I have a Kindle Voyage running firmware 5.8.9.2. is the serial port technique able to jailbreak this? I know some linux and a little python.

Dumb question time!
Is there a preferred way to charge the batteries on a Kindle (in my case a PW2). I mean should I let the charge level significantly deplete before trying to recharge, or should I charge every night to keep it 'topped off'? Right now, sometimes I do one, and sometimes, the other.
I know modern batteries don't need to be drained every so often the way the old ni-cads did, but is there a charging strategy that maximises battery life?
Edit: I just noticed this is in the developers forum, when I intended it to be in the broader forum. I don't know how to move it. Sorry!

Tools Snapshots of Coplate's packages
I have made a variety of updated bin files and other tweaks, so I wanted to put them in a central site for now.
Before this gets overloaded, I will put the files on my website, but for the time being, I will attach this one here.
This is a version of the Hotfix for touch devices that will run on normal software versions ( not just the factory ). I have verified on my PW3 that the jailbreak itself remains through the rest process, but I needed this package to re-install the hotfix.
This package say it supports k4, but that is only in there to force a bad value on the target revision, making this work on any version of the software. I am working on doing that the right way. I will need to fork kindletool to do that.
You can use this in the software jailbreak thread, and this should work for all versions that works for, and for people who have jailbroken over serial - I put in all of the new paperwhites and kindle oasis codes that I know of.

Am I missing something? (Image conversion for eips and others)
First off, I want to say thanks to everyone for all the information which has helped me get my kindle jailbroken (and I think you guys did before when I did one many moons ago).
I'm not meaning to step on any toes here but I think I'm seeing a mistake repeated and just want to check in (it could be me misunderstanding).
So when people are converting images for display on eips with ImageMagick, they are converting to 8 bit PNG and it's working fine (and it works for me). However, I am seeing this parameter in the examples I see on this site.
-dither FloydSteinberg
Now, that's a fine dithering option. However, it's my understanding that without the colors option, it won't properly compress the color space, you'll have 256 levels of grey, stored in 8 bits and no dithering so you'll get banding etc (my testing indicates this to be the case. I could probably post pics). This needs to be changed to
-dither FloydSteinberg -colors 16
which will drop the levels to 16 and allow the error correction to occur.
I would also suggest trying the other options for dithering as some work better for some images than others (I did some work a few years back dithering images for thermal printers)
Edit: Interestingly, when I google for the correct form, I get two results which are not from this site, but do link back here (but not to anything apparently relevant)

custom font problem on Oasis - 5.8.10
Hello guys,
recently I upgraded my Oasis to version 5.8.10, and afterward there's a problem with custom font using Linkfonts.
I used to override the system's font with a .conf file in /mnt/us/linkfonts/etc/conf.d, after upgraded to 5.8.10 I re-installed Python and Linkfonts and uses the same .conf file as before, and the font override won't work on books of .kfx format, but works well on .azw3 book.
Does anyone run into the same issue as me, and is there a known solution for this?

I've wanted to reinstall the jailbreak but I don't want to reset my device.

PW3 Refurbished Kindle Examination
The subject here is a "Amazon Certified Refurbished Kindle" (PW3-4Gbyte).
The device has been on the market nearly two years now, the point here is to see what can be learned about this device's past.
It arrived in a rather plain brown box, Amazon logo on top, serial number seal on flap.
So I removed it from its box.
Not being satisfied with doing that, I next removed it from its case.
And hooked up a serial port to it.
(Note: I have not yet turned it on, I want to catch what I can before the 'first boot, run once' changes happen.)
Once ready to turn it on for the first time, I stopped the auto-boot while in u-boot and then manually booted diags.
Oh fun and games, the 'diags' system is much different than what we have written up in the serial jail breaking thread.
No escape to the command line that I have been able to find yet.
Ah, but - -
'Export USB' -
Hookup usb cable -
Find the usual customer view of USB storage -
Eject the USB storage (leaving cable attached) and the menu gives you a choice of 'C' (continue) or 'X' (exit).
Hmm...
How do you continue after the device has been disconnected?
Press: C
And what do you know -
Its idea of continuing brings up USBnetworking.
(There are other messages, in other branches of the diags menu, that relate to mounting an NFS exported root file system and ones about enabling fastboot.)
Now if I can just remember the USBnetworking (Lab126) defaults ....
More as I find out what all of these changes mean (other than they broke our serial jail breaking thread).
= = = =
It is way past the time when they roll up the sidewalks here and sane people go to bed (or watch Star Trek reruns).
I think I will test the 'Power Off' menu entry and continue this thread tomorrow.

