$

Hi,

So been reading this forum for a time :book2:, to see if I can jailbreak my kindle. It's not brand new, I mean it was updated by amazon to 5.9.4 a while ago.

Can I still jailbreak it? with this method :
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=313086

Also, should be registred, and ad free, or doesn't matter?

"USB Connected" screen image replacement

$

Dear Mobileread Community,

I need your help in replacing screen image when Kindle Paperwhite 3 (5.9.7) is connected via USB.
I had no problem doing that on Kindle 4 Non-Touch.
However, it seems like besides the png file itself, their is also an eips (?) command to draw something else.
What I did:
1) Prepared an image. Just took my favorite one and after some tweaks in GIMP, I finally converted it to a proper eips-compatible format:
Code:

convert input.png -type GrayScale -depth 8 -colors 256 -resize 1072x1448! output.png
2) Replaced bg_usbconnect.png in /usr/share/blanket/usb and gave it the same permission chmod as it was of the original one. I attached my screen image to this post.
3) Now, when I connect to USB, my new screen image shows up very well, but on top of that there are two more things. One is a text 'If you want to read while still charging... blahblah', another is a small white square of a charging icon. I can see that it is ov_default_charging.png (I attached it too) in the same folder.
4) I returned to (1) and added a white circle approximately at location around that square.

Why approximately? Because I don't have exact coordinates or a combined pictures of them all.
Well, here come two problems:
1) I have no idea how to take screenshot of the screen while Kindle is connected via USB. I tried to:
— press the diagonally opposite corners of the screen (as for usual screenshot). Screen blinks, as if it took a screenshot, but I can't find it. I guess, because /mnt/us/ is now unmounted and presented to PC, there is no place to put screenshot to.
— access ssh during usb connection, but Kindle is inaccessible when connected, so I can't reach command line to invoke 'screenshot' command.
— connect to ssh first, then do 'sleep 20; screenshot' command, then connect to usb and wait for these 20 sec to pass. Screen again flashes as if it took the screenshot, but I can't find it anywhere.
2) I have no success in finding a script for USB connection event neither to see how these two extra things are drawn. I looked up in /etc/upstart/ using Total Commander's 'Search in files' feature trying to find anything related to 'usb'. There should be a daemon (or sort of 'listener') that catches the /mnt/us/ upon usb connection and manages its mount to PC and back to Kindle.

If I have at least coordinates of that little square, I could've replaced it by the same pixels of my new image at these coordinates, so that the square would seem 'transparent'.

Do you guys have any suggestions?
Thanks!

PW4 w/jailbreak: restart takes 3 minutes

Since upgrading to 5.10.1.2 (and maybe a fake registration) it takes my kindle up to 3 minutes to restart.
Even holding the power button for >40 seconds does not speed up the restart or breaks the time-out period.

Device Kindle PW4: G000 T6 (european, 32GB, WIFI-only, w/ special offers)

Initial fimrware was 5.10.0.1 then it was successfully jb'ed.
Recent firmware 5.10.1.2

hotfix: JailBreak-1.15.N-FW-5.x-hotfix
KUAL version: KUAL-v2.7.14-g174c43f-20181209
Python: kindle-python-0.15.N-r15585.tar
ScreenSaver: kindle-linkss-0.25.N-r15585
USBNet: kindle-usbnet-0.22.N-r15585.tar
LibrarianSync: librariansync-1.10.tar.gz + FIX LibrarianSync.zip

The device was fake-registered first, now it is registered with Amazon

I'm not sure for 100% but it seem to me, the slow restart began after creating a fake registration
(writing a file /var/local/java/prefs/reginfo) after the update to 5.10.1.2.
Therefore I decided to register it the normal way with Amazon, but this does not reduce the restart time.

Libriansync, screensaver and USBNet are working so far.

It's more an observation than a problem to me on the other hand I'm curious to know whats happening there.

PW3 Will there be a software jailbreak for pw3 5.9.7?

$

Probably a frequently spammed question, but is there any point waiting for a software jailbreak before I defile my precious pw with a screwdriver?

I mean don't get me wrong, I've been browsing the forum all day, I really appriciate the help you seem to give patiently to everyone, but as a novice I'd prefer to wait for a possible quicker softwareside approach, and distance myself from the serial jb for a while.

