What Jailbreak is best for my kindle?

Hi!

I have a kindle at FW-version 5.6.5 with serial-number prefix "90C6" A.K.A. Kindle Basic (2014), KT2, BASIC.
Spoiler:
I got my ads removed by amazon and the fun thing is: I switched Wi-Fi on and got the message of ads being 'removed' and I still had time to go airplane mode before the kindle had downloaded any new firmware. Just something that can be good to know :D

I want to Jailbreak my kindle but I am not sure if I should go with the Jailbreak for FW 5.6.5 or if I should update my kindle and use the Jailbreak for any FW version.

Are there differences in what 'programs' you can install for the different jailbreaks?
Pro's and Con's for them both?
Which one is easiest to maintain?

There is somewhere a list of the firmwares' checksum? I've not found it :(

It would be useful to avoid flashing of firmwares not correctly downloaded

PW3 After Jailbreak..

I jailbreaked my Kindle Paperwhite 3 running 5.6.5 using theese instructions , specifically in hopes of using CoolReader. I've been looking around this website for a little while now, as well as the web in general and besides this, I have found nothing that says anything about PW3 on the tin. For example the paperwhite and touch instructions for CoolReader tell you to follow instructions for K5 Collections Manger. That has NOTHING on PW3. Same with MKK, which everything seems to require. So what's up with this? Is this reader super unpopular so nobody makes stuff for it, or what?:help: Actually, I just realised that MKK Comes with the jailbreak, so that part's ok.

I downloaded 5.7.4 fireware of KPW3 and copied it into the kpw3. But after updating, it stuck in the reboot screen (the big tree). Then I can't reboot it and can not find the device when I link it to my computer.

Tutorial Disable Kindle Indexing Without Jailbreaking

$

Hi everybody!
And thank you all for this useful board :)

I wanted to share this trick with you, that I'm not the first one to find out but anyway...

The book indexing on the kindle refer to the process of registering words of each book on the device in database to be used by the search function. You need this if you intend to search for words in your books, be it from the home screen search box of from inside a book. This process consume quite a lot of CPU and battery. It happens each time you load new books on the device, and refresh every 6 months. If you put a lot of books at once, you can expect two different things:

- With an older version of the software, the device may freeze or become difficult to use until indexing is done
- With newer versions of the software, indexing process is more soft but take longer

In both cases you end up with you battery going down quicker than usual. Also indexing datas take a bit of space (like 10Mb for 100 books).

After loading the kindle with a lot of books, some peoples let it plug on the computer until indexing is finish. You'll have to eject the device in your operating system to make it quit the usb mode and go back to normal mode. This way the software can go on with indexing without trying to save energy (for newer versions). I think it can takes as long as few days if you have a lot of books. You can check how much stay to be indexed: search for a word that won't be found, like "tttt", and look for result in books. It will tell you if some books are still to be indexed.

Anyway you may want to skip this step and go with you e-reader without loosing energy for this function. Or maybe you don't care about this search stuff and just want to disable it for good.

The simple solution is to plug your device on a computer and move the directory "system/Search Indexes" somewhere else or delete it. This directory contain the search indexes datas, as you can guess. If you put it back later search function and indexing will be back. Note that the device doesn't loose the record of which book have been indexed and which have not, which sound strange to me but anyway... Without this directory it won't feed index anymore.

I guess most of users here don't need this trick because they have another option on jailbreaked device; but maybe someone will reach this post from a search engine and find it useful.

Hope this help.

I have a KV with firmware 5.6.1.0.5

I believe I have successfully Jailbroke and installed KUAL, but cannot seem to install any utilities.

Here is a screenshot of my Kindle USB directory as seen from my Mac. And a screenshot of KUAL when I launch it.

I expect my directory structure is wrong, but would appreciate any help. I have googled and read a lot of the forums but could not find the answer so sorry if this is a really stupid question.

Thanks

Debricking Kindle 3

Hi

Ill try to be as informative as possible

My kindle 3 screen cracked and was left in a drawer for around a year and a half.

I replaced the screen and left it on charge, the screen changed to the slide to unlock tree screen but it didn't switch on.

I plugged it into a PC and the kindle was detected as SE Blank Ringo.

