K5 "Unlocked" K5 (WiFi+3G) won't connect to 3G

New to the forum, feeling sheepish but determined to make lemonade out of lemons:
My K5/KT was stolen, and I decided to replace it - so I bought one on eBay. Advertised as WiFi+3G, but "unlocked 3G" - that didn't bother me because I assumed that was like unlocked phones, and I'm used to those. BUT when it arrived...no 3G. (Otherwise, it works fine) Internal Device info says it has WiFi+3G, the SN begins B00F, firmware 5.3.7.3. Model no. is D01200. So it should have 3G, right?
I'm wondering whether the seller had "modified" it. I'm willing to try to put it back together - I used to root my cellphones til they got too smart (I'm great at following directions) - but I don't know where to begin here.
In USB mode, the file directory doesn't look dirty - nothing looks out of line but I don't really know what I'm looking for.

First question is how to tell whether this is a hardware or a software problem. It's possible that there's something less deep that I'm missing. If there's not a setting to tweak somewhere, the next question will be how to apply which fixes I see referred to in this forum...or whether it's hopeless.

I don't want to do anything fancy...no tethering, etc. I just want my 3G back because I like to be independent of WiFi (I used the web browser on my old one all over Europe) At least I didn't pay much - if I just have WiFi, so be it.
But can anyone help (and is this the right place?)
TIA

Is there anything like cydia for kindle?

I recently jailbroke my kindle and I mostly like it so far but I don't like having to get my computer whenever I want to install something. I was wondering if there was a store for the programs that not only puts it all in one place, but also lets me install them without my computer.

If there isn't, I will give a crack at making it because I don't think it would be that hard. All it needs to do is list the programs, download the packages and install them.

PW2 Questions about adding "Jim's Board" to my PW2

My Kindle PW2 is running firmware 5.8.9.2. I would like to jailbreak it. Apparently the only way I can do that at this time is to crack the PW2 open and tickle it via its internal serial port.

Thanks to dhdurgee pointing me in the direction of Serial Jailbreaking your fw >= 5.6.x Kindle for Dummies I am in the process of doing this.

I have already obtained Jim's board. I have already cracked the case open w/o damaging anything that I am aware of. Out of its case entirely, the Kindle still works. I am as amazed as you are! ;)

While reading the Serial Jailbreaking thread I saw a post from kaz572 about mounting the serial board permanently into the PW2 case. That seems like a reasonable thing to do. I have been ESD trained. I can solder, have tools, patience, and time. Oh, and a Dremel. Don't leave home without it! Before proceeding I have a couple of questions.

Q:1 Does leaving the serial board attached, obviously continuously powered, cause any significant change in the Kindle's battery life?

Q:2 Has anyone other than kaz572 done this? Care to share your experience and any tips you might have? For example, what's the best place to mount the board?

Thanks :thanks: in advance.

Can I mount a USB drive on a Kindle?

I just got a fairly good condition Kindle 4 (no-touch) from a local Goodwill couple of days ago.. I was sorta surprised they had so many e-readers. I loaded some library rented e-books and played around. I eventually found the jailbreak and preformed it on my device.

I hope this is the right form for this question. Can I mount a USB drive on the Kindle in a similar fashion to using a OTG cable?

Monitoring incoming content on Kindle

$

Hi, so I've been a happy LibrarianSync user as I use it to sync my books folder with kindle through custom collection rebuild from folders.
Now I'm after a new endeavour, namely in automatic assignment of articles which come by Amazon mail (I often mail articles from the my laptop browser directly to my Kindle) to a specific folder.

I think I have a rough idea how to do it but I couldn't notice any new process spawning with incoming content by using 'ps -aux' command...
So my question would be - has someone identified the process which handles the content delivery on kindle? What should I monitor? Perhaps someone already wrote a content delivery monitor?

Thanks!

Kindle paperwhite third generation stuck on demo mode configure device screen.

Hi, I entered the ;demo command on my kindle paperwhite to enable demo mode because I wanted to experiment around with something. I was going through the setup screens for demo mode when my kindle froze. I restarted it by holding the power button and now a screen shows saying This demonstration device is either missing content or is disconnected from the network. It has an option to configure this device. When I tap configure this device nothing happens. I don't know what to do now. My kindle is stuck on that screen and I can't do anything. When I restart it it just goes to the same screen again.

Hi, I've found a minor, but annoying issue that after I rebuild collections from folders all my pdf reading settings get lost. For example I need to re-set triming and the move by hand to the last page.
Is there something that can be done with it? Perhaps a fix to LibrarianSync?

Thanks!

Kindle 3 WiFi+3G Eu unable to jailbreak

I am completely aware there have been posts about this before on this forum but I believe they are outdated

I want to jailbreak my kindle 3. I have confirmed what model it is and I am using version 3.4.2. I followed the guide for the jailbreak and screensaver hack on this forum but I received an error, unsure what this meant I tried the screensaver hack and got the same error.

I am unsure what to do at this point and I'd rather someone else who knows their way around jailbreaking kindles to give some insight into this problem.

Thanks

KT2 Need help getting KT2 back to life

Ok, first post here, so.. Hi everyone

I have some trouble with my KT2. A few weeks back i jailbroke it succesfully. After putting something on (don't ask me what it was exactly, it was weeks back. Some Book.) and rebooting the device i'm stuck in a bootloop/update loop.

Currently i get a "Your Kindle needs to be repaired" screen. After a Hard reboot it tries to update, Fails on the way and goes back to that screen. While it's booting i have access to the storage over USB on Windows. Sadly it doesn't stay so long enough to put the full 190MB Firmware on it. As soon as the "Repair needed" Screen pops up, access to storage is gone.

Since most threads i found are a bit all over the place, i'm not sure where to start. I tried running mfgtool, but i crashes under Windows 10. From what i've read, i could get to fastboot and get it to work with a special cable. But since, my reader is still reacting to input i'd rather avoid buying special stuff and get it back up and running some other way.

Any help or input on how to resolve my Problem would be greatly appreciated. If you need any further information, i'll do my very best to brovide that.

PW3 Installing a regular linux distro?

Despite being decently knowledgeable in the field of linux/Unix I will admit that I don't know much about my Paperwhite 3 kindle. I've "Jailbroken" it and installed Alpine Linux in a Chroot that works quite well, but I've found that since it's not my primary reading device, I don't often use it for much except as a portable linux terminal.

This makes me figure that I could remove the Amazon software components from the device, except the kernel (bootloader is locked right?) and drivers; and then just replace the root fs with the Alpine rootfs that I'm already using in a chroot, and then set the device to load X11>Kterm on boot.

Point being, I'm fairly certain this is possible, but I thought it would be a good idea to run this past people who have more experience with the device than I do in case I'm missing something obvious.

Thank you in advance.

Hello guys,

I tried to do it alone reading post after post but I'm just too noob to do a proper jailbreak :D

Here the fact: I got a Kindle Touch serial number B011 with the 5.3.7.2 firmware and I would like to jailbreak it. The kindle is was resetted to factory default but my first try always ended in a update error 3...

Could somebody point me to the right tutorial for the jailbreaking of this specific model?

Thank you in advance!

"B003" Kindle 2 -- Questions about 3G

I just got a really good condition Kindle 2 with the serial prefix of "B003". After looking at the Kindle 2 iFixit teardown, it looks like there is a full mini pci-e card slot inside. I have two questions about this.

Can the 3G modem be moved to another device like a laptop and still give 3G usage?

Can the 3G modem be swapped out for a Wifi one? Would be nice to use this e-ink display for displaying after the possibility of Amazon turning off 3G.

Chess Engines binaries for KT

Hello,

I just jailbreaked my KT and installed the very nice application pbchess that turned my KT in a nice chess machine.

The program pbchess is delivered with a few engines but I would like to know if there are other port to KT (newer engine versions or completely new engines).
For now I found the octochess engine that offer pre-compiled binaries that works very nice.

Do you know other pages like that?
I'm not able to cross compile source codes, i need UCI (Universal Chess Interface) pre-compiled binaries like the one in the octochess page.

PW1 not jailbroken following firmware update

Hello from this noob :)

I wonder if someone could help me with a little issue. I wanted custom screensavers on my PW1 running firmware 5.6.1.1 so looked here and followed the advice to successfully downgrade to 5.3.3. I was then able to jailbreak and installed the screensaver package. All good. However I then foolishly updated back to 5.6.1.1 and the custom screensavers no longer worked.

The situation now is that if I drop any .bin files into my Kindle root, they seem to be automatically deleted as soon as I eject it. I tried installing the hotfix as per this, but still no joy - screensaver customisation gone, all .bin are still deleted when I eject my PW1. Any thoughts on what to try next please?

Native TightVNC Viewer porting

I ported the Linux version of TightVNC viewer.

I tested only on my PW3, so feedbacks are welcome.

If you want to use it, be sure you have an active ssh connection in order to kill the vncviewer process when you've done, otherwise you can brick your device!

Instructions:
  1. Extract the archive on your kindle
  2. Open a ssh connection (via cable or wifi)
  3. Open KTerm
  4. [from KTerm] cd to the directory where you extracted the archive
  5. [from KTerm] execute:
    Code:

    ./vncviewer -viewonly -nojpeg  <ip_of_your_server>::<port_of_your_server> &

if you need a password for the server, use the included vncpasswd tool to create a password file and in the step 5. use this command instead:
Code:

./vncviewer -viewonly -nojpeg -passwd <your_password_file> <ip_of_your_server>::<port_of_your_server> &
to stop the viewer, (from your ssh session), grab the id of its process:
Code:

ps aux | grep vncviewer
and kill it:
Code:

kill <PID_of_vncviewer>
If you get distorted images, try to change the resolution of your server (i noticed this with the Windows version of TightVNC server on 1366x768 pixels, if i changed to 1360x768 the images are ok)

Use at your own risk!