I have a 4gb wifi only pw3, (g090g1...) which has been used for almost a year now. It was updated a couple of times, so I'm not even sure if it was the original fw version but given it's also the latest one I assume it wasn't. I have special offers on the screesaver, and don't really have an options in my amazon account to switch it off manually, so I'm gonna have to call the support service supposedly. I've read through the 5_x_Jailbreak wiki page and the lately updated 5.x.y threads I found in the forum and concluded that I have the serial option only.

You can hit me with the "beating the dead horse emoji", but could you also tell me wheter will there be a secure non-serial approach for 5.9.7 pw3? :thanks:

WiFi Remote Footswitch

I made a remote footswitch that can be used to flip pages on a Kindle PW. The project is targeted at musicians who have their sheet music on the kindle but do not have any free hands while playing an instrument.
The remote contains an ESP8266 microcontroller that creates a WiFi access point to which the kindle can connect. The page flipping is done via a webserver that runs on the kindle.
Detailed description of the project can be found below.

Hi,

I would like to present my "kindle weather dashboard" project

It is simple webpage with actual weather info and forecast.

No jailbreak needed. Just disable screensaver, type URL and plug kindle to power source.

More info on github page: https://github.com/matopeto/kindle-weather-dashboard

Kindle timezone

Hi, anyone knowns how to set timezone in kindle paperwhite (not jailbroken)

This is my problem:

I set time on kindle to 23:51

in javascript/browser i call Date.now() and i get 1546037486922

This is in GMT: Friday, December 28, 2018 22:51:26.922

So my kindle is somewhat in +1 timezone, from where this settings come from?

When i set time on kindle to 22:57 (one hour less)

Date.now() is 1546037913339

This is GMT: Friday, December 28, 2018 22:58:33.339

This give me +0 timezone

It seems kindle is running in GMT and set the timezone from diff time you set and GMT time.

This is very strange behaviour. Anybody have a explanation?

Any Hope To Bring Back My Screensavers?

First the obligatory I messed up. Not sure how I managed to turn off Airplane mode, but none the less, I returned to my Kindle Voyage in time to see the update to 5.10.2 complete.

My device was jail broken with KUAL and Screensavers installed before the update. In reading through the forum, I see some folks had success with previous FW version 5.9.X, however I am not seeing anything with 5.10.X.

I have tried updating KUAL, however, still getting an Application Error when selecting it.

After installing the nomax hotfix, I was able to run using ;log mrpi the dummy_testupdate.log.

Thus far have been unsuccessful in my attempts at bringing back my screensavers. I have dropped the linkss-0.24 file in the /mrpackages folder, attempted the install using ;log mrpi, it appears to install (get the message on the bottom of the screen, S randomizing screensavers...pops up) yet the screen savers do not populate. Only the stock images show. In the directory, all the correct folders and images are in place.

I would greatly appreciate any insight and/or assistance that could be afforded me.

Thank you

usbnet 0.22.N "too new" for KV 5.6.1 firmware?

$

I bought a backup KV when it seemed pretty clear it had been discontinued and jailbroke it.

I let it sit for a while until I decided what firmware I wanted to put on it. I eventually found that 5.6.1 is recent enough to support the new xray format and old enough to not support KFX. (Yay!)

KUAL and KUAL+ work fine, but
Update_usbnet_0.22.N_install_pw2_kt2_kv_pw3_koa_kt 3_koa2_pw4.bin
gets deleted instead of ungraying UYK.

Should usbnet 0.22.N install on a KV running 5.6.1 or do I need to use an earlier version, and if so, which version do I need?

TIA

PW4 Touchscreen software driver/hardware Issue with PW4

$

Hey everyone!

Recently I purchased a Kindle PW4 from a local shop and was really joyful to see the new kindle right out of the box. As a routine after my jailbreak, I tested typing from the kterm keyboard, and soon discovered the key 'P' and '[' were quite often mistyped. For example, when typing 'unzip abc.zip', if you don't pay special attention to your typing, it's very likely to be 'unzi[ abc.zi['.

I dived further into the issue and launched xtestlab126 in my terminal, and I discovered that on the right side of the screen, when I draw a line down the screen, the track on the screen would be a bit righter compared to my finger's physical track. The issue occurs especially near the place where the key 'P ; . [ ↑ ↓ ←' are located, the track drifted about 2mm.

So that explained why the keys listed are so easily mistyped. Meaning that if you touch on the righter part of the key 'P' on the keyboard, the drift will bring you to '[' on the keyboard. I've contacted Amazon to have my Kindle replaced and they accepted. After getting another *new* Kindle, I jailbroke it, and did the same test. The issue remains.