Found the debricking tutorials of ATK and kubrick and charged the kindle for almost 2 days, kubrick didn't work and after further research saw that it wasn't going into ram kernel mode(the 4 instead of 8 bytes error), ATK wasn't working either.

Charged up the battery externally to 3.75 volts, and got the same error. Used an external power supply and still have the same error.

Is there anything else i could try?

I managed to upgrade my Kindle DXG from 2.5.8 to 3.4.2 yesterday.
when I open the Kindle Store, I find it always display the same books on the frontpage.
If I search anybook in the store I get nothing.
My 3G is working.

Is this a known issue with 3.4.2 on DXG?

KOA: Trouble with KUAL

I am probably just doing something wrong but ... :)

The device is Oasis with FW 5.8.5.0.1, jailbroken, with MRPI, KUAL and some extensions, say usbnet, installed from thread "Snapshots of NiLuJe's hacks". All good.

The problem is that using the extension menus via KUAL does not really work. For example, enabling usbnet + ssh via KUAL does nothing, while using the ;un search bar shortcut works.

Taking for example the USBNetwork menu item "** USBNetwork Status **", clicking it does nothing. Connect via ssh and executing the script manually displays the correct, expected message.

If I edit the menu.json file and remove the ""exitmenu": false," parameter, clicking the menu entry will exit KUAL and display the correct message. This applies to any KUAL extension, but ... it is a bit annoying to exit every time when running a command.

Anybody else facing this issue?

Is it possible to change the progress indicator on a current gen Kindle?

Is it possible to change the progress indicator on a jailbroken current gen Kindle?

Instead of the time remaining indicator I'd like to have a FBReader-style bar with chapter marks.

Is this possible (it worked on the KT), and if so how?

Edit:
>Which model?
Don't most of the current gen Kindles run the same firmware?
Let's say the Voyage or Oasis for sake of example.

PW3 System fonts

Hello everybody,

While hacking my new PW3 I have noticed that the system font is way smaller than its PW2 counterpart.

In case I am using "system font" incorrectly, I mean the font that is used by, for example, the MRPI to document its actions while installing hacks, or the font that the KUAL extension "Show Time" uses to print the time in the upper right corner.

Is there a way to enlarge it (possibly without resorting to the font hack)?

Thanks

Any detailed help for Usbnetwork? Strange things keep happening

Device: Kindle Paperwhite 2 (Japan)
System: 5.4.2
Status: Jailbroken; USBNetwork, MRI, Kindle Explorer and some other small hack installed

Issues:

1.

It was a long time ago (maybe 1 or 2 years) when I got the kpw2 jailbroken and installed these hacks. I had a hard time toggling USBNetwork and find someone's guide to use SSH over wifi, using the "authorized_key" (like this one). It worked at first.

Then strange things happened: the kindle couldn't connect to PC by usb. Just charging. No matter what OS (Win xp,7,8,10 or Ubuntu&Fedora) and cable I use.

I can't remember well what's the cause, and it remains the same now. I thought maybe it has stayed in usb-ssh mode, but it didn't shows up in windows network adapter, connecting to 192.168.15.244 in SCP/SSH no luck, and using some command lines in Linux showed no usb0 or something like that... I just gave up.

2.

However, with Personal Documents I can still read the books in kindle fine. Kindle Explorer ensures the ability to edit files. And another weird thing also helps me: I can access the files over wifi-ssh, although I've already deleted the authorized_key file in kindle and use no privatekey.ppk in my computer. I just toggle the USBNetwork on, and type in kindle's ip address in WinSCP, username root, no password. I don't know if this is normal behavior. Using putty's SSH command line is also okay.

But I've always been wanting to update (after hearing jailbreak survives the update with some bridging), and if the update will disable jailbreak at first, I will not be able to transfer the bridging file to the kindle. So I still want to fix the usb issue if there's any hope.

Note:

the config file in the kindle shows SSH over wifi is disabled (the introductory texts have been deleted):
Code:

KINDLE_IP=192.168.15.244
USE_WIFI="false"
USE_WIFI_SSHD_ONLY="false"
USE_OPENSSH="false"
QUIET_DROPBEAR="false"
TWEAK_MAC_ADDRESS="false"

And in the attachments: there's the screenshot with the text showing up after I toggle usbnet on, and another one is the usbnet/etc directory files with these I-don't-know-what-it-means files. Maybe they'll give some information.

