After disappearing of books and jailbreak now frozen screen

$

Hello there,

I face some troubles with my paperwhite 2. I had a similar problem as described in this thread: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=277668

And I was not able to solve this issue (I also tried all the things previously described in the thread, my PW2 is always on airplane mode but out of the blue, my PW2 decided not to display its current content anymore).

So I decided (not sure if it was a smart decision) to jailbreak it. The jailbreak worked out fine. After the jailbreak, I wanted to add the KULA as a display option and installed it (KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2). I had the not so smart idea to chose the "restart Kindle" option out of the dropdown menu before letting the kindle update the new software.

Currently the PW2 is stuck in a frozen mode. It shows the initial start page with the person on the hill reading. The problem is that the PW2 wont show up as a USB device on the computer anymore. I tried in different operating systems, but neither recognizes the PW2 as a USB device anymore.
I also let the battery get completely empty, hoping that this might allow access to the PW2 on a computer. But it also does not work.

And the (soft and hard) reboot of the system does reboot the screen but it also ends up with the person on the hill.

Any ideas for help? I would really really appreciate it! Only now realized how much this PW2 actually means to me.

KV Fix a bricked ( looping with crashed screen ) Voyage

Hi,

I have a K3 for reading purposes and I was looking for a high resolution e-ink display for a custom project with a mirror and bought a faulty kindle voyage.

Supposedly it shouldn't even be turning on, but the thing is, once I connected it to a charger, the background light lit up and the amber led turned on. Every 5/10 seconds the light goes off and on again and it seems to be stuck here.

Without the charging cable, if I press the power button the led turns green for a second and then disappears and the same behaviour ( light on and off every x seconds ).

This is the link to the video in case you can't see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLem-m_QgMw

So now I'm thinking that there may be a solution for this voyage. I do have several spare USB TTL adapters and I'm going to mod one for the 1.8v.

I've seen several tutorials for the jailbreak, but none for the firmware flash from scratch ( for this specific model ). I've also used the search and the wiki links but they are empty. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Does this look like something fixable or should I just skip this step and go straight to disassembly to remove the screen?

Make Bookerly dark again

I wanted to make Bookerly appear darker, either more contrast or slightly bolder. To do this I installed the font hack but now I don't know what to override with what.

Is there another method to get this?

Which is best, FBKindle or FBreader by Dzha?

My Kindle Paperwhite 2 has been jailbroken using this guide, and two options stands out with regards to ebook software.

FBreader (by Dzha)
fbKindle (by andy wooden)

That's according to this thread.

But I wonder, which is best? I would like to be able to sync my reading status on FBreader across all platforms (I have FBreader on my cell and tablet as well).

K5 Another brick in the wall (Kindle Touch)

Hello everyone, first I'd like to thank you all for the resources compiled in this forum. I've spent the last few days lurking trying to get my Kindle touch up and running and reading about debricking and different methods around this forum.

The Kindle Touch was not jailbroken, but it was sideloaded with a lot of Calibre epubs. After normal use it gave me the dreaded "Your Kindle Needs Repair" screen and I let it sit on my bookshelf for several months since. Now I find myself in between jobs with a wish to dig back into reading on my Kindle. Unfortunately connecting to the serial interface is impossible with my equipment. I am currently working with Windows 10, a Windows 7 vm and Ubuntu.

Yesterday, after a couple hours researching on the forum and charging my kindle I navigated to K:/ (which was only accessible for around 20 seconds before it would disappear in windows explorer) and deposited a 0byte file "DO_FACTORY_RESET" (or was it restore? still, I definitely used the correct form) and to my amazement, the kindle gave me a different screen for the first time in months. That sweetness soon turned into sour when after several minutes of waiting I arrived back at the "Your Kindle Needs Repair" screen. Darn.

The kicker is that the Kindle is now stuck in what I believe is called "Fake USB Mode" where all it displays is a 0byte Disk image in explorer that never fully loads. Uninstalling in device manager proves fruitless (even with automatic driver installation turned off) as it asserts itself as a disk image) There is also a separate entry in device manager under "mobile devices" called "K:/" that appears along with the Kindle. Uninstalling both of these in hopes of loading a driver that can read from the Kindle again has been useless thus far.

After more reading I looked into Kubrick (Kubrick could not detect my kindle) After Kubrick I tried MFGtool in windows 10 (crashes at USB setup). Then I tried MFGtool in a Windows 7 virtual machine. At this point, with the proper filters it did see my kindle but it would disconnect before it could do finish doing anything useful. At most I saw it freeze on the Treeboy splash screen.

Ubuntu is having a tough time making anything out of the plugged in Kindle. lsusb was listing the Kindle for a few seconds each time I would restart the device. I used imx usb loader but it did not cause any changes on the kindle.