Now I'm posting this on the forum to ask if you guys who had a PW4 have the same issue? Or anyone help to test out if your PW4 has the same issue?Just can't be sure if this is a display manufacturing issue (hardware) or a touchscreen driver issue (software).

My hardware & software info:
Device: Kindle Paperwhite 4 with serial starting with G000.
Firmware: 5.10.1.2 jailbroken

I'll post the video reproduction of the issue later on the forum.

Thanks everyone for help! :thanks:

Help unbricking PW2

I've been reading the forum a lot to try to fix my Kindle Paperwhite 2 after I stupidly accepted a firmware update request. It is a 2013 wifi 4Gb model. (Serial number starts with 9017)

As a total novice, I have managed to make a serial connection and follow the guide here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=267541

I'm up to the part where I copy the jailbreak files onto the kindle, which I've done. However my problem is the kindle keeps rebooting itself and halting. Eventually it ends up with a message on screen "Your kindle needs repairing. Error Code 2"

This is the boot sequence:

I can interrupt the boot and get into diag mode which prevents the restarts and eventual halt. Perhaps I should run the Jailbreak from there? Or perhaps I should be doing some sort of firmware re-flashing rather than the jailbreak steps?

Would really appreciate some advice, not sure what my next move should be...

WAF Can't capture long press / hold

Hello there,

I'm working on a Smarthome Display based on Weblaunch, but I have a huge problem:

I can't get onMouseDown or onTouchStart events in javascript. If i tap shortly on a button i get the onMouseDown and onClick events, but if you press for longer, i get no events at all, not even after releasing.

Is there any way to capture those?

Because of the slow display changes, people assume you need to hold down a button until something happens :-)

Possible to Downgrade JB PW3 5.10.1.1 to 5.9.7?

Happy New Year!
Apologies for posting this thread as it surely explained somewhere in forum. But I'm still not 100 % sure with the answer or exactly how to do it if it is possible and not bricking my device.
So as it should be seen from the title I have jailbroken Paperwhite 3 which is currently running firmware 5.10.1.1 and for some reasons I want to go back to 5.9.7 ( randomly the number of page/time left in ... at the bottom disappears and also font type is changing without my intervention for few pages and then back again).
As my understanding should be possible using Downgrader from NiLuJe's Snapshots.Extracting the downgrader's archive, puting the .bin file from archive in MRPI folder on my Kindle, making "official_update" folder in root Kindle's directory and put Amazon's 5.9.7 update there. Please tell me if I'm right or wrong?

Kindle Touch unresponsive

Tried resetting Kindle Touch , no response to holding down button, could not even turn off device. Screen is stuck with screen saver image.

Charged the Kindle, it is now plugged into my Macbook Air. Yellow blinking light on bottom of Kindle. Default screen saver is frozen on screen, does not respond.*

Still now showing up on Macbook.

How do I determine if it is a bad battery or something else? I can order a new battery, but if that is not the problem, is there any other solutions, or a way to get the device repaired?

How can I make my kindle reload its booklist?

I am sure that I've copied the files into my kindle, for example, /mnt/us/test.txt. However, after safely ejecting the USB mass storage on Windows, I cannot see the text file neither in kindle's home screen nor in `ls`'s output from the kterm. Actually I can still find the file in the explorer if I connect it to my computer again(Quite strange). In most cases, the files(books) would finally appear after the midnight, which really puzzles me.

I've had my SSHD enabled, and all the files transferred via SSH will appear normally in no time, thus I prefer using SSH...

Maybe this has something to do with the file system. (?)
Will the problem be solved by forcely making the kindle reload its booklist/database, like using lipc-set-prop or something else?

Would much appreciate your help... :chinscratch:

KOA2 Lockscreen background get lighter when inputing password...

Some of my friends who have KPW4(latest firmware version) also have such experience.

It happens usually when the kindle is awakened after a long time. After "WAKING UP", I inputed my password to unlock the kindle. Every time when I press a number button, the background image just gradually lost random pixels so that the picture itself looked lighter... The background stopped changing if I have inputed a lot of digits.

No problem occurrs if it's not awakened from sleeping.

An unknown bug. XD

Jailbreaking a PW4 with G001 serial number

Just got my 2018 Kindle PaperWhite. Just opened it and noticed its serial number says G001 XXXXXXX.

I have been able to get to the You are Jailbroken step.

After this if i try the hotfix, kindle throws up an update error.

I am also not able to install KUAL and MRI.

Any help/suggestions?

P.S. I havent updated my kindle yet ..It's still at 5.10.0.2.