PS: The i.MX6 requires a special format - Buildroot(.org) will build it for you.

Easier to implement -
The Kindles will network boot and can mount the file system exported by NFS.

Can this be a starting point?

K3 Problems with usbNetwork

Alright. So this is my first post here. I'm sort of new to linux.

Anyways, I have a Kindle 3 US with 3G and wifi. I got the device for free from a store, and the device was still signed in to, and had books on it. I signed out first thing, but I didn't factory reset the device, and I was stupid enough to not make any backups of the "base-us" and "us" folders. :smack: I applied the jailbreak for my model, then applied the usbNetwork hack. Then I added Kiterm, following this guide for everything.

I then got inspired to install Debian on the kindle. I tried a ton of different versions of it, then tried to find a Ubuntu Jaunty ftp dist repo, with no luck. I turned back to Debian. I used this command to copy over the debian.ext3 file over to my kindle's "base-us" directory, but ran out of space. I then deleted the "debian.ext3" file, and was like, "wait, can't I delete the '/mnt/debian' folder, too?" I then proceeded to delete the folder, COMPLETELY forgetting to unmount them.

After that point, I'm not sure exactly what happened, but something happened to cause me to want to factory reset the kindle, which I then did. The kindle got stuck on the "Please wait while your kindle starts up screen." I waited, without any results, and then put the kindle into recovery mode. Nothing was on the screen at that point, except for the factory reset option. I chose that, and the kindle rebooted back to the normal screen. And all of the books that were left there by the previous owner were gone.

First thing I did was put the device into debug mode, and run the ~help search command. I noticed the ~usbNetwork command was still in the list, so I concluded that the device still had those installed. I ran the ~usbNetwork command, and then plugged the device in, but nothing happened. I noticed Kiterm still worked at that point, and navigated to "/mnt/us" to check to see if some files (Kiterm's, the Jailbreak's, and usbNetwork's) were left over there: They weren't. I downloaded the source code for the Jailbreak and usbNetwork, and stuck the "linkjail," "extensions," and "usbnet" folders from the source to the kindle via normal usb storage. I also copied the contents of "extensions" to "usbnet," just in case. Tried to uninstall them using the *.bin uninstall files (one by one, not at once.): uninstall failed. Restarted and now Kiterm will not start. (So no terminal access now.)

This is already extremely long, but anyways:
tl;dr, usbNetwork 0.57.N and the k3g Jailbreak 0.13.N don't want to uninstall and are missing folders. How can I recover from this?

Thanks in advance.

Also, for when I do get my kindle back to functioning order, does anyone have a ext3 debian linux os file that will work on Kindle V3.4.2? :p

KT2 Bricked Kindle Basic (2014)

Hello

I bricked my kindle. All what I did was... deleting /bin folder on root. :smack: It's a long story. Pretty stupid anyway, huh? Kindle worked for some time after this incident, so I tried to ssh into it. I had a back up, so I thought that maybe I will be able to copy contents from /bin on backup to /bin on my kindle. But instead I connected to it normally and it froze on usb screen (it was happening to me a couple of times before). I could only restart it (turn off screen/restart window showed up after pressing power for longer time, so it wasn't completly stuck). Anyway.

Now it's stuck on boot screen with tree, without progress bar. Completly stuck, no auto reboots or things like that.

I looked up this forum, but I'm not in 100% sure what to do. I charged it for about 2 days, led is still orange, but I heard that is normal. I tried DO_FACTORY_RESTORE metod, but kindle doesn't want to show up as usb drive, no matter if I'm connecting it to linux (both VM and installed on real machine) or windows (maybe I dont't have proper drivers). I had Crowards Rescue Pack installed (even rescued my kindle once thanks to it), but this time kindle just doesn't want to boot into diagnostic menu. I don't know how to do a fastboot on KT2, I couldn't find any info.
Does it mean that I will have to open my kindle, and try to restore it via ttl and uboot? Is there any hope for it?

Thanks anyway.

Sorry for my grammar, I tried.

Hi guys,
I've been looking for a new browser for my kindle for a while, and Baf's SkipStone project looks perfect. The issue is that when I try to download it from his website (link below) it always freezes up halfway through. I've tried a few different browsers, but it appears to be a server issue. Does anybody know where to find a working link to get it? Thanks!
