I am assisting a friend with a Kindle Touch. When I first received it, it was in diags mode. I rebooted it from the diags menu. Since that time, when this kindle is turned on, all it displays is:
--------------------------------------
Software Update
!
The Update was not successful.

UPDATE ERROR:3
--------------------------------------
To my knowledge, no modifications (read: jailbreaks, etc.) have been made to this device. I have charged this device overnight multiple times.
I can follow this guide through "BOOT IN FASTBOOT MODE" and "FLASH NEW DIAGS WITH SSH AND KERNEL". However, I cannot boot into diags mode to continue with "PLACE NEW MAIN PARTITION AND COPY IT". (Direct link to guide)
I used the following four files while following the above-referenced guide:
*NOTE*: I have no idea what version software/firmware was originally installed on this Kindle.
From http://pastebin.com/Wdw4L7yT:
K5 (touch) main images:
kernel-5.0.0: http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/...kernel_main.gz
mmcblk0p1-5.0.0: http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/...p1-main.img.gz
K5(Touch) diags images with SSH (5.0.0 diags kernel used with 5.0.0 through 5.0.3 mmcblk0p2):
diags_kernel-5.0.0: http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/...ernel_diags.gz
mmcblk0p2_ssh-5.0.1: http://ixtab.tk/kindle-touch-images/...ags+ssh.img.gz
I can use the Kubrick v3.6 LiveCD up to the point where the Kindle is supposed to reboot into diags mode. Instead, it reboots to the same screen referenced above telling me "the update was not successful".
From Windows XP, MfgTool can put the Kindle into fastboot mode, and I can access the Kindle with the command prompt and fastboot.exe.
When selecting diags mode, it just reboots and returns to the above screen telling me "the update was not successful".
When selecting "main", the Kindle reboots, shows a message: "Software Update. Your Kindle software is updating. This can take a few minutes. DO NOT turn your kindle off during the update process. Your Kindle will automatically restart as soon as the update process is complete.", and then reboots to the above screen telling me "the update was not successful".
With all that said and done, I'm stuck. Any ideas? Any and all constructive suggestions are welcome. Thank you very much for your time.