I am now having problems getting the kindle to properly recognize in a virtual machine. But in my normal Windows installation, the problem hasn't changed at all (empty disk, leading me to believe that it's just my inexperience with virtualbox causing me grief). But it should be noted that the device doesn't show up in ubuntu when I list devices either, now. I feel like i'm just making it worse at this point.

:help: I'm desperate to get this thing working. Is there something I've missed or vitally misconstrued? Am I looking at a irreparibly bricked device? Does anyone have a spare kindle collecting dust and a few stamps laying around?

Thank you in advance for the help!

Kindle PW2 connecting to WiFi hotspot

Hi to the Kindle Developers' Corner and to Mobileread!

Thank you very much to NiLuJe, knc1, Branch Delay, Geekmaster, eeeee, ktwombley, eschwartz, yifanlu, yossarian17, ixtab, eureka and the many others who have contributed, to allow us to have these jailbreaks and downgrades and tools on our Kindles!

I am wondering, how could I connect my Kindle Paperwhite 2 (PW2) to my Android LG G4's WiFi Hotspot.

Right now, it works _fine_ if my smartphone is connected to mobile data (LTE, 4G), and my PW2 connects to the smartphone's WiFi hotspot. However, if my smartphone is not connected to mobile data, then my Kindle will not be able to connect to it's WiFi. The smartphone's WiFi hotspot (with SSID G4) shows up in the list of available wifis on the Kindle. When I select that wifi, the Kindle tries to connect, and then announces that it is not capable of doing so.

My hypothesis is that the Kindle is making am HTTP GET request to a certain IP address (probably one owned by Amazon) to try and see if it can reach the internet. In that case, the solution would be to redirect that IP request to a certain small server on my smartphone. I can spin up PHP or Python servers on my smartphone, on Termux, so this would not be difficult.

Also, I am not logged into my Amazon account on my Kindle when this issue happens.

Also, on a somewhat separate issue, when my Kindle would successfully connect to the wifi hotspot (when my smartphone was connected to mobile data), it used to show up in the list of connected devices on my smartphone. Now, it does not show up there anymore (but I can still SSH into it!!)

I am on a flight with slow internet and do not have a mobile data connection and this is a great time to hack on that Kindle! :)

Thank you!

Wilornel

EDIT: properly thanked big contributors to the Kindle PW2 jailbreak and downgrade

How do you make sure your Kindle is running fast?

Hi Kindle Developers' Corner!

New owner of a jailbroken Kindle Paperwhite 2 here :)

I was wondering, how do you guys make sure that you have enough resources (memory available, CPU available, or even swap space available?) in order to keep your Kindle running smoothly?

The biggest issue I had with the Kindle recently was when I was trying to write in a notes file. I SSH into my Kindle, and from my Kindle SSH into my smartphone and from _that_ session attaching to a tmux session! I make sure to redirect the SSH session from the Kindle to my smartphone to the tty shown my kterm on my Kindle. I do this because my kterm horizontal binary is a little bit broken on my PW2, so its keyboard does not work.

When I do this, I have some moments (somewhat rare) where I have to wait a second or two for some keys to input. When I restarted my Kindle, this improved.

Thanks,

Wilornel

Force Goodreads activation for international users

Hello,

Has someone already attempted to force the 'goodreads for kindle' activation for people living outside of the Goodreads United States / Canada / Australia?

For such people, the application does not show up in the kindle toolbar, unless you have an amazon.com account (as opposite to, say, amazon.fr). And using such an account bars you from using your local kindle store...

Thanks for your advice!

PW2 firmware issue

Trying to get on firmware v5.4.4 from v5.4.3 on my PW2 using updates from here, but the kindle refuses the upgrade

However I can up/downgrade between v5.4.3 and v5.6.5 no problem

I deleted the index files and now it's reindexing everything

I saw that the index files were taking up around 170 MB, so I deleted it after I made a backup. To see whether it would reindex, I searched for a nonsense word and it showed that everything needed to be indexed. Well I made a backup so I'm fine I thought. But after I replaced the new index files on the system folder with the baclup, it still showed that the books were being indexed.

Why didn't it work?

K5 Identify Jailbreak version installed on KT?

Hello, I've just got a 2nd hand Kindle Touch :2thumbsup:

I noticed that the previous user had installed an old version of jailbreak with UI, collection manager and stuffs.
The problem is that the Kindle is not working properly (slow and even freeze sometimes). I guess it's because of some software conflicts and would like to reset it and reinstall newer jailbreak version.
I have contacted the previous user but he doesn't remember which jailbreak version he installed (it was ~4 years ago). In the "Device info" section it says:
Quote:

Firmware version: 5.1.2
JBPatch: 6/7 (2.4.1)
So is there anyway for me to uninstall JB and its related content (i.e factory reset) other than debricking? :thanks:

How to use the search bar ";xxx" commands to launch an app?