Tutorial Serial Jailbreaking FW >= 5.6.1.1
This tutorial is based on the earlier tutorial:
Serial Jailbreaking FW >= 5.6 for Dummys
You will need to follow those instructions until you have a working serial port connection.
That thread is written for users of Windows.
For Linux and MacOSx - use the very good terminal emulator "minicom".
Check the sticky Master Index on the topic "Serial Port" to find specific "minicom" instructions.
(I'll find them myself later and update the comment above.)
= = = =
At this point, you have your Kindle talking to your PC over the serial port.
You will need some of the usual add-in packages, gathered NiLuJe's snapshots thread:
If you have a Linux/BSD/MacOSx based PC of relatively recent vintage, the system provided archive handler should 'just work'.
You will need the actual jail break (signature certificate) from Branch Delay's post and a package from coplate's snapshots thread:
That is enough for one edit - I'll work on the howto part of this post in a decent text editor and update this thing from time-to-time this afternoon.

Native Hierachical Notebook - Kindle Port!
Description:
hnb - hierarchical notebook. This is a 2003 vintage Linux command line utility. It allows you to create a list of notes indented to any level.
Author: Øyvind Kolås.
Website: http://hnb.sourceforge.net/
From the man page: "hnb is an ncurses program to organize many kinds of data in one place, for example addresses, todo lists, ideas, book reviews or to store snippets of brainstorming, to make a structured packing list or just to take random notes.
It can export ascii/html/latex/postscript, supports todo checkboxes, checkbox trees with percentages and searching.
hnb uses a simple ascii file for storing your notes. This file can be specified on the command line. If not specified, ~/.hnb is loaded (or created if missing)."
Porting:
Though the source code is available, I just extracted the binary from the Debian-Jessie-Armel repository, added a library file and dressed it up in a KUAL package!
Needs: Jailbroken Kindle, KUAL, kterm.
Should work on: All Kindles from KT1 onwards. Tested OK on: PW1, PW3, KT3.

K5 Builtin Browser over USBNetwork without WiFi
Hi!
For a few hours now I'm trying to get the Kindle Browser to work over USBNetwork with WiFi disabled. But I always get the "Turn On Wireless" Dialog. When I click "Cancel" the page doesn't load.
Is there a way to disable the dialog and let the browser use the USB network, without enabling WiFi?
I got everything working with packet forwarding etc. I can ping stuff on the Internet from the Kindle.
I got a Kindle Touch (D01200) with Firmware 5.3.7.3 and the current Jailbreak and USBNetwork.

Attempts to get Paper-white into download mode without disassembly
I have seen some other people attempt this, so I thought I would put my attempts that have not worked.
Here is what @eureka found in 2011 for the Kindle Touch.
Because the kindle recognizes touches on two opposite corners to do screenshots, I was hoping there was some configuration to mimic home button.
If anyone knows the config file that specifies the pixels that screenshot works in, please let me know it may have this info, or prove it false.

When mode is enabled, Kindle is recognized as USB HID device with VID 0x15A2 and PID 0x0052. It should be possible to connect to it via custom Serial Download Protocol designed by Freescale and described in MCU Reference Manual. Protocol allows to read/write memory, upload program image into RAM and start executing at given address. (More info has been dumped to wiki page about Kindle Touch hacking). To enable this mode one should perform "hard reset" with pressed Home button. Hold Home button, then perform "hard reset" by holding Power button for 20 seconds and releasing it. Then wait about a second or two and release Home button. That's all. It's easier to follow with Kindle connected to computer. After 20 seconds of holding Power button, Kindle USB disk should be detached from computer. It's time to release Power button. Then Kindle should be recognized as USB HID device. Now Home button could be released. With loading arbitary code to RAM and executing it, this mode could be used as base for the ultimate unbricking solution, so I'm pretty excited about it. But it could be just a useless discovery if any restrictions will be revealed in further exploration. Anyway, it is of no value for ordinary user right now. |

Tools Kindle backup
As attached, for the touch screen Kindles only.
It is a script, with a pair of tables to control what gets backed up.
The tables could be changed for the earlier than KT devices if somebody was interested in doing it.
You will need command line access to the Kindle to run this script.
Translation: one of kTerm, telnet, ssh, serial port
Installation?
Un-compress it and put it wherever you want it on the Kindle (it will run from the user storage partition).
Running it:
It writes to user storage (/mnt/us/backups) so it will not work if you have user storage exported over the USB cable.
Just call it by name, it will create the (Kindle:)/backups directory if required.
In the couple of cases where the exact size to copy is not known in advance, it copies an over-sized chunk.
That only happens when copying the two kernels and those can be trimmed down to size after they are copied.
(The 'file' command or the 'mkimage -l' command will tell you how long the actual contents is.)
For the curious, the script:
