a new version ?
I have a set of images version 5.2.0 (4 files).

I've followed procedure using fastboot to flash diags ,diags kernel ,and the main kernel but always hangs at the same point when trying to boot into diags afterwards.
So I'm guessing there's another file required.
I've been searching the forum but haven't found the answer or I've missed it.

Can someone enlighten me please.

[k3] Enter debugOn/usbNetworking on k3 3g with broken screen?

I have a kindle3 (keyboard/3g) with broken screen that is jailbroken.

Since the screen is broken, I can't see the visual feedback for 'sym' key to enter the sequence to enable USB networking.

Can someone provide the series of blind key presses I would need?

Also, I had 'networking off' - can I turn this on from the Linux command-line? Is there a blind key sequence that would work?

Thank you.

Hi,

Is there any plan to develop some kind of software running on the kindle to connect wirelessly to Calibre ?
Something similar to calibre companion.
I know there is already this included in Koreader, but i am thinking of something lighter that could run silently in background when wifi is activated.

Thanks !

I would like to read epub books on my K3W. I installed Jailbreak, MKK, KUAL, and KOReader, and copied some epub books to the documents folder. When I launch KOReader (using KUAL) I see a menu with 3 selections for filemanager. The first of these displays the home screen with a "KOReader starting ..." message at the bottom, and then hangs. The filemanager (no framework) selection appears to trigger a Kindle restart (screen with tree), and the filemanager (ASAP) selection just goes back to the home screen. I never see the epub titles in either filemanager or the home screen.

I would appreciate help with this. Or if there is another epub reader application with better Kindle3 support I would appreciate a recommendation.

Thanks,
John

Kindle Touch 7 - Collections Manager

I have just bought a new Kindle Touch (to replace my Kindle Keyboard, half the screen went blank).

I don't seem to be able to find the correct Collections Manager, and supporting Jailbreak etc., for the firmware version 5.6.2.1 on this new Kindle Touch.

Is this because there isn't a version yet or have I just not found it?

Can anybody point me in the right direction please?http://s.mobileread.com/i/smiliesadd1/help.gif

K3 How to find firmware version from shell prompt

Hi,

I have a K3W.

I know how to find the firmware version when my Kindle is in its normal "reader" mode by going to Home->Menu->Settings. What shows up there is 3.4.1 (2540470001) so I know I have the latest version.

How do I find the same info via a shell session?

I've looked at /proc/cpuinfo, uname, and dmesg but don't see it there.

K5 [PW1] stuck on U-boot / USB Download Mode / unbrick attempt

I got a bricked PW 1 (only amber light - never reaches green - NS blank CODEX on USB)

after reading a in the forum I started to try my luck in unbricking it - but to be honest I did not get the idea why the K5-Touch and K5-Paperwhite1 stories are mixed together in the forum and I did not find a good explanation .. from my understanding the hardware and board layout is different – so maybe the bootloader too?!?
I figured out that my PW1 is in USB download mode (it displays “NS blank CODEX” in the device Manager in Windows).
I opened the PW1 and attached a 1v8 TTL USB converter to the serial port to see if there was some output over the console -> long story short: no, nothing.

Next step was to try MFGTool to upload U-Boot into RAM directly - this seems to work up to a point :
1st MFG detects the kindle -> that’s OK
2nd MFG is able to upload U-Boot according to profile into RAM -> that’s OK
3rd I do get a serial output on the Console: -> that’s OK
Code:

MMC:  FSL_ESDHC: 0, FSL_ESDHC: 1
Timeout waiting for DAT0 to go high!
mmc switch failed: -19
### ERROR ### Please RESET the board ###

4th after ‘MMC: FSL_ESDHC: 0, FSL_ESDHC: 1’ there is a long wait period -> that’s might be OK, I do not have a comparison.
5th the ‘timeout message appears’ and after this the PW1 reboots. -> that’s is most likely NOT OK

To confirm my approach I have the following questions:
- Is the logged behavior expected? – I think the answer is ‘no’
- Is the logged timeout triggered because of a wrong u-boot version (that was compiled for the K5-Touch and not for the K5-PW1) and do I only need a correct U-Boot for the PW1?
- Do I have a hardware fault on the PW1 board – maybe an EMMC hardware fault?

To find out about an error situation, a valid approach might be to upload a U-Boot with debugging enabled so that the output on the serial console is a little more verbose – does anybody know of a pre-compiled U-Boot version for the PW1 out there in the Internet that I could upload into my PW1?