On my KT3 (G000KA, 5.8.0), I tried adding an entry to the file /usr/share/webkit-1.0/pillow/debug_cmds.json:
";kt" : "/mnt/us/extensions/kterm/bin/kterm.sh" (to launch kterm by entering ;kt into the search bar)
(also need to do a 'mntroot rw' first, followed by a 'mntroot ro' after editing the file)

Didn't work... :(
I suppose it couldn't be so easy!

Anybody know how to do it?

Problem with Kindle Paperwhite 3 Jailbreak. Please help!!!!!

Hi everybody i jailbreaked my kindle yesterday, just because i wanted to install KOreader. But after trying it out i decided to reset the device because i liked it as it were before jailbreaking. Afterwords i read that a reset does not remove the jailbreak, and i realized that my device won't update to any firmware at all (i download the firmware from amazon.com and transfer it to the kindle as usual) but the update button on the device remains grayish, as there weren't any update file/firmware transferred to it :/. Im now stuck with firmware 5.7.2 which is the bin. file i installed from the 'how to jailbreak' guide. I also installed the Hot fix file after i jailbreaked it. And i have tried the whole day to find out how to remove the jailbreak or at least be able to update it to the latest firmware 5.8.2.
My kindle is a Paperwhite 3 wifi from europe.
I would really appreciate if anyone could help me with this problem.

3m Library Cloud on Kindle Touch

Hi, sorry for starting a new thread but I feel that I've got a good reason.

I've been trying to get access to ebooks from my local library on my Kindle Touch. I'm happy to jailbreak it but I couldn't really find anything about what to do next. Can you think of any alternative os or an app that allows reading 3m cloud library ebooks on jailbroken KT?

The way you transfer ebooks from 3m CL to other readers (Nook or Kobo) means that the 3mCL windows app would have to see my KT as a different reader.

Any ideas?

Kindle PW3 with USB networking enabled cannot telnet to MacOS

Hi all,

I have a Kindle PW 3 with USB networking enabled. I'm able to ssh into the device from my Mac(10.11.6). By the way, I set my IP to 192.168.15.200 on my Mac. I have a server running on my mac on port 8080. I tried to ssh into the kindle and do "telnet 192.168.15.200 8080" and getting no response. Same thing for port 22. It seems the network cannot be routed to my Mac for some reason.

I also tried to setup the same on a ubuntu machine and I can have my Kindle telnet to the ports on my Ubuntu.

Any ideas why it doesn't work on MacOS?

Thanks!

Hi Guys,
My kindle PW2 is completely dead. Can't restart it, even with 24H recharge or connected to a PC. I always get the "tree" image on the screen and nothing more.
My question is, can I try to brick and force a restart or it is impossible if your PC won't recognize the Kindle?
Thanks

Help about using a Kindle DXG as PC display

$

Sorry if my questions are too obvious. I have used the search tool, but I don´t have find an answer.

I have brought an used Kindle DXG (I will receive it within 2 or 3 days). The software version is 2.5.8, serial number B009... I know nothing about linux, only Windows (forgive me...)

I want to use the DXG as PC monitor (or MS Word will kill my eyes), using the metod described here:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/25958...c_display.html
(I hope there is no problem about posting this link)

But I have lots of questions:

1. Can I jailbreak a Kindle DXG (B009...) running software version 2.5.8 using the archive "Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dxg_install.bin" from this forum? Or I have to update the firmware before?

2. Will I brick the Kindle DXG if it has been jailbreaked previously and I try to jailbreak it again?

3. Can I use "Update_usbnetwork_0.57.N_dxg_install.bin" from this forum instead "Kindle -usbnetwork-0.37.N.bin" mentioned in the article?

4. Any advice before I try to make this "project"?

Thank you!

KT2 Totally Bricked?

Hello there,

I'm Nick and I'm new to this kind of stuff, I first jailbroke my Kindle Touch 2 yesterday night and already I think I have bricked it. I have researched over the internet for my situation but I cannot find a fix.

I was looking around diags and went into a sub-menu and clicked something along the lines of "EXIT-DIAGS" this bought my kindle to the boy under the tree screen with text: "DIAGS EXIT Please use serial port". I researched this and found that holding down the power button gets you out of this, which it did.

This is where my problem starts.

Then I was looking around diags again and I accidentally clicked something like "EXIT-DIAGS FASTBOOT". It came up with "DIAGS EXIT Please use serial port"
This time the holding-down-power-button-for-40-seconds did not work. I connected my kindle to my PC and nothing, then while my Kindle was connected to my PC, I held down the power button and this is what happened:

The Power/Charging LED flashed 5 times then my computer detected the Kindle as an unknown device. The Kindle stays 'detected' for a few seconds then it disappears from device manager along with the windows disconnect sound. I tried this again and the LED blinked, stayed alive for a few seconds and then disappeared as if it was disconnected.

I tried KuBrick which did not work and I don't know what else to do. Probably all of you in here know more than me so what are my options?
And am I permanently bricked?

Really, any help appreciated

Nick