In Addition to the scenario described above where I used U-Boot included in this forums pre-tailored MFGTool distribution I uploaded u-Boot with the fastboot server included by eureka into my PW1 – but the outcome was not different I had the same error message as in the other version on the serial console.
u-boot serial log with embedded fastboot by eureka on my PW1:
Code:

U-Boot 2009.08-lab126 (Dec 14 2013 - 16:51:54)

MMC:  FSL_ESDHC: 0, FSL_ESDHC: 1
Timeout waiting for DAT0 to go high!
mmc switch failed: -19
### ERROR ### Please RESET the board ###

So guys, can you provide a hint if I can stop trying to unbrick my PW1 or if I should try to connect to the EMMC directly to try to read / or restore the content.

Thanks for your help....

BTW. Which shielding on the PW1-Board contains the emmc chip? The one with the engraved 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Help - can I do a hard reboot from usb?

Background - I have a kindle paperwhite with the screensaver hack. It got drowned after a coffee accident. I dried it out (or thought I had) and a few days later managed to get it to reboot from a reset by holding the power button in for a minute.

It worked for a very short while, but it's now stuck on a screensaver (with a darker line down the left side).

I've tried attaching with a usb cable to a laptop and it can find and search the kindle contents, so I was wondering if there was some way to initiate a hard reset via a USB cable to jump the screen into working again.

Any ideas? I'd hate to have to buy a new one.

Removing the margins on a Kindle Touch?

Hello. I've had this Kindle Touch for a few years now and I haven't had much of a use for it until recently. I've read about all these simple hacks for removing the margins for other Kindles (simply editing the user.pref file) however that doesn't work for my device. Is there a way to accomplish this same goal on a Kindle Touch, even through jailbreaking?
Here is a picture of my current setup, with considerable margins around the page I wish to view:

Thanks in advance!

KV MOBI catalogue of MOBI books on Kindle

Is there a way to create a hyperlinks catalogue for all the MOBI books on the Kindle? As I noticed, whatever I do, the file://mnt/us/... html anchors are not processed correctly.

I tried HTML file as .TXT and converted to .MOBI, viewed with the regular reader. HTML file as .HTML is not seen by the regular reader and cannot be accessed by the Internet browser.

Current Firmware Version of New Paperwhite or Voyage

$

So, I managed to mess up the jailbreak on my Kindle Paperwhite, which I bought new from Amazon.com around this time last year. Basically, I turned on wifi for the first time in ages without checking to see if the jailbreak needed to be updated (I didn't have the version that comes with the KUAL thing), and Amazon updated it to 5.6.x. I tried the jailbreak recovery, but it didn't work. So I tried resetting the Kindle, naively thinking that might roll it back to the version it was shipped with, but it didn't, it just erased all my content, PLUS all the jailbreak files from the main directory... I have 0 technical skills, and just jailbreaking it the first time was a headache, so it seems like that was basically game over for me on that Kindle.

Which is why I'm considering giving it to a family member and just buying a new one, with a lower, jailbreakable firmware. All I really want the jailbreak for is to change the screensavers and customize the fonts, but it's really important to me - I really hate all the fonts the Kindle Paperwhite comes with, and the screensavers are all incredibly ugly. I also am not happy with the way the Paperwhite manages collections when I have wifi off, constantly notifying me that things won't be synced to their cloud service, which I don't care about at all. So if the Kindle Voyage handles that differently, I'd probably that one instead.

So my questions are, what firmware does a new Kindle Paperwhite or Voyage from Amazon ship with, or where might I find one (new) with a lower firmware, and does the Voyage handle fonts/screensavers/collections any differently from the Paperwhite?

Thanks!

K3 Device not charging -- is there a HW fix?

$

Hi guys,

both me & my wife have had a Kindle 3 (keyboard) for about 4 years. All was fine until suddenly both devices stopped charging; the two events happened six months apart, but the symptoms are the same: when we plug in the USB cable, the orange light lights up for about 10 seconds, then goes out. My device shows a very dim version of the Kindle loading screen, while my wife's stopped working while booting up (loading screen + a gauge at the bottom).

We even ordered a replacement battery, but it did not solve the problem. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that the charging circuit is to blame, or maybe the USB port? Is there a way to find out where the fault lies, and to find a replacement for the part in question?

Thanks!
